Tweaking the prefs.ini configuration file is a very useful way of getting Eve to fully utilize your computer. If you haven't tweaked your prefs.ini yet, I strongly recommend you do so. It will improve the performance and overall feel drastically.

The prefs.ini file can be found by putting this into your URL bar: C:/Documents and Settings/INSERT YOUR COMPUTER USER NAME HERE/Local Settings/Application Data/CCP/EVE/settings

The ones that I recommend putting in are:

networkAdvanced which is already in it only needs to be changed from 0 to 1, this will allow EVE to utilize your connection better so you lag less and I even noticed a faster login speed.

advancedDevice=1 This will allow much higher resolutions as well as Anti-Aliasing and control over V-sync.

Things seemed to look better in general from what I saw by adding it.

buffersize= Set this to half of your physical RAM, this will REALLY improve performance if set correctly.

Here is where you can find more, including the ones I mentioned but these ones really aren't as important: http://myeve.eve-online.com/ingameboard.asp?a=topic&threadID=108524

Sweet thanks, hadn't seen that before. I notices an improvement immediately.

Glad it worked for you. Was it easy enough to understand overall?

yep. but with the buffersize I set it to 1/4 of my ram, since I run 2 eves at once sometimes. You think that's correct to do?

Anything's better than what it is by default, which is 80. As far as it working, you'll have to try it out and see.

Honestly I put it on 1/4 of my RAM as well because I don't know if my computer can fit all of its background tasks into the other gig, it used to have trouble doing that before I upgraded my hard drive so I think now that I was being overly paranoid.

When I get subscribed, i'm going to try it on 1024 though, which is half of mine. 2GB ftw.

Interesting, very useful information.

Another thing I've wondered was the existence of addons. I know there are tons of 3rd party programs, but with the level of tech knowledge of a lot of eve players, I'm surprised they haven't started an add-ons program yet.

Maybe you just haven't found anyone that makes them yet. There's only 200K players that play this game, the reason I say 'only' is that other games have 50x that number easily.

is this viable for the trinity release as well?

I'm not sure, I haven't looked at my prefs.ini since I patched to Trinity. I assume they've changed a little bit or possibly even reset some stuff. There is an advanced graphics checkbox in the graphics options now that enables more stuff for the basic set of graphics, i'm not sure that negates advancedDevice or what. Maybe looking around the official Eve forums will yield the answers you seek.
