What do you think is the definition of an anime fan ? I always thought I was. But apparantly, I'm not. I'm not a fan, according to some people, because I don't watch my anime in Japanese with subtitles. Just because I like anime dubbed doesn't mean I'm a fan. I make AMVs as a hobby. Subbed footage is a major no-no in that field. That's one half of the reaons I prefer a dub to a sub. The other half is that I prefer to watch what I'm viewing, not read it. I can read manga if I wanted to read something. To some, I'm not an anime fan because I prefer the older anime to the new stuff. That's just me, I prefer the old classics like Akira, Bubblegum Crisis, and Vampire Hunter D to the more Millenium anime of today. This is just by personal preference, but yet I was labeled as a non true anime fan.

Note: Don't take offense to what I said, what I like and my preference in anime is my opinion. Nothing more.

So what you think makes a fan of anime ?

First off: Hey! I saw you at GD!

Second: I dont think that there's any guidelines to what makes you an anime fan. If you dont like subs, then thats your choice. No one has the right to tell you you're not an anime fan, because if you like it, that's basically what has made you a fan. Not just you, anyone. Nobody can tell them what they are and what they're not.

If you're a fan of anime then you like anime, it's as simple as that. The details on whether or not you like subs/dubs, watch original material, or any of the other things people base fandom on are trivial things that only determine your preferences. These preferences have no relevance on whether or not you're a fan.

I was intrigued by your sig, so I sent a join request. I felt rather offened that day when that person told me my lack of fandom made her sad. What lack in fandom? I attend conventions, make AMVs, collect stuff, been watching the stuff since I was a toddler. I think that makes me enough of a fan as it is.

I fail at being a fan. I don't even watch that much anime or read that much manga.

The same with Phoe and Spider. I don't read alot of Manga or Anime, but I'm interested. I'm not a fan of the entire genre/"style" itself, just what catches my eye. For example, I've been wanting to check out Infinite Ryvius and Stratos 4 only because it reminds me of Ender's Game. (Except Stratos because it has boobies and humor) I'm not held true by the common definition of an anime fan. Why should I? If being an anime fan means wasting $300+ on Anime DVDs (Instead of a decent guitar domokun ), buying all the merchandise and the dolls, have two bookshelfs to the brim with manga, and waste money on costumes and expos then I wouldn't have time for anything else. It'd all be a waste of my money, time, and energy. If this is what it takes and what it is to be an anime fan, I don't want to be part of it.

Besides, it's much easier to do with music. whee

You know what makes you a fan of anime?

LIKING IT.

There are no magical prerequisites. Period. If you think you're a fan, you're a fan. You don't need to own a shitload of stuff, you don't need to memorize names, or prefer subs over dubs. You just need to enjoy the stupid s**t, be whatever it is (anime or not) and think you're a fan, and PRESTO. You are.

Don't let dumbasses dictate whether or not you like something because they're obsessed.

It works both ways. I've been called an "OmG 31371$7" because I prefer subtitles.

The fact is, I watch English-language movies with subtitles too. I sometimes have a hard time interpreting spoken language.
