Much of the choicer debate is based heavily around the definitions of individual words and legal terms. For example, fetus, person, murder, malice. whatnot. I personally dislike this because if the wording or laws change, logically, their stance must change with it. For example, if feti ARE called people by law, and then their killing is murder (As it is killing a person with the intent of killing that person) and they now support murder. The ease of their argument to be destroyed by the simple changing of a term shows how paper-thin it is. At least for those who use definitions of current laws and words primarily.

I hope you're talking about debating about abortion in general, not the ED thread.
I think that discussing abortion, for me, involves both legal and ethical terms. But I tend to be more about ethical concepts than strictly legal ones (other than explaining about the legal definition of murder versus the non-legal one - which I'm attempting to do only once to any person I talk to - it's hard not to point out some things, for me), like bodily integrity and the right to life (both are used in legal arguments, but I feel they are both fundamentally ethical concepts since neither are actual laws).

I use some medical facts and maybe personal ethics just to help a bit and explain things. I'm not religious and the law don't create humans, we do (with the help of a bit of scienece at times and nature I guess you can say) so who are they to say what is human or a person and why they have to die cause they can't speak or give their opinon? Laws were ment to help protect people and prevent chaos but sometimes they can go too far or isn't strict enough in some cases.
See laws change all the time, sometimes for the better or the worse (there have been stupid laws before and i'm sure they'll make more stupid laws sooner or later). That is why you can't always just depend on that for you stand for or against abortion ( besides people don't always follow the law. So if they did ban abortion, there will still be people trying to get around that so they can abort).
But with medical terms ( and science-doctors depend on science all the time to try and help improve lifes, find cures, to find ways to prevent pregnancies or help woman to be able to have children,ect...) and facts you can explain stages of pregnancy and what goes on during abortion (the the risks and complications can involds both pregnancy and abortion) and then people can decide for themselfs what they think it right or wrong or what is human or not. It's always best to use facts when it debates as well has opinons.
Did you know fetus is a latin word for offspring/unborn child? So what is wrong with saying unborn child in debates? It means the same thing and besides you hear people say "i'm having a baby" or "i'm with child" not "I have a fetus inside me". Fetus is mainly only used for a medical term cause in the feild of medicine they tend to use alot of latin terms ( the reason why was long ago it proved to people that you were educated and are a doctor and they just stuck with it over the years). Doctors, lawers, and people in the field of science or law are the only ones that use latin any more.

I guess my thoughts on abortion would fall best under philosophy?
I see it mostly as an issue of personal rights, for both the fetus and the mother, and personal rights are defined mainly by philosophies (at least the way I've always seen it; John Locke, anyone?).
