Fall was here yet again. The crispness of the air told Faolen that soon all the leaves would be bared of their green lushness and the bite of winter would wrap around the land. Just this morning he had woken up breathing puff after puff of cool air. The sight amused him, but the fur that came with winter did not. The mostly black coat had begun to grow out much longer than usual, gaining softness and heat that he didn’t need yet. Right now he was knees deep in a pond just a bit off from the land he’d decided to call his “home.”

Perfect location really. A pond nearby, a place for refuge in the bitterest colds, and then the forest for scenery. So much thought had gone into where to live, yet Faolen couldn’t help but think that none of it mattered right now. After all, he had none to share this home with…

He needed to have a ‘home warming’ party or something… but there were no friends to invite.

Mindlessly gazing at his reflection soft words drawled out in the light burr, a gift of his father, “You’r in a fine predicament lad. All done up an’ nowhere ter go.” … Well, kinda.

The mare drifted through the underbrush, pleased by the woods surrounding her. The leaves had fast begun to change, their colors turning away from the gentle green and transforming in to a coat of gold, crimson and brown. Already the forest floor was beginning to be covered by the dead leaves of summer, crackling underneath her hooves as if serenading the winter soon to come.

Despite the cool touch to the breeze, the sunshine fought to let the last breaths of summer warm the hearts of those within its rays. Overall the autumn day was close to perfect, and so Eponine found herself enjoying such a scene. She wandered carelessly, not at all concerned where her feet took her this day - with her heads in the clouds, daydreaming away the afternoon with some fantastical story, the ice-touched female stepped out of the woods and in to a small clearing.

A pond greeted her, perfect to ebb the thirst of the day. It took her but a moment before she realized there was something dark and teal standing within the quiet pool. . . . Forgetting her daydreams, she paused in her approach, tilting her head as a small, amused smile crossed her features. There was another soquili, black as night but tipped with green, standing plum in the center of the water.

Was he drinking or bathing or just cooling off his hooves? Caring little, the mare chuckled softly before ducking her head. "I hope I'm n-n-not interrupting anyth-th-thing," she laughed, aqua eyes bright with good humor.

Faolen eyed the water some more, drifting I and out of the reverie that water always gave to him. Thinking of another time he had been in the watr for such a long period of time. Finally he began to focus again but didn’t hear the approaching of the mare. Fall made the ground crunch and crack so loudly, kalonas probably loathed it when trying to sneak up on their innocent prey. Poor prey.

Luckily, the sun had just enough strength to it to keep the pond at a decent temperature and the rest of what kept him happily submerged was the extra fur outside of the water made him feel maybe too hot. A grin touched his features and Faolen spun around in the water. Coming face to face, save for the water, with a mare just as she spoke to him. Well now, he’d been wishing for company, but did it make sense for them to come when he was uh.. Indisposed.

Sloshing towards the water’s edge, not even attempting any grace since the mood of the meeting really didn’t call for it Faolen shook out his dampened curly mane and grinned, “Nay! I was just goin’ to head out.” Not precisely true but his hooves would get wrinkled or something like that with too much play time in the water. Chuckling at the idea, Faolen shook himself out several feet from the mare before moving closer.

“T’name’s Faolen, if ye will. An’ ye are?” The burr wasn’t nearly as thick as his father’s and had a more playful note to it. He carried much of Az in his looks with the black and white… Only the touch of teal separated him and his mother.

((So short sorrrry. ;; I'm so exhausted I can't think right now. ))
Eponine grinned softly as the dark furred and teal touched male trotted forward. He was quite the sight with his dampened coat and curled mane, but she could appreciate it. Water proved to be wet and there for often a dangerous medium when it came to ones appearance. Thankfully, the male was predominantly dark in coat, so much of the damp appearance was overlooked.

It pleased her that the male seemed to be an amicable sort. He wasn't rolling his eyes or pawing irritably at the ground, and conversation seemed to come breezily to him. It was nice to not have to work for a few kind words conversation - sometimes her brothers and Ezriel were just too much!

Blue ears pricked as the male spoke, and it took the girl a moment to realize what sound so off about his voice - he had some sort of an accent! It was quite unusual to hear, but the burr was pleasant sounding and tickled the girl pink! If only she could have been able to speak like that and not have so very a thick stutter! Aqua eyes bright, the girl gave a soft chuckle and ducked her head.

"Tis a p-p-pleasure, Faolen. I'm Ep-p-ponine!" She glanced over at the water, eyes alight with good humor. "D-d-didja enjoy your s-swim?"

[One eyebrow raised lazily while he was getting himself situated, he’d met a couple other Soquilis that stuttered but that tended to be out of fear. Not that he wanted her to do that because she feared him. Actually, it was rather nice to know that she just did that because of well.. Herself instead of the idea that he was some fearful creature to dance and shy away from.

If only they could read minds - she was glad that he wasn’t throwing a fit about having company, but he himself was feeling the same thing. Some mare came across as little Ice Queens that rolled their eyes and tried to get rid of him.. Faolen could stick like glue when the time called for it.

“Enjoy me swim?” Drawling lazily because of the brightness that had come to her eyes when he spoke. Faolen looked back at the water a bit wistfully, “Oh aye, I’ve always been part fish.. I’m afraid though that today may’ve been me last swim til Spring gives up to Summer.” A sad thought, but nothing could really be done about it… Winter had it’s own charms.. Like attacking his brother Finn with snow.

“The pleasure’s mine, lass.. An’ such a pretty name. I can’t help but thinkin’ that ye remind me of someone.” Only in the back of his mind though.. Such a faint thing.

Eponine's smile grew as Faolan continued to speak, his exotic drawl and speech a touch on the alluring side. Part of the girl wished she too could harbor an accent - but not everyone had the same blessings! Uniformity was boring and had she her own strange speaking pattern (besides a stutter) his own burr might harbor less of an appeal!

The mare glanced over at the cool water and gave a soft nicker. "Winter is f-f-fast approaching, I fear, but instead of s-s-swimming you can also pl-pl-pllay in snow!" She chuckled and shook out her long, white mane. "Mightn't be quite the same thing but you can surely get just as damp!"

Oh, Eponine was looking forward to winter. Perhaps it was a vanity thing - her blue coat would fit in perfectly along with the touch of ice and snow. The blue-grey clouds and the hint of sunshine at dawn. . . . Her coat would be quite fitting to the cool weather. Kal had been blessed by Autumn, and even this Faolan looked to be touched by night and summer grasses . . . but Eponine? She was winter's child, and forever would be.

Blue ears twitched and she chuckled as the stallion admitted his curiosity. "D-D-Do I have one of th-those faces?" She teased, aqua eyes bright with good humor. Faolan's markings himself were quite familiar now that she looked at him. The touch of teal on a darker coat. . . Even the way it danced upon his hooves like socks.* In fact, he looked surprisingly like a darker version of her father. . . . .

Squinting the mare gave another good natured chuckle and tease. "Now that I l-l-look at you, though, you have m-m-might have th-that face too. Or at least th-the markings." It never dawned on her that there might be family out and about. Oh, if she really thought about it she might have remembered the story of how her parents met - Cosette and Twilight both in search of their families.

But as far as she knew none of that had proven anything. . . .And no one had told her of living relatives, aunts and uncles.

((*I'm too lazy to look up his picture and am going by memory. *chuckles* Ignore the description if I'm wrong. *will adjust it accordingly late*))

If there wasn’t something almost.. Familiar about Eponine he’d probably be trying to come off as a bit cooler and sexier instead of his usual corny self. Faolen grinned up at her lazily and let her space out until she deemed it time to talk again. He was one that could stand in comfortable silence for ages without a problem.

“Snow does indeed have it’s charms..” Then he put on the most mournful and pitiful face that Faolen knew how to do. Lowing her head and moving over to Eponine as if seeking comfort. “I’ve a black coat.. Do ye know what it’s like tryin’ to fight in snow with a black coat?”

Faolen did enjoy the cold weather. Sometimes summer to him was just too hot and it usually got on his nerves after awhile. In the winter he could work up a healthy sweat without really having a fear of being unable to cool down. One eye raised as he looked over her ice-blue coat. It seemed to have a shimmer about it as if the winter months refused to go away no matter what the temperature outside said.

Two eyebrow waggled at alternating times before he shook his head out. “No Miss Ep, you have a face tha’ is new ter me.. I just can’t help but get the feelin’ tha’ I ought to be recognizin’ yah.” His drawl had slowed a bit and thickened from how lazy he was being. She was so ice… none of his relatives were blue, right? Not on dah’s side of the family and and Granpa Kale certainly wasn’t blue…

“Only one way ter find out! Me parents are Caelen and Azariel… yours?” Mabye their parents were friends and that’s what it would be in the end. Many Soquilis looked a bit alike, but something kept wiggling it’s head about in his craw. Blinking lazily, Faolen tossed his curls up over to the other side of his neck and waited..

Caelen had told him about his family only briefly.. The names were fuzzy but maybe if he heard them?

Eponine laughed at the teal and black stallions pitiful expression. If he was looking to chalk up sympathy it worked, though he almost recieved fits of giggles instead. "Awww," she murmured, aqua eyes softening as she stamped her hoof in the ground. "Poor th-thing. It surely makes you an easy t-t-target, and g-good luck hiding. You're l-l-like a beacon! And l-l-let me guess - during the summer m-m-months you're caught frying within th-th-the heat?" She quirked a good nature brow at her companion, tail swishing happily behind her.

The poor thing - even though his coat was a lovely black and teal, it didn't offer much advantage in any sort of weather. But night time - oh, Eponine was certain he could be a stealthy one!

Caelen and Azariel. . . . Caelen and Azariel. She pursed her lips as she concentrated on the names, brows knitting as she tried to come up with some memory or recognition. She had learned through Zevach and Marius that other family was out there. . . Somewhere. Her white swirled brother had actually bumped noses with one of them too, or so she thought that's what he'd told her. But no name, Caelen or Azariel or even Foalen rang a bell.

Shaking her head, a few of her long, white locks falling over her gaze, Eponine chuckled. "D-d-doesn't ring a bell, sadly. . . My parent's are Cosette and T-T-Twilight." She remembered peeking out of the basket within the cave high within the mountains. . . She knew the story of her parents, knew how they met and how they had travelled in search of family. But it was her mother's side, wasn't it. . . .?

Or had it be Twilights?

Oh dear - she just didn't plumb know. But, even if Foalen and she never understood what drew them in to a sense of the familiar, at least it was something to talk about. Maybe they just had similar spirits and natures.

Faolen almost felt the need to preen when instead of being mocked the way his parents tended to do whenever pouting was his weapon of choice - he got her sympathy instead. Immediately after listening to her talk to him he bucked up, feeling like he’d won his case for why having a black coat made winter a bit of a failure. “Ye got it right..” Darn, he’d have to play the woeful card again to get all the sympathy available, “Aye.. In the summer I roast away like a bug under a glass… can ye imagine?” Probably not, but why not ask?

Nighttime did have a certain appeal for Faolen, because he could go without being seen. Except for when the moon was at it’s fullest. Then his white mane gave him away quite frequently.

His deep teal green eyes were almost pleading as he hoped that she would know why she seemed so familiar. Their talking had been flirtatious, but nothing over the line that would eventually make him feel like an utter a** for behaving the way that he had in the first place. Of course, if it turned out they were friends of the family or extended herdmates or … worse, family. His black coat would come in handy for hiding the blush that would surely flair dramatically.

“Cosette.. I am positive that I do not know that name and I am double sure that I am not related to anyone by blood that goes by that name.” The other name, Twilight, held a bit more intrigue, but in truth it wasn’t a rare word. “I canna be sure from what ye’ve said I shouldn’t know ye.” What else could they do? “Oh duh.. What about yer grandparents? Mine are Kale and…” His grandmother’s name always stuck.

He’d never met the mare before.

Frowning for a few moments the name refused to come fully. “I think it’s something aquatic, like marine.” If they didn’t figure it out sometime soon he’d just give up. Grandad Kale was pitch black. Even shadows didn’t seem to show very much.. In truth, Faolen had a coat that was nearly as dark just a couple shades lighter.

Strangely enough, Eponine could imagine! What would it be like to be a bug under a glass. . . . With no air and the sun ripping in to their buggy little body. To be oppressed by the heat with no relief, to have no where to go because the sun is constantly their. To feel the burn and the pain that comes along with too much sun. . . .

To roast. . . .

Actually, the scene was quite horrific in Eponine's imagination. She glanced up at Faolen and gave a little shudder, her sympathetic nature returning tenfold! "How terrible!" She fussed, brows knitting as she tried to come up for some advice. "Well, b-b-by all means, enjoy th-the winter while you c-c-can! You m-may freeze but I'd t-t-take that over roasting anyday!" The poor stallion, being cooked alive come summer.

As wonderful as warmth was, shame on the sun for being so cruel to the darker coated soquili!

The mare studied Foalen for a moment, pursing her lips as they continued to play the guessing game. Maybe they really were but strangers. . . It could be possible. How many soquili ran across the plains and how many might have a familiar coat pattern? Foalan himself looked a little like Twilight and yet it seemed - -

Wait.

Kale? Marine. . . . "As in M-M-Marina?" Didn't she have a relative, a . . . a grand mother named that? Given, Eponine had never met the mare in person but her father had told her of his family once before. And Kale had been her grandpa. . . . right?

But what about Aunts and Uncles? Perhaps her memory had faded when he had mentioned such names, but more and more the blue touched mare was certain that she was correct on the names. Marina and Kale were her father's parents. . .

So if Foalan's grandparents were the same, then that meant they had to be related! Giggling, eyes going bright, it occurred to Eponine that maybe, just maybe, they were related! Was this one truly her first relative? He did look an awful lot like her father. . . .

So what would that make them then. "Are you my . . my c-c-cousin?" Silly question, especially since she didn't even know she had cousins! But if they shared grand-parents than that had to mean something, didn't it?

Faolen was beginning to feel just a little bit guilty. If the mare had taken him too seriously she might get the idea that he was just hot all the time and wouldn’t feel good ever. Part of why he spent so much time in water was because of the nice cooling effect that it did have on him and those he swam with.

Ut-oh.

Okay, he felt just a little less bad when she started to fuss over him. Attention usually made his conscience shut up quickly. A smile spread across his face and another nod or two. “Yes, Although I can’t hide in the winter I do manage to get away from the sun when I need to.” In the winter the sun still sought him out, but that was a much more pleasant feeling because of the heat over the cool.

Ahh, this Eponine could be become a best friend. Sympathy was comforting. Pity not so much, but he hadn’t been given that.

Onto their rather fluster and frustrating game of guesses. She seemed really familiar, not that he’d met anyone quite so blue, or one that had the same speaking mannerism. Good lord, his mind had probably just decided it was time to crack. If they didn’t figure it out soon he’d just give up on the whole deal.

What?

She knew! The names were beginning to make sense to her too. Why hadn’t he paid more attention when his dad had rambled on and on about the family trees. Most of his family wasn’t on this land, but his ma did have some…

Granddad Kale would probably burst into laughter if he had seen Eppy’n’him going around and around in circles and going the exact same places over again. His face had lost the smile because thoughts could be rather daunting.

How had Faolen even thought her to be a family member? It had to be her temperament, because nothing about her was like his green father or black mamma. Shaking out his mane, Faolen giggled right along with her.

“I have a feeling that yer right, miss Eppy.” It’d be weird if he had been able to give a straight yes or no to her question.. But cousins definitely made a lot more sense. Not like Faolen was her long lost father or something awkward like that.
