She raced over the plains, careless while her heart soared. Mane and tail whipped behind her like a banner, as free as her spirit and just as wild and unruly. Though Eponine was a good girl, though she tended to follow the rules there were spirited pieces about her that had yet to be discovered, little secrets here and there that none had yet to know.

She wasn't all innocence and naivety.

Well . . . all right, maybe just a little.

But tonight the mare made of ice and mist was on a mission. The surprisingly warm autumn day was coming fast to an end and she was making her way to the bluffs. Tonight she wanted to witness the end of such a day, to see such a glorious shift of colour. The blue skies were already orange, but pinks and purples were fast to follow! Though it was early - much too early to think about turning in for the night - the bluffs would be a perfect place to perch!

Certainly she'd have to watch her step on the way down buuuuut. . . . even a sprained ankle or fall would be worth the sight she was hoping to see. Part of the girl wished her family would have joined - but her brothers were no where to be found and her father and mother looked as if they needed some quality time alone.

Such was the way of things, though. It was becoming more and more difficult to keep in touch with her friends and acquaintances - they all seemed to wander and all lived a life of their own. Leon was . . well. . . she hadn't seen him since their first meeting, and Aureate could be anywhere - on land or somewhere within the sky!

But the mare was accustomed to such things. Wandering the world came at a heavy price, one that meant she was often alone. Yes, she met many in her travels, but while wandering it was difficult to keep them in one place and they weren't always there upon return. Maybe someday she'd pause and settle, like her parents, but for now life was meant to be explored and experimented!

The ground began to shift, began to change. The cluffs spiraled high above her but she'd been to them so often she knew exactly where to go. Running without a care, the blue mare only began to slow as the surface of the ground began to change from solid grass and soil to a more rocky surface. It wouldn't be long before she reached the top. . . . oh, but she did have to hurry.

This show was one in a million.

Perched on one of the highest peeks, Aureate watched the sun sink lower and lower into the sky with narrowed blue eyes. As soon as the golden orb touched the land, he would launch himself into the sky, his ritual Sunset Dance.
Closer. Closer.
There! As the base of the orb touched the horizon line, a stallion's elated cry filled the air and a great black shape thrust itself from the mountains. Plunging down, he kept his wings angled like a hawk and his forelegs stretched, plummeting toward the lower peaks.
A snap of his wings and a tuck of his forelegs saw him barrel-rolling out of harms way and then winging back into the 'center' of the sun. Claiming the air painted in bold golds, Aureate soared, dipped, spun and danced on the winds, his joyous song fluttering through the air.
This was life!
Having a flare for the dramatic, the Golden Rose had taken to putting on his stunning aerobatic display at every sun down, though he was quite sure no one ever watched. They didn't need to, Aureate flew and sang and danced for the joy of it... Here he was free and wild, and when he grew tired of his dancing, or the sun had set, he would land amongst the peaks and let the autumn winds cool him...
"But for now." He rumbled, pulling out of another spectacular dive. "To the sky!"

Eponine continued her ascent to the peak of the cliffs, occasionally turning to glance at the sun. Ooooh - it was getting closer! Sunsets and sunrises were the most spectacular thing to witness, especially because every night and morning it was different. Nothing was the same and the beautiful colour they poured over the world could never be recaptured, even in the most vivid of imaginations and memory.

The long maned blue lady trotted as quickly as she could without tripping over the loose stones and pebbles, oblivious to the fact that her friend was waiting for the right moment to fly. It had been quite some time since she'd run in to Mr. Aureate. . . . in fact, she really hadn't run in to many of her closest friends and family lately.

Was life truly that distracting or did she just have the worst of luck when it came to timing?

The sun was partially dipped beneath the horizon by the time she made it to her ledge. She had dubbed it as her own as it had (in her opinion) the most beautiful view. Heaving a small sigh as she caught her breath from effort, her braided tail swished behind her as she gazed out over the horizon.

Up here she could be anything. Up here, the world looked a little smaller and she felt a little stronger. There were higher peeks and cliffs out there, she knew, but without wings the young mare could only go so far. Smiling softly, a flash of movement caught her eye, a darkened silhouette amongst the living. What on earth. . . ?

It had hooves and wings, and the long tail behind it dubbed it as a soquili. But who exactly, she wasn't sure. The sunlight facing him caused her to see nothing but shadow. What parts of the shadow were lit by fiery sun was stained orange, so the colour could be anything. With a touch of envy she watched as the soquili soared freely amongst the sky, elegance and grace allowing it a freedom she never and would never understand.

Plane Jane's like her could only imagine the life of a winged soquili, or even a unicorn for that matter. She was ordinarily Eponine, but in a way, she wouldn't ever want to be anyone else.

Pleased by both a sunset and a bit of a show, the girl could only take it as a good sign.

Soaring up, up, up once more, Aureate paused just beyond the circle of burning gold. To any watching, it would have appeared as though the black stallion stood on the top of the sun, posed in a rear, wings still for a single moment. He raked the sky with his hooves and then dove, spiraling and spinning before the circle. Each dip and dive brought him close to mountains, or trees, but always he spun away, circled, escaped unscathed. He had practiced all his stunts dozens of times, and once, he had not been so good as he was now.
But none of that mattered. The freedom he enjoyed for the moment was all he paid attention to. He did not notice the mare the color of mist watching him.... She was a faint swirl of cool color beyond the fiery golds, and reds, and blacks of his world. He was the stallion of sunset, all bold colors, daredevil moves, and mysterious eyes. The night was comming, which was like a death to him... So until that death he enjoyed his life, and wished the sun would not set so fast.
His time was almost out.

((*flails* I thought I'd responded. . . . ugh. Sorry for the delay, Lat! ;_; And also sorry for the shortness. ._. ))

Eponine watched the show, admiring the flight of the dark winged one against the orange and pink sky. The way they swooped and dove, the way they dipped and maneuvered in flight. . . . Oh it was absolutely breath taking! As she stood at the cliffs edge, admiring the scene, she herself could only imagine what it might have been like had she harbored wings. . . .

To soar high above the sky, to wheel and turn and trample the clouds - what was it like way up there? What did the world look like from a Wind's perspective? Breathless by the display, Eponine couldn't help but giggle as he stood upon the sun. Down, down, down went the golden orb, with darkness fast approaching. It made it difficult to see the male as the silhouetted figured began to become one with night. Purples and blues had begun to overwhelm the world as day was but moments away from night. . .

Dusk truly was a beautiful time.

When the winged stallion became too hard to see, lost amongst the night, Eponine glanced up at the stars that were beginning to peek down at the world. They blinked, playing games of hide and seek and ushered in the night with their mischievous light.

It was going to be a wonderful evening. . . .

Now if only she could find her way back down.

((Its ok! *petpet*))

Aureate sighed and hovered in the air, looking to the horizon. The sun was gone... Gone... Gone for another night... True darkness now claimed the sky.. Blacks, Indigos, Deep blues... Tones he identified with, true, but not as glorious as the dance of black and gold at sunset...
With a final regretful sigh he tilted his wings and turned toward the mountains, seeking a place to land. There was a lake somewhere amongst the peeks, where he could drink and rest until he wished to return home...
Hold on!
"Eponine?" He called, circling lower, lower. The swirl of mist and moonlight resolved itself to the figure of a familiar mare, a most beloved friend. "Eponine!"

The ice touched mare was beginning her descent down the cliff side, slowly maneuvering so she didn't slip and take a tumble instead. That wouldn't be good, she mused, especially for her health! Broken bones or death just didn't work for her, or so she liked to muse. Squinting in the darkness, certain that the performer of the evening had left, it was only at the sound of wings on wind that she glanced up. And at the call of her name, the mare did a double take!

It couldn't be - no, no wait, wait a minute - it was! The black form with long locks and a long tail, and there was a touch of gold tipping those great pinions upon his shoulders. And to top it off, she could barely see the bloch of gold against his flank, the bloom of some rose. . . . .

"Aureate!" Delight danced over her features as she almost reared in delight. She stopped herself, though, remembering the loose gravel beneath her hooves and that there was a wee bit of danger dancing on the cliffsides. Best wait til she was back on solid ground for that!

"That was you d-d-doing all th-those tricks out th-there?" The awe and maybe a bit of envy laced her voice, though her expression was nothing but gentle and kind. Again, how envious was she over those who had wings! "Oh, b-but my how you've gr-grown!"

It was hard to see him in a sense, but truly they both had gotten rather big in the down time of their friendship. Some of her best memories were with the black and golden colt - ah, she hoped her friendship was as important to him as it was her! "how've you b-b-been?"

If she was chatty it was because she was excited, and she felt she had to get everything out before he decided to fly off again.

As if he could just fly away!
"Eponine!" He laughed and spiraled down to land before her, nuzzling her happily. "Its so wonderful to see you! How have you been!? And your brothers? Your parents? I missed running around with you!"
He blushed suddenly, glad of the darkness. "You saw all that... I.. Well.. Yes, it was me..."
He trailed off, ducking his head shyly. "I do that... Most every night, really..."
Grown? Yes, he suppossed he had.. When last they had seen each other, they had been but foals... And he was a long step away from the gangly colt... He puffed up a bit, flaring his wings.
"Aye, I have... And you! You look lovelier than ever!"

Eponine was absolutely delighted by such a fortuitous meeting. It had been far too long since she'd been in such good company, and she wondered why they hadn't met up sooner. They'd been such good friends as foals, exploring the woods and getting in to mischief. So what had happened? Why the distance?

Oh well. What did it matter? They were here now and much, much larger than before! Though she attempted to dismiss it, she was rather jealous of his wings. What was it like to fly, to soar, to have freedom to soar in the clouds and play games with the stars? He had moved so gracefully within the heavens, so well practiced he was in flight - it had been hypnotizing!

No, she had no wings, but that didn't mean she couldn't appreciate those that did. The young mare blinked at Aureate's confession - had he not wanted to be witnessed, to be seen? Perhaps she shouldn't have watched but. . . all the same, what was done was done. Her features broke in to a grin and she chuckled, blowing some of her white bangs out of her eyes. "Well it was b-b-beautiful," she confessed, her voice breathless from excitement as well as harboring a strand of wistfulness.

Dipping her head at his compliment, in an almost coy manner, the girl chuckled and offered him another nuzzle. No matter how long they'd been apart and changed, he'd always be her best-friend and companion. "T-t-time's treated you well t-t-too," she responded, pausing to ever so gently pull softly at a few strands of his long, ebony mane.

Ah . . . she was always a hair puller - age had yet to remove such a quality from the mare.

Idly wondering what he had been doing with his life that he had not seen his best friend in so long, Aure sidled closer to the dainty mare. He had missed her, welly and truly... And though he'd traveled far, he'd always come back.. Yet, he'd not seen her in so long! They were grown now!
"I'm sorry I've been such a poor friend." He offered softly. "We should have seen each other more than we have.... And as far as all that..."
He twitched a wing to indicate where he had been flying. "I thank you... I don't think anyone ever watches, but it is something I do for every sunset..."
He grinned. "I thank you." As she pulled his hair he squaked in outrage, grinning and nipping back at her mane.
