We had a blood drive here at work today through the Red Cross. I've donated blood in the past, however, never through the red cross.

The needle was larger than what I'm used to...no big deal.

The guy missed the vein and had to fiddle around.

After they drained me of my blood, I had OJ and some cookies and felt fine. So I went to the cafeteria for my free lunch.

Almost collapsed waiting for my burger to get grilled, and got on my knees after I handed in my lunch coupon.

I've been lying down in my office ever since. I have not gotten anything done yet! Horray for friday.

Has anyone had similar experiences?

That's pretty trippy. Of course, folks usually feel weak after a couple of pints are removed from them, but that was pretty severe sounding.

I've never felt that weakness much before. I mean, I never went on a 3-mile run after, but I never felt the fatigue they said I should. The last time I gave blood was during a hot summer day when it should've been the worst, but I just hopped off the bed, grabbed a cookie and headed straight for my sweltering car on my way home.

Not much more I can say other than take it easy man.

I've always wished I could give blood, but after I blacked out when going to the counter to check out after getting some blood drawn once, I didn't really think it was a good idea (since that was comparatively little). Plus since I've been out of the country recently I'm probably not allowed to for a little while or something like that.

So yeah, the blacking out is scary. sad They said it mostly happens to tall people because their blood pressure gets low or something, I dunno.

Well it could be many things. I have given to red cross and I stopped because they kept having a hard time finding my veins. The last time I gave blood they pulled a nerve with the needle- it hurt!

Anyway, I'm going to write down a few questions here, any which may help.

-Did you have enough fluids besides the OJ that day? (Since you were in the cafeteria it could have been lack of food or hydration, even with those little treats they give you can still not have enough in you to restore energy)

-Did you get a lot of sleep the night before?

-Were you stressed out that day or the previous day? (even for something unrelated).

It sounds like low blood pressure though, so even being "too relaxed" and not getting a lot of sodium will do it to you sometimes.

The human body is an amazing thing- but also a complicated one at that.

I almost always pass out or come close to it when they have to draw blood from me. I'm not afraid of needles or anything, I just have a very low blood pressure and when you take some out, there's not enough to get to my brain! mrgreen

Nurses tend to get excited when I say "I'm going to pass out" and fall over, but OJ usually makes me feel better. I don't give blood though because I'm such a weakling.. though I feel very guilty about it.

they don't want my blood. I went to the blood drive at uni several years ago and I got a sticker saying "I tried to give blood today"

i tend to get really dizzy and see spots whenever i donate blood. though they love my blood. my iron levels are always high, leaving my blood a darker color. i also have an extremely common blood type (a pos) so the blood bank here tends to run short on it through the winter when we have so many serious winter collisions. they usually give me two glasses of oj because my blood pressure is so low. they also won't let me stand up for about 45 minutes after donating.

I don't recall ever fainting when I've given blood in the past, but then again back then I was so afraid of needles and stuff that they always had me look the other way and even let me rest A LOT before letting me get up and walk around. Some times they even gave me something to eat and drink when I was giving blood. On the flipside, my mom almost fainted the last time she gave blood AND she even felt really sick thereafter. I dunno what causes those things because I used to give blood every winter and every summer until I was diagonised with Diabetes. rolleyes

I've only given blood twice and never had any issues. Besides a stiff arm. They even sent me a nice little card with my blood type on in, the way I found out what what blood type I was, B negative.
Now I don't give blood.
