Okay, so I switched to tuba about six months ago and I'm really serious about it. So I need a decent instrument to practice on. Last year the school lent me a really sucky one that is about 50 years old, has three valves and a forward facing bell. Now, this wasn't really a problem when I was practicing for marching season and the fingerings were all the same between it and my sousaphone, but I want one to practice on at home that is more like the one I use at school.
It has four valves (in front) and an upright bell.
I found one on ebay that looks decent, but it's only $1,380. This kind of makes me wonder what's wrong with it.
I also can't recall whether or not Schiller is a decent brand.
Help? Advice? Knowledge of where I can find a decent but inexpensive tuba?
I don't really want to ask anyone in my section because only one guy in my section owns his own tuba. He's been playing for like eight years. They'd all look at me like I'm crazy, especially since it's commonly known that I don't exactly have money.
So yeah. Advice anyone?

I can't help you with brands, but a lot of crappy instruments are showing up on e-bay.
Make sure you find some reviews before getting one off e-bay, especially if it seems a bit cheap. I was about to buy something, and found a review saying it was a horrible brand...
As to kman's post, as far as I know, conns are good instruments. At least for horn.

that one looked pretty good. Conn as far as I know is more known for trombones, but as long as they are known for brass instruments I'mm good with that.
I probably should've specified that I'm hoping to find a Bb tuba with four rotary valves in front.
