Sors
I want to create a filled out novel about the love triangles here, and the complications of Alexander's and Elise's love life. This is just the short story I started with. Let me know what you think or if you've got ideas!
We’re All Missing Something And I Don’t Got It.
“This is Elise.” A man in a white suit introduced.
“Yes, I think we’ve met before.” She moved a hand through her golden curls and smiled back at him.
“You want to go out to the bar tonight?” He asked looking up at her from where he slouched on the sofa.
“Yeah, I would actually.” She replied setting her purse down on the little bamboo mat usually used for shoes. “Later though.” She moved over to where he sat lazily on the black leather.
“How was work?” He asked.
“Terrible.”
“I’m sorry, what happened?”
“I had to fire Ellen.”
“Didn’t she just start?”
She laughed and looked down at him from where she sat on the edge of the sofa. “She did, and I doubt she’ll be able to find another job… Easily. I just, I hate to fire women who have children, I hate being a hard a** all the time.”
“I understand.” He sat up and put a gentle arm about her shoulders. “Don’t worry, we’ll go out to the bar tonight and pick up a hottie.” She smiled back at him, and they both relaxed back into the depth of the sofa.
They watched the T.V. with laxed interest until the main door opened again and up the stairs came a man in his mid-twenties with a rough beard and a six-pack of beer. “Came over for the game after all!” He said with a large grin on his face. “Hey Elise!”
“Hi Jonny.” She said smiling back with those amber eyes that he though were so attractive.
“So, who are we playing tonight?” He asked staring up at the commercials going by on the screen.
“Hurricanes.”
“Ouch. Didn’t we loose to them last time.”
“Of course.”
He moved out of the room and into kitchen where he took out three beers and popped the rest into the refrigerator. Coming back in the game started and he sat the beers down onto the large glass table centered between the two black sofas. Elise grabbed her and then handed the other to the man she was curled against. He was large compared to her, making her look more like a little kid. He had soft looking blonde hair and an over grown five o’clock shadow that was far more red then his hair. His nose was a little crooked and his chin was very square. His eyes, though they were a beautiful blue on close inspection, were most likely his worst feature considering how squinted they always seemed to be.
Jonny could see why Elise liked the man though, why so many women liked him, he was purely charismatic in a way that no one could explain. Even just sitting there looking nonchalant and vacant he’d be the guy who’d get your eye and hold it a little longer then could ever be considered polite.
Jonny looked back to the T.V. and watched the hockey players skate across the screen with furry.
Elise looked out the corner of her eyes at the chest of the man who she snuggled so endearingly up to, and hoped he would change his mind about going out to the bar tonight.
He just sat, looking vacant and nonchalant, and watched his hockey game.
“Been a long time Alexander.” She said with a smile, the man in the white suit waving at someone across the crowded room. He gave her a smile and walked off.
“It has Elise.”
“What have you been doing all these years?”
Alexander looked over at the woman with the bright red hair beside him on the lift. She was all geared up with a cheep snowboard and a too large and too masculine jacket. He passed the bowl to her and she slipped off her gloves and took it with her white hands. A puff later she passed it on to the third passenger of the lift, Jonny, who took it and tucked the cashed bowl into a plastic bag in the interior of his brown jacket.
The three sat in silence till the end of the lift approached and Jonny spoke up.
“To the right?”
“Sure.” Alexander replied.
The three took off and managed to slide over to the right where each of them clipped their boards back on.
The chair behind them dumped its passengers off.
Both Alexander and Jonny watched in surprised silence as Elise skied by them unnoticing and accompanied by another tall handsome skier.
The redhead noticed their attention as she rose to her feet. “Who’re they?”
“An old friend.” Alexander said pushing off and sliding down the hill to follow the two skiers. Jonny did the same. The redhead looked stubbornly after them for a moment, and then followed down the slope.
The pair of skiers easily outstripped the snowboarders on the steep and powdered hill.
Alexander didn’t say much for the rest of the day, his mind somewhere else entirely.
“Who was that?” The redhead asked again as she followed Jonny into the lodge for lunch.
“Elise, and some guy.”
“Who’s Elise?”
“A friend of mine and Alexander’s. She moved to go to school in Boulder last year.”
“Oh.”
“Just hanging out like usual.”
“Of course.” The man in the white suit came back over.
“Honey, Ginger Dentmont is over here, you said you wanted to speak with her.”
“Yeah I did. See you later Alexander.” She said politely.
He watched her leave, his eyes looking keenly at the golden ring on her finger.
Elise pushed Alexander up against the wall. Her golden curls dripping down her naked body. Alexander looked down at her impassively as he always did.
“Marry me.” She said, she smiled, she hoped.
“Marry you, I though you didn’t want to get married.”
“I do, to you, so marry me.” He didn’t say anything, and started to look away. “Come on, it’ll be great. We’ll have cute girlfriends, you can move with me to Denver and we’ll have a townhouse. I can finish up school and start making the big bucks. You can go back to school too. And some day we’ll have cute little hockey playing babies.”
He looked away.
She waited for anything any answer at all. It didn’t come. So she grabbed her clothes off the bed, and slammed the door shut as she left.
It was only after he’d slept with another woman and lay there looking at the little white bubbles on the ceiling that he realized he could have said yes. He felt his heart lock up in his chest, and his body grow cold.
The nameless woman beside him rolled over and smiled. Her bright red hair looked like blood on the white sheets. “You’re a keeper baby.” She said with a sultry voice.
He turned and looked at her.
And tried to forget all about the little girl who’d loved him.
