The sun hung low against the backdrop of the mountains, a deep ball of molten gold against a gray sky and sinking ever lower behind the distant blue tips of mountains set up like jagged teeth against the heavens. The late day had sapped some of the usual heat from the lands and had left them generally pleasant, lacking the stifling temperatures that usually drove lions and other creatures either to watering holes or their own dens in need of shade. It meant that travelling at this point was not unpleasant, although for one certain dark-pelted lioness, it certainly was a boring change of pace.

Raylan had become accustomed to waking up and going to bed in a den, with the comfort of knowing that she was safe and that nothing would ultimately harm her. She had only been walking for a couple of hours, true, but she already knew that night would bring that fear of the unknown that had always overwhelmed her before she had found shelter in the Unity Walkers. In a way, that had been what drove her into the jungle, the shelter of such an enclosure – that had been where Nitesh had found her. Regardless, the past was the past, and all she could do now was look towards the future. She did wish the future would hurry up and find her though.

Hesitatingly glancing up towards the mountains, Raylan stopped in mid-step with a sigh. This was ridiculous, she was out here looking for something she didn’t know anything about, and she wasn’t sure what sort of ‘something’ it even was. Sure, she trusted Misae, and whatever it was that she had been gifted – but could you honestly blame her for being unsure? She had spent most of her life running from a monster that had probably died shortly after she left and now she was sent out to chase something down that could be just as hard to find as her father was to escape. She supposed she had to hope luck was on her side, right?

“Maybe I should just wait here,” she said aloud, to herself more than anyone else, though the words died on the air with no ears other than her own to hear them. She sighed once more, tossing the deep onyx tuft from in front of her bright eyes, though it only slid back almost immediately. She didn’t know how much farther she should be walking, for the mountains were growing closer with nearly every step, and she was pretty sure she was supposed to be closer to the actual jungle than she was the mountain range. Irritably, she let out another huff, sending the tuft of hair blowing away from her face with the simple force of the breath.

He was alone.

Thank god for that too. As much as Enok had learnt to love both of his canine companions, enough was enough; he'd needed a break from their constant nagging, and thus he'd excused himself from their presence, saying that he was going to patroll the surroundings of their makeshift little camp-site. He'd lied. He'd known that there were no prides, or packs, for that matter, in the surroundings. He'd made sure to stay on the look out while they'd been travelling, however, the need to escape Oth and Izulu had been too great to ignore.

Thus was why the brown pelted male found himself padding the savvanah, all alone for once, his eyes sweeping over the grass, taking in his surroundings with dull interest. The bulk of his frame moved without the usual elegance and grace of a feline; he looked tired, almost as if he were practicaly dragging himself, but then again, he had a splitting headache. The hyenas had been barking at him for a full week now, the theme of choice still that he needed to find himself a female.

And still Enok had refused to give in. Grumbling to himself, the male turned to glance at the sinking sun, frowning slightly as he decided that it was time to go back... and face the canines again. He didn't want to leave them alone at night (or at any time of day, really, for both Oth and Izulu had a strange tendency to slip into trouble at the drop of a leaf). It was then, however, that he heard the voice.

“Maybe I should just wait here.”

It was carried by the wind (an odd fact, but he decided to not question it for now), and slowly, the curiosity overtook him. Moving to his left, the male followed the direction the voice had come from, lifting his head to inhale the scents around him till one particular one assualted his nostrils; female. He frowned; there'd been no prides on their way here from the jungle, so how come he could now smell a lioness? Inhaling again, Enok found that this female, for whatever reason, was all alone.

He found that to be odd, all on it's own. He knew male lions where pre-disposed to be alone, roaming the land as rogues, however... in his time travelling, he'd not yet seen a lioness, out all on her lonesome. Usually females travelled in a group; either with their cubs, grown or small, or with other lioness. This one, however, was all alone. Why?

He saw her then; just as the sun was setting behind the mountains. It offered him a rare specacle, and for once, he found himself staring; the setting sun outlined her dark form against the savvanah, making her look almost ethereal, her eyes brilliant eyes hesitant, scared... sad?

Kicking his mind out of whatever trance it'd entered, the male padded over, "What exactly are you waiting for?" there was a curious note in his voice as he leaned his large head to one side, his fluffy mane cascading in that direction, allowing her to see golden eyes, much like her own. Unlike Nyekundu, whom had puffed himself up to look bigger, Enok had no need to do such a thing. Without need for any puffing, his frame was doubtlessly larger than the tyrant's, making him look perhaps slightly scary upon sight. There were large diferences, however; the fact that his shoulders were slumped in calmness, the way his eyes shone with a honest, almost blunt light, and the fact he carried no scars upon his pelt, "Uhm..." he pause, his head lowering an inch, almost sheepishly, "I... kinda heard you talking alone," he explained, almost as if needing to justify his earlier question.

Being that she was so enrapt in her own thoughts, Raylan hadn’t seen the male approach. Of course, one might question her sense at that point considering how big and brown he was, but sometimes even the most unusual things can go unnoticed given the right situation. This situation was certainly enough to draw her attention away from really seeing anything. Her eyes were open, and they were gathering images, but somewhere in between her brain and her eyes the process was faltering and the images weren’t being computed properly. It’s the sort of problem that sometimes happens when you’re thinking too hard or too deeply about something.

As it were, to suddenly be talked to by a giant mass of brown standing not so far away was unsettling. As his words brought her out of her quiet but deep thinking, her entire body tensed and her eyes looked almost frightened for a moment. With her ears perked high on her skull, she let those tangerine orbs roll back to him, but once she took in the way he was standing and the general air of being very unthreatening, she almost laughed at herself. All of this talk with Misae had left her on edge and she was getting jumpy even when she wasn’t scared. The only thing she could be thankful for at this point was that Enok really wasn’t a danger to her, otherwise she would probably have been ankle deep in trouble by now.

It took her only a few moments to school herself back into the calm that had been with her since she had learned her father was indeed gone, and she tried her best to smile up at him. Of course, she couldn’t have possibly been aware of the little dramatization that the light was playing upon her form, or that her eyes had been giving away far too much of her inner turmoil. She simply watched him as if everything was normal and played off any irregularities in his words as simple curiosity. She shifted, turning to face him a little better, although it probably did little to stop the light from silhouetting her figure. If she had known what she looked like at that moment, she probably would have laughed – she was fairly humble about her own appearance and any emphasis of it made her shy or embarrassed at best.

“I’m not sure,” she said with a little laugh, realizing as soon as she let the words pass her maw just how foolish they sounded. Well, what else could she tell him exactly? My magical sister sent me out here to chase dreams? That would hardly do. “What I meant to say is that I’m looking for something, but I don’t know what it is, even though I know it’s supposed to be here.” She stopped after she said that and shook her head, the black tuft wavering back and forth as she did so. “That doesn’t make any sense either, does it?” she said breathily, a sigh lingering after her voice. A few seconds after meeting her and he was going to think she was crazy. She made the best first impressions, no?

“It’s perfectly alright though, I mean, how often do you see a lioness all by herself and talking to the wind? I’d be curious too,” she muttered, although she already seemed a little embarrassed at the fact that she had basically just said something before that made little sense. It caused for a sheepish smile, and she glanced away, towards the jungle of all places. How was she supposed to face him after talking such nonsense, especially when she knew that there was no way she could explain it any better. She might as well be crazy, right?

Mistake number one was surely approaching her. Mistake number two was becoming interested in what she was saying; Enok knew this. In his mind, a small red alert had gone off, and somehow, he had half a mind of excusing himself and walking away before it was too late.

He wasn't all that sure when 'too late' came, but as soon as she turned to focus her gaze on him, he knew it'd been, amusingly enough, too late for ages already and he was inevitably trapped. Like a mouse in a small cave without exits; the idea made him squirm a bit, quite an odd show for such a big lion. His frame winced ever so slightly, his ears flopping back as she took a look around them. Curiosity had killed the cat, he'd heard, and right at that particular moment, Enok knew that saying had been made for this exact moment in time. He was almost mildly aware of the gods whispering it to each other as the metaphorically watched them.

Her turned to face him did not help how the light shinned upon her, and had the male been sitting in a chair, (or rather, had he even known what a chair WAS), he'd have slid slowly, but surely, down it to the floor. He was, in all sense of the word, rather 'floored' by both her looks, and her voice, and as much as he wanted to move and LEAVE because oh GOD it was more than too late by then, he couldn't, because his legs were firmly rooted to the floor. And then, she laughed, and Enok forced his gaze away from her, coughing into a front paw in order to still the thoughts in his mind, "If... you're not exactly sure, how are you going to know when you find it? If you ever do," for all purpose, the male didn't really look all that moved; his voice had not cracked, and his pose hadn't moved all that much. As far as the female was aware, Enok must've looked firmly stoic, if not particularly interested in what she was saying. On the inside however, that small red alert had turned into a full grown 'System Failure' which was flashing in huge crimson letters against the screen of his mind.

It was a wonder he was even following what she was saying, enough to actually respond to her, "It makes sense," the words were rushed, the firs sign he was even the slightest bit nervous, really, willing to reassure her, for unknown reasons, "In an odd... way, but it makes sense, don't worry," but oh, if she wasn't worrying, he was making a fine job at it regardless. A pause, during which the 'system failure' in his mind seemed to flicker out as he turned to gaze at her, "You were talking to the wind?" a second pause, after which the power in his mind shut out; the alarm, everything, it all shut down, as if everything around him currently had overloaded his brain enough for it to simply... stop. It was this, no doubt, what spurred his last few words, "What'd it have to say?" he asked, brows knitting in what looked like curiosity.

At any other time, Enok, as down-to-earth as he was, would have never thought of asking such a thing. Alas, his mind had shut down due to overwhelming.... beauty? Grace? He wasn't sure. He wasn't all that sure he WANTED to be sure either.

Due perhaps to Raylan’s lack of socialization, or perhaps her inability to read into the things that drove emotions and actions, even the quicker pace of his words was lost on her. Sure, she thought that perhaps he might have been a little out of breath from a long hike, or perhaps he was just a little shy? There were a million reasons that he would quicken his words up in such a manner and the thought of her being one of them was certainly not on her list of causes. Just like her lack of socialization, there was a lack of knowledge about her own sexuality and her beauty. She was, by all terms, an amazingly beautiful lioness – but sadly, she had never spent any amount of time around anyone willing to tell her so. She had, in fact, been subjected to quite the opposite – a series of rages that told her how worthless she was. Although she had never been called ugly outright, those sorts of things were certainly no aid to one’s confidence.

“Well, that’s sort of my dilemma here,” she said with a weak smile on her dark mug. He had voiced the very thing that had thus far been plaguing her thoughts. How on earth was she supposed to recognize what she was looking for if she didn’t know what it was? She wished that Misae and the wind had been a little more descriptive on the subject. “I don’t know what I’m looking for, so I don’t know what to be expecting. Of course, I’m not sure how I’ll know that it’s the right thing once I find it, or I could just miss it entirely because I don’t expect something to be it,” she muttered, realizing as she went on that it simply sounded more and more ridiculous. A day ago, Raylan wouldn’t have condoned such senseless chatter, but after her meeting with Misae – well, that had changed quite a few things, hadn’t it?

“I doubt it makes very much sense at all, actually, but I do appreciate the attempt at making me feel better about it,” she said with a laugh, shaking her head and letting her eyes roll up towards the sky. Of course it didn’t make sense, she was rambling about something that may or may not even exist and acting as if she should be expecting it any moment! Only crazy lions talked about things that way – well, crazy lions and Misae perhaps. There might have been a few others like Misae that talked that way as well, but other than that, the only other ones were crazy lions. Maybe Raylan was a little crazy herself? She hoped not, but the thought amused her – would she know if she had gone crazy? She could always ask Misae if she found her again, she was sure Misae would know if she was crazy or not.

“Well, that does sound a little odd, doesn’t it? I suppose if I told you the whole story it would sound even worse,” she muttered, turning her brilliant eyes to look back up at him instead. He was a handsome lion, she would give him that. He had beautiful eyes, admittedly, of the same sort of citrus family as her own. “I didn’t exactly talk to the wind, but I talked to it through my sister,” she said, furrowing her eyebrows as she did it, realizing that every word just made her sound more crazy than the last one. “It just told me that I would find what I was looking for on this side of the jungle.” She shrugged, staring back up at his eyes with a little frown on her mug. She didn’t understand it, and if he didn’t run away from her as soon as he heard that crazy talk, she was sure he still wouldn’t know either.

Of course, that made her wonder if she was meant to know what it was – either before or after she found it. She had heard of odder tales from her mother about seers occasioning odder prophecies. The thought, however, made her writhe uncomfortably. She wanted to know what it was so that when it finally showed up, she would know it. What if she missed it completely? Oh, but the wind was a foul trickster indeed!

She glanced back towards him with a weak smile, tilting her head up to look at him some. It was an overly friendly gesture, and probably one that accentuated both her beauty and the odd light that was still highlighting her form, despite her knowing it. Oh, but if she had been aware of these manipulative abilities, it would have been far worse on the poor fellow that had already managed to begin swallowing his own tongue. As it were, she simply smiled now, and let out a purr in that beautiful voice of hers, “My name is Raylan, what’s yours?” Ok, not the most interesting thing to say, but it was always polite to find out who you were talking to – especially when you were ranting on in such a crazy way about things that made no sense at all.

It was mostly due to the fact that his brain had stopped operating that Enok was able to remain where he was, rooted to the spot, sitting down beside her. Which was... rather ironic, really, taking into account the situation at hand. He was allowing pure instinct to drive him, rather than the logic he was so well-know for, and instict was telling him to sit and listen to what she had to say, without judging.

It was a miracle, really, how the male was able to remain silent during her whole explanation, turning only to glance at her once, his head tilting to one side as she explain, "I see," really, no he didn't, but he was beyond trying to figure out a logical explanation for what she was saying; it was hurting his unresponsive brain to do so. Somehow though, this small female didn't quite seem 'insane' to him, so to speak of, and he knew quite well what he was talking about when it came to 'crazy'; after all, he lived with Izulu. If there was anyone he knew to be crazy, it was the purple hyena that Othieno had taken up as a mate.

Or rather, the small female that had taken up Othieno as a mate, for amusingly enough, it'd been her idea. All hers. Which was still mildly amusing, if not entirely ironic, for the lion's mind to process.

Slowly, Enok's mind in question seemed to wake up; albeit slowly, and tentively, enough that he could make heads and tails of what she was saying and formulate enough of a response that wouldn't make him look like an entire dimwitt, "The wind's a trickster," he supplied rather seriously before looking down at her, "Shouldn't listen to it; that aside..." a pause, his brows knitting, almost as if he'd just noticed something, or come to a startling realisation, "There's no one around here, 'xcept us," for a moment he seemed to be trying to decide wether or not he should explain this 'us' to her, however, he figured that if he hadn't taken her to be crazy after her rantings, then maybe, just maybe, he too stood a chance at being concidered... normal, "Er... us being me, and... my friend and his mate; they're uhm," he paused, looking down at the ground, "Hyenas - we're just passing by, but we've been here for days. Not a soul in sight."

It never once dawned on him that perhaps, just perhaps this petite, dark little thing could be looking for him, "The name's Enok," he said, then motioned behind him, somewhere towards the base of the mountain, "You can come stay with us, if you like; it's never pleasing to be travelling alone," and this, of course, had nothing to do with the fact he found her to be a startling beauty and had decided that he'd rather die than watch her get hurt by some rogue. This also had little to do with his possesive, slightly over-protective personality.

Really. Honest.

... Maybe if he kept on repeating that to himself as a mental sort of mantra, he'd start to believe it. However, Enok was doubtful it'd work. After all, he'd been living with himself for year now, and if the lion knew something, it was that denial wasn't something he worked well with.

If Raylan had ever truly met a crazy lion then perhaps she would not have felt what she was saying sounded so utterly insane. Sadly, the only form of insanity that she had ever been presented with was that of her father’s mind – and she typically classified him more along the lines of tyrannical or dominating. If she had know, likewise, that Enok himself knew the likes of one far more mentally disturbed than how she appeared at this particular moment, it probably would have given her a little ease in the situation – although she would have questioned his reasons for continuing to travel with them. Crazy creatures didn’t make very good travelling companions as far as she had ever been told. Well, they didn’t make for very good anything for that matter. Still, she had never had the experience of knowing one she couldn’t judge what they were supposed to act like or not. She just knew that they very often made little sense – and she was doing a very good job at fulfilling that one requirement at the moment.

She frowned slightly as he mentioned not listening to the wind. As far as she had been aware, the wind had been very trustful – or at least Misae had made it out to be. She couldn’t fathom her sister letting her take bad advice from something she seemed to trust so desperately. However, as he mentioned that he and his travelling companions had not seen any other soul around this area, she began to rethink her choice of trusting this wind. Perhaps it really had been playing a trick on her? She sighed and nodded slowly as she thought about being fooled. “I suppose it must be tricky then if no one else is around here,” she muttered, glancing around her out of simple curiosity. True, she could hope all she wanted that a random soul would come gallivanting out of the sunset perhaps, but that was very unlikely – the only creatures here were herself and Enok. Of course, like her companion, it never crossed her mind once to think perhaps that she was supposed to be looking for Enok.

As he mentioned exactly what his travelling companions were, her thoughts didn’t even stray towards thinking he was crazy or nuts or anything of that fashion. Just like her lack of ever meeting someone with a mental problem, she had never met a hyena either. She simply flickered her tail for a moment as she tried to imagine what they looked like – and failed. She had never even really heard of how they were described other than that they were a canine sort of species. Considering she had never really seen anything ‘canine’ she didn’t have anything to really base her thoughts upon. She just smiled and turned those brilliant eyes back up towards him, head tilting slightly, “I’ve never met a hyena before.” Well, that was a good reason for Enok to feel relieved, right? She obviously couldn’t think he was crazy for travelling with them if she had no idea what they were like.

As the next question passed her ears, however, she could only sit there a moment and stare at him. She didn’t have any sort of offensive look on her face, but seemed a little more stunned than anything else. It wasn’t every day that a random male asked you that. Well, Nitesh’s question hadn’t been very different when they first met she supposed – but still, that wasn’t the point. The point of the matter was that he had just asked her something very random and quite unexpected as far as she was concerned. However, he seemed to be genuinely interested in having her come stay with them – perhaps even have slightly concerned for her to be travelling alone?

“I suppose it isn’t and I’ve travelled alone for a very long time,” she said quietly, thinking over her days of running. Not only had she been alone, but she had spent every waking moment looking over her shoulder not only for her father but for other predators. When she actually got to sleep, it was fitful and worrisome. It had been a long horrible experience, but maybe if she traveled with others it wouldn’t be nearly so bad. “I think I’d like that, actually,” she said with a warm tone lingering in her voice, eyes sparkling with a new light as she tried to imagine how much better she would feel to be in the company of someone else while she was travelling.

"You don't know what a hyena is..." it more of a statement than a question, really, his brows knitting together; in way, it was to his favour, he realised, for thanks to the fact she'd never met such animals, knowing that lions and hyenas were not... naturally the best of friends was beyond her. It worked out in his favour, really; what she didn't particularly know, could not hurt her, now could it?, "Huh," there was, for the first time since their encounter, slight mirth lacing the single word, almost as if he truly couldn't believe her.

After all, he'd grown up with Othieno by his side. That aside, their small tight-nitch family had always had to deal with stray hyena (and random rogue lions, really), so thus the notion was in a way, hilarious. He had half a mind of asking her where she'd been brought up, since he knew of little to no places where she could have spent her childhood without knowing what a hyena was. Something stopped him, however, perhaps instinct, perhaps something else; that slight tug at the back of him mind told him that right now was not the best of times to be asking such a thing, and that if he wanted to gain some sort of ground with this female, he should save that question for later on.

Enok would later find out how damn right he'd been in his silent pondering, alas, for the time being he offered her a small smile as he stood from his place, taking a moment to stretch himself out, relief flowing through his previously tense muscles (having your mind audibly snap was quite a stressful event, after all), "Well, if you don't know what a hyena is... something tells me you'll find out soon enough," taking note to explain to her on the way that Izulu was in fact, a special case and that she'd do fine not bursting the purple hyena's metaphorical bubble, the male stood fully up, "Come on then, I'll show you the way," and this said, he turned around, motioning for her to follow him with a clear movement of his head.

Something in the way she spoke... even moved, told Enok that she'd been alone for a long time, and that it hadn't entirely been by choice either. She seemed sweet, almost skittish, and for some odd reason beyond him, pure and... untouched in a way - he'd always thought that rogues, after long times of being alone, fell prey to the distinct roughness that characterised them, yet Raylan here was proving him wrong. If there was a word that flashed in the back of his mind, it was 'Innocence', which was an idea he couldn't quite grasp; regardless, he was unwilling to ask her about her past. That same inkling of an idea that had kept himself from asking where she'd grown up in kept him from asking her about her past.

He figured she'd talk to him when she was ready to do so, all in due time, "Well, for one, it's always good to know someone's keeping watch over you while you sleep. Knowing you're safe. That's the good thing about travelling with others... no harm can come to you," it wasn't necessarily true, but for some odd reason he felt the need to voice this, almost as if aiming to comfort her. He didn't question himself for his own words and actions as they walked, but rather, detached himself from his own mind; it was only bound to give him a headache. That aside, he was going to have to round up some energy to face Izulu; she was bound to pull off one of her 'stunts' when he arrived accompanied by a female, "They're rather cheerful folks, hyenas. They laugh a lot," he said rather randomly; it was almost a warning in a way, as he smirked at her.

It was a very good thing, in fact, that Enok held his tongue and refrained from asking her about his past. Thus far, she had told no one about the monster that had haunted her day and night for so long. The only one she had even spoken to about it had been Misae and that was simply because they both shared the same horrific past. She was never very keen on letting anyone else know about Nyekundu and his reign of terror over the oasis and all of his children – including herself. She had been staying with Nitesh for a very long time and had never even thought about mentioning it to him. In fact, she would have been happy at not ever having to mention it to anyone. She knew that one day, inevitably, there would come a time when she would have to speak of it – but until that day came, she would rather not.

It wasn’t exactly that she didn’t want people to know she suffered or that she had had a hard life – she really wasn’t that prideful. No, it was more or less the fact that she didn’t want to be associated with that monster. She was always afraid that someone would find out and be upset, maybe even hate her for it. She didn’t deal well with being rejected, not after having it happen to her most of her cub life. She knew that Nyekundu had hurt so many, and still more from association. There were repercussions in so many different lands that she had counted herself lucky to find one that seemingly didn’t have his taint. Of course, it had inevitably, like they all did – which was why she had begun to move again. Even if she wasn’t supposed to be looking for something, she still couldn’t have stayed. She didn’t want Enok to automatically hate her simply because he knew who her father was. It seemed so likely that he had known someone affected badly by him – just like everyone else. Needless to say, the farther they stayed from questions of the past, the happier she was.

“Is it a very long way?” With a small smile, she pulled herself up onto her feet and began to follow him in a calm but rather sauntering stride. She had grown into adulthood gracefully, although she was still oblivious to her own sexuality as a female. That probably meant that there would be more than a few awkward situations for Enok (considering there had already been a small one) where she would simply be unaware of her effect on him. It was a promising amount of future comedy, regardless, but if she had known she would have apologized to him profusely. Poor thing, her lack of society for so long had had quite the odd effect on her.

“I’ve always been afraid of sleeping by myself at night, at least before I stayed with the Unity Walkers for that little while,” something in her voice obviously said that she had been sad at leaving whoever these Unity Walkers were – but she didn’t dwell on it. Better to leave all of that in the past and move on. “I know it can be very dangerous out her by yourself, and it always gave me really fitful dreams, especially if I couldn’t find somewhere secluded enough to sleep. I never really slept well when I was alone.” That was the truth – she had originally gone into the jungle thinking that all the predators would have a much harder time finding her in that dense vegetation. Of course, it never really occurred to her that there were predators there that were used to navigating it. She still probably didn’t.

“They laugh a lot?” she said with a small smile, her brilliant eyes turning away from the horizon stretched out before them and looked up at his instead. “That doesn’t seem too bad, happy creatures are always the best to be around.” Of course, she had not heard any of the warning in his voice or taken that smirk for anything other than what it looked like. Sometimes Raylan was a bit slow on picking up on the hidden meanings embedded in conversations. She would come to learn with the new company she was about to associate herself with, surely.

Glancing over his shoulder, Enok arched a brow at the dark little female that followed after him; something told him she was going to get a fistful of reality soon enough, "Yeah, happy peeps indeed," he refrained the snort that had begun to bubble up his chest, turning to face forth before rolling his eyes. Despite the movement, there was clear mirth in the small smile he held as they moved.

Wouldn't this be amusing?
