Her departure ever in mind, Ama wanted to make sure she got a good bit of time with each of her darlings before she let them go to the swamps without her. It was because of this that Amadet woke so early that morning, and when she carefully disentangled herself from her family and stretched out the fatigue, she leaned over and nudged at Pepo gently to wake him up.
"Pepo," she murmured, nudging him again, "Wake up, dear."

The only son slept peacefully beside one of his sisters, his face stil burried in her side because he was using her to block out the light of the dieing sun the night before. He purred in his sleep and let out a long yawn as he returned to consciousnes via his mother's prodding. His yawn was soon followed by a sound of slight cublike disgust as he moved his face away trying to get her blue fur out of his mouth.
"Mommy?" He mumbled feeling silly because it was obviously her, "Morning already?" He tuned with sleep's sluggishness and peered up at her with her own orange orbs.

Amadet watched as Pepo slowly woke up, beaming proudly at the small boy- and holding back a laugh when he yawned and coughed away from his sister. It was very likely that during the night, he had obtained a nice mouthful of the pretty blue fur. In response to his questions, she nodded.
"Come with me, Pepo," she whispered, and stepped away from the muddle of sleeping lions, "I want to talk to you."

Pepo did not need asking twice, he was determined to be the best little boy on earth, brave, obedient, and tough. He jumped to his feet a little too quickly and had to steady himself from falling, he never once question if he had done anything wrong, he knew for a fact he had not. He stretched as many felines do, first in his front paws each muscle taunt beneath his small form, and then the back. He was slightly larger than his sisters, probably larger than most small male cubs.
"Ready when you are," he lowered his voice so he would not wake the others.
He moved away from his sisters, shivering slightly because the many bodies meant more warmth than being alone. He was excited and slightly curious about what ever Mommy Amadet had to say to him.

Ama watched Pepo as he stumbled to his feet and stretched out, still smiling and not at all tired now that she was up. Once her son was free of the muddle of his sisters, she nodded to him and lead the way off towards the sunrise. She wasn't sure where she was going, but that wasn't so important- they just had to be out of earshot of the others, so they wouldn't disturb any of them while they slept. Perhaps a walk wasn't a bad idea in itself, though.
"Did you have a good sleep, Pepo?" she asked, glancing back at the small purple boy, "Good dreams, I hope."

Obediently he followed his mother and only paused for a second to consider her questions. "Mama, those are silly questions, the only kind of dreams are good ones!" he replied in a somewhat smug tone. He made what one cold only assume was a child's mental note about the way the ground crunched in the morning's silence, he glanced down at his black paws and nodded taking it to memory. The start of a beautiful friendship between the little purple boy and his love for making noise.
"Where are we heading?" he inquired his orange eyes pulling up from his feet to meet hers.

"Oh, of course," she beamed down at Pepo, glad he only had good dreams at night. It was not something most were blessed with, though she had noticed her bunch seemed to be very good sleepers. Amadet smiled at him, and then continued leading their way along. She didn't know where they would go, or what exactly she might talk about.. but it would be nice, rare time alone.
"We're just going for a walk," she answered him brightly, "There's so many of us, we don't get much alone time."

"No, we don't," he concluded thinking that they were just the right number, not too many lions, although he never knew any other way so the idea seemed rather silly. He followed along trying to pay attention to both the crunch beneath his feet and the his mother's every word.
"Boys are just as good as girls, aren't they?" He asked and startled himself that he had said it outloud.

Ama smiled down at Pepo when he agreed, knowing that it was important to try to give them each some special attention so they'd know her and could be happier together without getting jealous of each other. With Pepo, she felt it was especially important- hence their early morning walk.
She, too, was startled by his question.
"Of course they are, dear," she said, stopping where they were now- a safe distance from the family for conversation now, "Whatever gave you the idea that they aren't?"

"It's just everyone is a girl and I'm a boy, I wanted to know if that was okay," he wanted to please her so much, " Daddy is a boy, but, well that makes two boys and many girls." He thought about the exact number of females and nodded outwardly agreeing with his mind, there were many girls, six to be exact.
"I mean.." he was not sure exactly what all he meant, he knew he loved his family very much but he was already feeling something like the odd lion out because of his gender, he did not want to play what he considered girly games, butterflies were just bugs to him, he wanted to play a little rougher than them.

Amadet sat down and pulled Pepo close to her in a lion-like hug. She had been a bit worried something like this might come up, sometimes cubs were silly like that- he shouldn't feel isolated just because he was a boy.
"Of course that's ok!" she said, ruffling his mane a bit, "The girls don't bother you about it, do they?" Ama doubted it, they were all so sweet.. but it was possible, even if they only meant it as a joke.

Pepo in years to come was possibly going to look back at this moment and try his best to remember Amadet's every detail, but for now he was a small boy who needed to show face when it came to being hugged by his mother, he squirmed playfully trying to make his way out of her paws.
"Aawww, mama! What if someone sees?" he teased but really did feel wonderful in his mother's grasp, " No one bothers me, I just though maybe I was different but in a bad way, it just makes me different, right?" He looked up at her with bright orange glittering eyes.
"There will be boys to play with someday, right? Play wrestling games?"

"Don't want anyone to see that your mama loves you?" she teased, giving him a nudge so he could sit in front of her instead of on her paws where she had pulled him. Ama was glad to hear that no one was bothering Pepo because he was a boy, and it was rather sad for him to ask about their being boys to play with.
"I'll tell you a secret, ok?" Ama said, deciding there was no reason not to tell Pepo their plans.. as long as she left out the part where she left. She leaned in, smiling at him, "Daddy is part of a pride, and we're going to head that way soon- I'll bet there will be boys there for you to play with."
She winked at him, and sat up again.
"In the mean time, I think your sisters could take you on right now," she beamed, "But you'll get bigger and stronger than them soon enough."

He beamed and sat down infront of her smiling, of course his mommy loved him, "No, no of course not!" He wrinkled his nose at the idea of others seeing his mommy hugs him, not loves him.
"A secret, wow! We're going somewhere..where there will be boys!" He jumped up almost knocking his mother square on the jaw looking more like a yapping puppy than a lion cub and let out a tiny triumphant grunt, "Boy friends, that would be so great, when do we leave?"
"I'm bigger, but all together they could take me," he nodded and settled back down.

Continuing to play along like their moving to the swamps was some big secret, she gasped at his loud reaction and shushed him, "Shh! It's a secret, we can't let the girls find out yet, Pepo. Then it wouldn't be a secret anymore."
She smiled, "You can have fun with them until we get there, though I'd hope you're always friends with each other."
