I know for myself one of the main problems in trying to tickle is actually initiating the first tickle - as i don't want to seem 'odd' etc. So my usual method is to take great offense to something that has been said - not even about me, could just be anything vaguely negative - or try and prod an attack from them first.
In response to this i can then poke them or attempt to tickle them, which will cause them to attack back, or move away, either of which are viable reasons for a full on tickle attack!

I would just start out little like poking their side, if they seem to like it, you can say something like: "Are you ticklish!?" joking around, and take it from there.

Depending on who you're spending time with that whole ... Take offense thing can still seem odd. Even so... I try not to always turn tickling into a punishment (Albeit, it sure is fun that way too!) But my favorite initiation method is to start the poking game. One good poke to the side can be the determining factor... See, as soon as someone pokes me, I immediately bend into a ">" or "<" shape... OBVIOUS Dead giveaway. However... You can turn it into an Epic battle. You poke them and then look away and see how long you can go with that until you get a good opening. Then (This works better with fingernails) you do the spider on a spot with a good reaction. If they laugh or smile, then their screwed! You have a perfect reason to keep going. Tell them that they're enjoying it. When they ask to stop, pose a good question like why you would stop if they were enjoying it so much... They're smiling. So that must mean they're enjoying it... Right? twisted
Even if they're not smiling. Even if they still jerk away and scream... Ask what's so scary about a little tickling. Then show them it's nothing to be scared of.

Yeah I agree, why do people hate being tickled? It's like hating being happy. >_>;; Most of the time I will just right off start to grab their sides and give this evil fake laugh like, "Gahahahahah! WHAT NOW!?" They they will start laughing more. My gf, she just tickles me and makes noises like, "TEHEHEHEHEHEHEEE!!!" or "GRRRRR!!!!" or somethign nonsense and it makes it more tickly lol.

The weird thing about being tickled, is that I LOVE to HATE it.
