Is swearing a sin. A friend of mine (he's a Christian) said that it isn't. Is that correct? Why is/isn't it considered a sin?

Yes, swearing as in saying bad words is a sin. James 3:1-9 talks about taming your tongue. It says that is evil and hard almost pointless for a mna to tame it. We, however, should only praise God and saying bad things is not praising God. Ephesians 4:29 says, "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen." Now is saying a bad word going to encourerage someone to do good...no. I hope this helps. God bless.

Yes, that helps. But I now think that God may be a little too strict saying that we have to praise him with everything we do neutral .

But praising Him is so easy! Taking your girlfriend out on a date can be praising God, in a way. Anything we do that's not a sin is, in a manner of speaking, praise to God. It's enjoying the world He's made and the blessings He's given you. That's my favorite type of praise. xd

That's easy. I guess i thought that when i read that you have to constantly praise God that it meant the physical praying and doing things for God.

I suppose it makes sense to say that enjoying his world would be praise. I mean, why would he put us here and take the time and effort to make the planet to beautiful if he didn't mean for us to enjoy it? It is still important to be grateful.

yes it is a sin

Matthew 5:33-37

Again you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord, But I tell you Do not swear at all either by heaven for it is Gods throne or by earth for it is it's footstool: or by Jerusalem for it is the city of the great king. And do not swear by your head for you cannot make one hair white or black. Simply let your Yes be Yes and your No be No. anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

This passage is not talking about swaering as saying bad words but as a promise to some one to do something.

I thought there was something wrong about that piece of scripture.

The question here is why would you want to swear? Swearing usually shows anger at someone or something. Getting angry very easily is not a sign of a Christian. We must be patient. The Lord also wants us to control our tongues because it can be used in many wrong ways. Also swearing gives off a bad image to others, if people saw you cursing I believe they would think you were crude and not into God. Don't do things that would cause others to think of you as against God or cause others to sin. If you swear at someone or something that causes other bad reactions.

I often use it when I'm either mad, or around my non-Christian friends. It is hard to stop, but being around other Christians reminds me to keep silent.

EDIT: Even when I do, I'm not very agressive with it. I would never actually swear at someone.
