"I'll be back soon, I promise!" she called behind her, not hearing an answer. She didn't really expect an answer, though a farewell might have been nice. Auri sighed, shaking her head, and padded off, towards the waterhole she had discovered the day before. But Moyo had come looking for her, so she had been forced to head back home before her mother became too suspicious.

Truly, she loved her mother, but the lioness didn't really spend time with her only daughter. Sure, they talked and joked around like every other day, but their relationship wasn't as quite close as it was, say, Kiwi's relationship with Kikura. She'd love to have the same thing with her mother, but Moyo didn't really feel like talking most of the time. It was a bit frustrating, and was one of the reasons why she kept exploring. It got her mind out of the den, it gave her something to do, and lately, she had been meeting many interesting lions.

The waterhole she had found the day before was not very big, but large enough for a good handful of adult lions--three, say--to drink and paddle in comfortably. She stopped a foot away, inspecting it. There were a few boulders scattered around it, which gave room for privacy, and the water looked clean enough. Her paw dipped into one side, and quickly drew it out. The water was a bit cold, to her surprise. Oh well.

Another ghostly shadow was making it's way back into the Pridelands, towards the watering hole. He'd just returned from a visit to the Unity Walker's, visiting the mother of his future child. It was coming along well, her pregnancy. Soon his first son or daughter would be coming into the world. What would they be like, he wondered.

Ayato was so occupied with his thoughts that he almost didn't see the female gathered by the watering hole already.

Almost.

"Morning. I take it the water's not exactly swimming temperature?"

Ayato paused abruptly, mid sentence, letting out a large yawn, then shook it off.

"Sorry, mind if I rest here a bit?"

She might want to be alone after all.

She hadn't even heard him, he had been so quiet in his approach. But her eyes shot up to inspect him, as her tail flicked idly to one side, and then the other.

"Good morning," she returned after a second. He had surprised her; she deserved a moment to collect her thoughts. "It is a bit chilly, but the sun should warm it up some more soon enough.

"No, it's a public hole," she replied after his inquiry. "I'm not going to run you off," she joked weakly. True, she might have found it, but that didn't make it hers. And she was nice, and loved to share. Sharing was good.

To her kind reply Ayato gave a sleepy smile, then settled to lie down, stretching out some with a satisfied groan, eyes shut briefly.

"Nothing like a good stretch after a long night..."

A content sigh, and the purple eyed male was looking up at her again, this time with a gentle curiosity. He stared at the marking on her shoulder thoughtfully, trying to place why it and that shade of gold looked so familiar.

His head tilted a bit to one side, then the other as he studied it from different angles.

And her eyes...

A long night? Had he traveled, then?

"Did you travel far, then, to be so tired now?" she asked politely, making small talk. Perhaps he had been near the Unity Walkers, and perhaps he knew of the grandparents and aunts and uncles she had never met, yet heard so much about. If luck had it, then he did. If not, she would just have to travel there herself when she had the chance.

As he calmly gave her a look-over, so did she to him.

His coloring was unusual, but not unheard of. The white and gray were shocking next to the brown and golds of the terrain around them, and the sparse green here and there. But his eyes were so striking, such a purple color that she rarely saw in anything. Most of the time a beautiful pink or purple flower would pop up in the green areas, but then it would crinkle and fall, a beauty too short-lived to bring much happiness.

"Yes, well, technically no. I just didn't really stop to rest as much as I should have I think." He confessed just a little sheepishly, "I was visiting a pride, called the Unity Walkers. They're just a few days travel from here."

Her ears perked up instantly as she unconsciously straightened. The Unity Walkers?! There was no way! She just wished that he had been, and he just confirmed it.

It was a small world, after all.

"The Unity Walkers?" she repeated, trying not to sound too earnest. "Do you happen to know of a...a Kifijo or Tanashita, there?"

A few days' travel from here? Why didn't her Mother ever tell her that? Moyo had gestured to the direction a few times, but had never elaborated for reasons unknown to her only daughter. But if they were truly that close, what stopped Auri from taking a little trip down to visit her family?

"Mm, I do, as a matter of fact. I don't know them very well, but I've spoken to Kifijo once or twice."

That was when it hit him, why she looked so familiar!

"You're related to them aren't you!"

Though meant to be a question, it certainly came out more of an "AHA!" moment than anything. He seemed proud of his realization, grinning from ear to ear.

"We're related then... er.... in a really kind of roundabout way."

Auri blinked and her grin widened incredibly.
"Really! Kifijo is my grandfather! I can't believe you know him!"

She had never visited her Unity Walkers family, but had heard many good things from both her mother and her father.

"Wait, so does that mean...we're related, too?"

That would be so neat if they were! She would be able to find a new relative, randomly, after talking with a new lion. This could be a good day after all.

Ayato laughed shortly, a sound that filled his chest and had him chuckling shortly afterwards as well.

"Yeah, seriously! Tanashita's brother is the father of my half siblings! ..... I really have NO clue what that makes us, but we are technically related even if not by blood directly. It works out that way somehow, right?"

"We are technically blood related, though. The blood is thinned, though, by a lot," she chuckled. "But I guess that makes us..." she counted in her mind.

"Let's see.

"Tana is my grandmother, so her brother would be my granduncle, right? Which makes his children my grandcousins.

"So you're my cousin!" She laughed at the strange conclusion, although it was quite interesting to come about.

"Nice little family tree isn't it? The bad thing is that's probably as simple as it gets. You don't even want to HEAR about my uncle's side of the family." He winked, rubbing at his nose a bit with a paw. "Well, you know, it's always nice to meet more family." Ayato smiled.

She laughed, nodding. "Yeah. History is kind of boring to me, but if you pair that with extensive family and unknown relatives, it just goes off the deep end."

She frowned for a moment, glancing at the sun. It was getting late.

"Speaking of family, though, I need to head back to mine before they start to worry. It was nice meeting you, Ayato," she added, giving him a smile and preparing herself to turn and make the quick jog back home.

The pale lion watched as she got up again and readied herself to leave, thinking the timing was actually pretty well. He needed to get back home so that he could rest, and he still had to get all the way back to Pride Rock to do that! At least now he felt good and refreshed after their conversation.

"It was nice meeting you too, Auri." He smiled, getting to his own paws slowly. "I'll see you around!" He called out after her before turning to head along on his way as well.

Life certainly was full of surprises.
