It'd all started with a simple question.

"Do you think I'm fat?"

The claim had been innocent enough, and Othieno had answer her as he had been expected to; Of course she wasn't fat. She was the healthiest, most attractive hyena in the savvanah! Of course, his claim might have had a little to do with the fact she was his mate, and a lot to do with the fact he found her behavoir oddly attractive (for whatever reason). There had been no warning bells at first; he'd brushed it off as another one of Izulu's strange needs (the girl did have a rather odd set of them, after all).

It wasn't till four days after the initial question that the male started to worry; each day, at a random time, she'd come to him and ask him that same almost innocent question.

"Do you think I'm fat now?"

Oddly enough, Oth was starting to think she wanted him to tell her that, yes, he did think she'd gotten fat. However, still he refused to give in; he gave her the same answer, time and time again, each day looking more confused than the previous day. It wasn't till a full week had gone by that warning bells began to ring insistantly in his mind, telling him that there was a reason for this question, and that somehow, someway, he wasn't going to particularly like the reason behind the female's logic.

After a week and a half, Oth finaly gave in.

Despite how scared he was to ask just what the bloody hell was in her mind, not knowing was eatting at him. He picked a moment that Enok had chosen to go survey the surroundings of their little camp-site. The lion had decided to take a look and judge if they were in inminent danger, or if they could say where they were without danger of being run out; he'd left both hyena comfortably waiting in a small clearing by some rocks at the base of the mountain and forest entrance. Taking a few moments to prepare himself for the innevitably mind-shattering answer, Othieno finaly lifted his head from where it'd been, laying on the female's purple back, "So..." he began, looking almost awkwardly scared, guarded, even, "Why do you keep asking me if I think you're fat."

Wait for it
, he thought to himself, Here it comes.

She didn't know where the idea had come from, exactly. That seemed to be the story of her life, actually, but that was not important. What WAS important was that her boyfriend--or mate, whichever--was answering her correctly. Well, at least for now. At the moment they were laying beneath a tree near the border of the great, looming mountains, waiting on Enok to finish touring the surroundings.

Enok. Izulu made a face and sighed. They'd had no luck in finding a girl for him yet--but they also hadn't seen any other lions along the way. Maybe there would be some up in those mountains, but that seemed somewhat unlikely. Either way, they hadn't found anyone and that was making her pouty. In a way,she wasn't sure why this was so important to her--maybe she just wanted to see Enok happy. More likely, this was a game and Izulu hated to lose.

Right now, she was content to just lay and ponder it than the jump off to solve the "puzzle," as she was usually more inclined. No, she seemed to have come to a creeping halt in energy and just laid with her boyfriend in the afternoon sun. The idea entered her head, and for the umpteenth time she asked the question, "Do you think I'm fat now?"

"Why do you keep asking if I think you're fat?"

Izulu blinked, tilting her head a little on her paws to ponder that question. Why DID she keep asking? In a split second something had supplied an answer, enough so that Oth may not have thought she'd thought it through at all. The female raised her head, tail thumping on the ground and grinned, "Because that's what women do, right? They ask if they're fat all the time, if they're not. And if they are they avoid the issue at all cost and get really grumpy if anyone mentions it in passing."

"Uh..." he admitted to it; he was stumped. Again. No matter how much time he spent with Izulu, she always managed to stump and leave him awkwardly wordless; something at the back of his mind told him she'd have that ability till the very day of their deaths, "No, not really, love," he arched a brow at her, managing to look at her even from their curled up position, an ear perked up, "They usually just ask once. Not once every day; you were starting to make me think you wanted me to tell you that you were fat," he paused then, almost as if unsure he was following her train of thought correctly, "You don't, right?" a second pause as some sort of survival instinct demanded he elaborate further, "I mean not that you are, and even if you were, it wouldn't matter."

It was right around then that the male forced his jaws closed, frowning at himself; sometimes, he thought, he should USE words. Sometimes he should just stay still, silent, and play dead; he'd heard that playing dead in times of trouble helped a lot of creatures survive. Idly he wondered if this sort of situation counted as a life-threatening one, and if so, if playing dead would ultimately save him.

Shaking his head lightly to rid it of the strange thoughts, he forced himself to focus his attention on his mate, still looking mildly bewildered, "Anyways, I don't think there's much a way for you to get fat," wrinkling his maw, he allowed his tongue to loll over his fangs and onto her pelt; the sun was just beginning to set, but it was still hot, "We don't eat enough for that; and besides, we walk a lot. You wouldn't get fat. Unless you got pregnant," and that's when the male made a forceful mental halt, followed by a mental skid, and a crash into a proverbial wall. He lay upon the female, blinking rapidly, almost as if the thought had never quite occurred to him till that very moment.

Thing was, he wasn't all that sure if he wanted to be scared by it, or excited. He opted for the next best thing; he was awkwardly aware the thought existed in his mind, floating like a ghost, awaiting the right moment to spring out and give him a heart attack.
PostPosted: Tue Oct 23, 2007 8:26 am

"Oh," Was all she replied with at first. Her mind was blank a moment and she tilted her head to one side, ear cocked into the wind. For one strange moment there seemed to be this soft whistling sound, almost as if the wind was blowing through one ear and out the other. It turned out that she was just giving a soft 'whistle' through her teeth, but the impression was no less humorous.

Izulu stared at her mate a good while, then barked happily and once more banged her tail upon the ground. With a wriggle she came back to life, leaning in to bath Oth's neck with licks and nips. Only when he had been thoroughly soaked did she pull away and nuzzle her head against his chest. It seemed as if she'd forgotten their entire conversation.

"I should get fat then,"
She decided a moment later, either never having forgotten, or just finally got around to the point again. Most likely it was the latter. "but don't you dare lie to me about it! Cuz when i'm fat it means we'll have cubs." That seemed to make sense to her--and he couldn't blame her when he was the one that had brought it up. Indeed, he'd probably hate himself later for doing so so rashly! "But I'm not fat yet..."

The last came out in something close to a soft whine. Izulu heaved a sigh against him, "And we haven't found a girl for 'Noky! That's not good... if we have cubs he's gonna be left out."

For a moment, Oth found himself watching her carefully, one brow arched as he cocked his head to one side. Then, some irrational part of his mind told him that perhaps he'd understand her better if he cocked his head towards the opposite side. He followed the irrational instinct and found that no; not only could he not understand any better, but he was getting a headache from all this dumb coking to one side and then the other. So thus he stopped and merely watched her instead.

Her movements indicated the fact she was thinking; rather deeply at that, and somehow, Othieno found he wasn't sure if he should be happy about it, or extremely scared. He opted for the in-between; he waited warily, preparing himself for the outburst that was sure to come.

"I should get fat then."

And... there it came. Despite once more having prepared himself, both his brows shot up, hiding under the long bangs of black hair that cascaded freely over his forehead, "What?" he actually leaned in, almost as if not all too sure he'd heard her correctly, then paused as she continued, making it clearly he hadn't misheard at all, "Uhm, love," he lifted a front paw and coughed into it, no doubt a means to snatch some time, feeling the need to think over what he was going to say before uttering it, "Love; for you to get fat, we'd have to... yeah," a pause, "A few time-" he paused, rolling his eyes.

A part of him was kicking him for not accepting the offer that was so freely given to him; the other part of him was kicking him for being the one that'd brought it up in the first place. Both parts of him were agreeing to kick him; just for different reasons, "You want... cubs?" he hesitated, almost as if not quite sure, "Or do you want... just me, without the cubs...? Or both? ..." another pause followed by a wince, "What exactly, do you want?" oh, he felt a headache coming on alright.
PostPosted: Sun Oct 28, 2007 5:55 pm

"Cubs!" Izulu answered, "I told you that the day we hooked up!" Really, she had, in a round-about way. The conversation they'd had a few days prior had actually managed to find one of the few, sticky portions of her brain that still bothered to hold information tossed against it. "You're my boyfriend and we need cubs for our pride." She nodded defiantly. "... but why wouldn't I want you for that?" There was a blink, and she tilted her head again.

Somehow, something seemed to save Oth in that moment. Izulu considered the faint buzzing in her head for a moment, which was actually her humming though she didn't realize she was. "Though.. i guess we shouldn't have cubs quite yet. Cuz if i'm all fat and lazy then I can't hunt for you, and that wouldn't be right. So we have to wait to find Enok a girlfriend."

The female hyena sighed and whined, "i was looking forward to the cubbies.."

Something inside Oth's mind snapped. It quite literaly snapped; in fact, the hyena would later claim to have heard that distinct sound of it breaking as his mate talked. Idly, he wondered when she'd stopped having that odd, strange effect on him, and swiftly figured that... well, never. And tell truth, he thought as soon as his mind cooperated enough to allow cooherent thought, he'd have it no other way either.

"You," he tried slowly, mouthing the words, one by one as he twitched an ear, almost if the movement would help him in his strange little crusade, "Want cubs," it was not a question; in fact, it was a statement, making it obvious he'd understood her, yet needing the comfirmation that would need to come along before he could do something about it, "Let me.... let me get this straight," moving a paw, the male rubbed warily at his eyes, as if he'd gotten no sleep or rest the previous night and was in much need of it, "YOU, want CUBS."

He was trying to follow her; honest he was, but the idea that had somehow come forther from that singularly innocent question was too much for him. Somewhere, some part of his mind had stood on all four and made a 'woo dee <********> doo!' at her claim, but at the same time, some other part of his mind had excused itself in order to go cower and huddle in a dark corner. The effect it was having on Othieno was rather comical, to say the least; his left eye twitched lightly as he licked his maw, waiting for his thoughts to settle down.

She wanted cubs. With him

Would surprises ever end? "Yeah well, good luck on that one, luff; doubt we're getting a girlfriend for him any time soon. So if yeh want cubs, you're gonna have tah start workin' for 'em rather soonish," of course, needless to say, the more perverted part of his mind had won out, which only served to toss the remaining part of his intelligence straight into the gutter, a moronic smile appearing on his maw as his tongu lolled out, "Guess I'll look forward to 'em too then," ooooooh what a messed up little litter it'd be, too, he thought to himself as he rolled his eyes.

But really. Fatherhood didn't quite sound like a bad idea at all.

"YES," Izulu replied in a voice dramatically slowed down so that he might understand her. She lifted her head to put her nose against his. "I want CUBS... whats wrong with that?" At the question her voice went back to the most normal tones she ever was likely to achieve. However, it was obvious that she was irked now as only a female could be irked. Somehow oth managed to save himself, however, though he likely hadn't meant to.

"Yes, yes you will." She responded to his last line, nodding. The female gave a happy bark, "You can start tonight, in fact. Or... well no." Izulu once more paused, tipping her head, "We do still need another adult female around.. but I guess it wouldn't hurt to start trying..."

There was a strange giggle a second later, "And since the Ivy Lord isn't here that means he won't hurt my babies! Then we can have a whooooolllee army to go track him down!!" She looked at Oth and patted his paw, "Don't worry, I won't let him kill you this time."

As the hyenas' voices became clearer from the near distance, Enok felt the need to pause his step and turn to Raylan, a deep breath shaking his form, "I must warn you; these are rather special hyenas, all on their own, you know," rolling his eyes ever so slightly, he elaborated further, "They were not brought up by their own kind, you see; they've been brought up by lions, just like us, which... means they've got these odd... little quirks to their personalities," a second pause followed as the male attempted to punt his brain into working better; it was a hard situation to explain, at best, but he felt the need to prepare Raylan before the reached both canines.

He loved them both, really; it didn't matter that they weren't blood bonded, or that they weren't even the same species. Enok had come to love and care for both Oth and Izulu equally; even despite the short space during which the small purple female had stayed with them, she'd wormed her way into his heart, and he'd be damned if anything ever happened to either hyenas while he was around, "The female, the purple one," he told Raylan, "Er... thinks she's a lioness; just... just humour her, okay? Don't burst her bubble, she's happy that way and doesn't really hurt anyone," he motioned forward leading her towards the canines, "She used to live in the unity walkers, too, actually before she took up Oth as a mate; Oth is perfectly aware he's a hyena, he's just good-naturedly odd though. Don't take anything he says to heart," and this said, both lions stepped into the clearing just as Izulu proclaimed something about the Ivy king, babies and death.

Rolling his eyes, Enok smirked, "Sure you won't, 'Zulu; hate to break it to you, though love. Oth's never really died," a pause before he wrinkled his nose in confusion, "What's this about babies though?"

Othieno had little time to register what his mate was saying; his mind has happily singing the 'Imma get some tonight' song to listen to much else, really. He'd begun to hum it out loud as Enok entered the clearing. Followed by a lioness.

Instantly both Othieno's brows shot upward, hiding into the thick black mane that fell over his eyes, his maw opening to allow his tongue to hang out, lolling to one side, "Would yeh lookit that; 'Zulu, I think the gods want those cubs o' your, luff," he allowed a short bark of laughter to escape his mouth before be snorted, "Lookit what he brought with him; lil cutie that she is, all black an' white and pink... elegant and regal as any lioness I've seen, Mmmmhmm!" he nodded to himself, pausing briefly before he smirked, turning his pink hued gaze upon his mate, "Well, 'xcept for you, luff; you're more elegant an' much more attractive an' all that shizz," he chuckled softly, giving her face a long wet lick, "I god damn hop yeh don't let it kill me this time, luff; only got so many lives an' all, yeh know."

Having seated himself down to watch them, Enok leaned into Raylan briefly, waving his paw for effect, "And these," he said matter-of-factly, in a whisper too low for either of the canines to catch, "Are hyenas."

Raylan’s only reaction to how Enok described the hyena’s behavior was a slow, calculated blink. She really couldn’t say anything or even bring herself to even begin processing that. Of course, if she had thought about it, she probably would have realized just how likely it was that being raised a certain way could affect you on a grand scale. After all, she was never really socialized very much and it always left her with certain barriers that she couldn’t seem to break through in some conversations. It shouldn’t have been so odd to her then that at least one of these Hyenas thought they were a lion because they were raised with them and that the other had certain odd quirks for the same reason. Of course, her inability to understand it properly probably had something to do with that same lack of socialization that made them so similar. She would probably come to understand it better, given time.

Another thing that Raylan should have picked up on was ‘purple hyena’. After all, the first place she had actually heard a hyena mentioned in detail was when Nitesh had told her about none other than Izulu herself. However, somewhere between being stunned and utterly dumb founded, she didn’t connect any of the key components together. The words that drifted to her ears (like ‘ivy’, ‘unity walkers’, and ‘purple hyena’) should have clued her together about who Izulu was and, more importantly, what she had just gotten into. However, the poor thing was too stunned to connect the dots at this point.

Raylan nodded to Enok’s request of not bursting the purple hyena’s bubble – just in time to be confronted with the gray male’s words. Those citrus eyes widened considerably, her head cocked just slightly to the side, and her ears perked in a manner that suggested she couldn’t quite believe the words coming out of his mouth. Cutie? Regal? She shifted her eyes back towards Enok for a moment, almost looking to him to save her, despite barely knowing him any better than these two. “I’m not.. uh,” she frowned, furrowing her brows together. She didn’t want to offend him, but she didn’t know what to say. “Uhm.. thank you?” Well, that was better than nothing.

The frown stayed on her mug as she plopped herself down into a sitting position beside Enok. Her mind was reeling with all the odd bits of information be whirled her way and the odd compliments weren’t even the strangest or hardest to comprehend. There was an intermingling of mush upped words dealing with subjects such as ivy kings, dying, and babies – that last seemed to have something to do with her from what she could gather, although she couldn’t fathom why. With a little tilt of her head, she leaned in close to Enok, whispering low enough that the canines couldn’t hear, “are you sure they’re sane?” If all Hyenas were like this, she could see now why Enok had seemed hesitant about telling her about them. They were nuts.

Izulu's ears lifted to as Enok and a female stepped back into their midsts. She barely heard her mate's words, considering that the same thought had already streamed through her cranium and come searing out the other side; like most things that generally blew in one of her over-sized purple ears and straight out the other. This one actually managed to knock about a few of the underused nerve-endings and caused a few synapse misfires and suddenly the words came tumbling out of her mouth. "ENOK FOUND A GIRL!"

Stating the obvious wasn't normally her gig, which the two males in the group probably knew well by now. So, it should come as no surprise, when the rest followed, "Since enok found a girl that means Oth can get me pregnant! We don't have to worry about it anymore!" She licked Oth's cheek then stood up to go and bounce around Raylan and Enok, looking the pink marked lioness over. "She seems strong enough," Izulu pronounced after a nod of her head, "Good hips too. She'll do well with us, I think."

That done, the hyena turned and resumed her seat beside Oth, grinning at him, "And you thought it wouldn't happen!"
PostPosted: Thu Nov 08, 2007 4:57 pm

"Yeah well," came Oth's snort of laughter as his mate came bouncing back to his side, "Can't blame a fellow fer thinkin' the impossible can't happen, now can yeh? What were the odds of Enok finding a pretty gal?" He hummed softly upon reaching that point, his tail wagging a dust-storm up behind him, "What with the fact I kinna took up the monopoly an' all when I found yeh."

And that was that, as far as Oth was concerned, after all, his mind hadn't gone much further other than doing the 'bogey' because he was 'going to get some tonight AFTER all'. As far as the hyenas was concerned, life was good. And nothing short of an apocalypse would have convinced him of the oposite; little did he know that said apocalypse was short in the making... had he known, he'd have probably thought twice about 'getting some tonight'. Alas.

Enok was past pondering going to the nearest tree and smashing his head against it repeatedly; his mind could only take so much in one day, and it'd already been broken several times that same afternoon. As it was, the male was still somewhat picking up the bits and pieces so rather than fall grip to panic at Izulu's words, he offered Raylan a pained expression, mouthing a silent "Sorry," at her before he waved a paw, "Yeah, yeah... and if we keep on going down this road, we're going to scare her to kingdom-come," he murmured as he nudged the lioness slightly, leaning in to whisper in her ear, "Don't worry, they're kid of nuts, but absolutely harmless. Told you they laugh a lot... good thing, almost no one bothers us."

Which was true really; few animals dared venture against two grown hyenas and a lion. Now they were two lions and two hyenas; if they didn't scare them off with teeth and fangs, Enok figured they'd knock everyone dead with bad puns. Good lord, "Her name is Raylan, I invited her over; she was all alone, and I figured sleeping together would be better."

"Good on yah mate!" came Oth's unhelpful bark of laughter, "Sleeping with 'er'll sure get 'er to stay alright!"

Raylan’s eyes widened rather visibly as the hyena yelled out that rather random and loud exclamation, “I.. what? I’m a girl but..” she frowned as she stutterd on – she was sure that exclamation had some sort of hidden meaning that she was obviously missing. How was she supposed to know Izulu had been shoving Enok to find a mate and that in Izulu’s opinion, that was probably what he had just done. She hesitated as the purple hyena started to trot around her, leaning one way and then the other, trying to move away from her as she got closer – although that inevitably caused her push up against Enok at some points. She was certainly not used to many things, and being visibly investigated and studied was very much one of those things she hadn’t experienced.

“Hips, what do my hips have to do with anything?” she turned her eyes down at her hips, peering backwards and moving a leg to look – what exactly were good hips? She wasn’t sure she had good anything but she was doubly curious as to why her hips were good and why they were important anyway. She really wished that this pair didn’t dumbfound her so – hyenas were certainly not what she expected! Of course, Raylan hadn’t known what to expect at all, but to find someone that completely made her brain question everything that they said, well, that was something in itself. Raylan knew she wasn’t stupid – sure, she was a little slow to the catch sometimes due to her upbringing – but these two made her feel pretty dumb. Was their insanity just too much for her to grasp?

“I don’t think you could.. quite scare me away,” she said calmly, more calm than she anyway. She stopped wiggling at least, leaning in to listen to what it was that Enok said. She laughed softly under her breath, realizing that the laugh itself made her calm down quite a bit. If she could laugh at something then she wasn’t too busy trying to figure out what in the world was going on. It was a nice feeling, especially when she felt like she was the only one that really didn’t know anything about the current conversation. She caught that the two hyenas were apparently mates, but very little beyond that. “I can see why no one bothers you – I can’t think of anyone, other than myself, that would risk talking to these two willingly,” she muttered, although there was quite the amused undertone.

She smiled as she was introduced, hearing very little dirty meaning in what Enok said. However, as the other male repeated it, she couldn’t help hearing something not quite right about the same words in a different tone. Her ears dropped and she hesitated before finally deciding not to answer that. She picked up on what it meant, and had she been human, her face would have been flushing fiercely. Instead, she glanced to the purple hyena, coughed, and finally managed to get out, “so, uh, what’s your name?”
PostPosted: Thu Nov 08, 2007 5:44 pm

Once more Izulu jumped to her feet before either male could stop her. "IZULU'UMDANSI!" She crowed out the name, happy as a clam with her feet tap-tapping in a strange dance. Tail poised and wagging, Izulu was the picture of hyper happiness. "You can just call me Zuzu, though!" The female gave a slight giggle. Unlike Raylan she knew exactly what the boys were busy... well, Oth was snickering over it and Enok looked as if he'd been gored by a wilderbeast... from behind. She couldn't help another laugh at that, then a sly idea passed through the breezeway between her ears.

"We're going to go make babies now!" She announced, the sly part of that plan completely missing her and only the vestiges remaining to tumble from her mouth. "Come on Oth!" The female hyena grabbed her mate's ear in her maw and drug him, gently, off into the bushes. She at least had enough presence of mind not to do that sort of thing in front of the two "other" lions. Oth trailed behind, happy as a clam and not thinking about the horrible repercussions this was likely to have.

Raylan smiled as the other hyena chirped out her name, thinking for a sheer moment that perhaps the conversation was going to swing in a direction she could actually handle. She could ignore the previous comment, ignore the snickering and the horrified look on Enok’s face, as long as she could get the conversation to swing in a direction that she could understand and grasp a little more properly. “That’s a very pretty name, and it’s nice to meet y-“ she blinked, her voice overridden by the very excited female. Who was talking about babies again.

Raylan actually had figured out how babies were made at a very young age – living in her father’s den had showed her more than once that horrifying process that typically had her curling up in a little ball. She was thankful though that they went behind a bush and did not make her witness it – however, she still felt just a little too uncomfortable even being this close to the pair of them when they were.. you know.. doing stuff.

“We.. should go walk,” she said in a low, almost pinched voice, standing up and flicking her tail at Enok, “you can tell me what that other male’s name is and then what you’re doing and..” she frowned as she heard rustling in the bush, shuddering slightly to herself, “and anything you’d like – let’s just go.” She started to saunter off, ears flattened as if that could make her stop hearing the noises. She glanced back just long enough to let him catch up, then walked off into the distance where the baby making was out of ear’s reach.
