I don't think your turtle would survive if you let it out. Maybe he likes his lethargic life in the cage... :3
I know tortuoises, I live in a desert.. your not suppose to pick them up. why? because if they get scared and they do.. they release a wave of their liquids out their back, you know piss.. and they become dehydrated and die.. they store alot of water in their body because it's very scarce.
I think this rule does apply to turtles though the average owner keeps him in a tank with water..
I suggest you read up on the internet about turtle care.. it may give your turtle more years than it would if you didn't know some things.
anyway the desert turtle owns[tortuoise] because the biggest turtle is a tortuoise. >)
