She was large and in charge--! Or at least, that was what she was supposed to think, right? Aging, growing taller, becoming an "adult". It was supposed to be...interesting or life-changing, or whatever the bloody hell it wanted to be.

Trotting along the edge of the water as she had found herself doing more and more frequently, she glanced out at the dark recesses, wondering if maybe this time she'd see another of those odd soquili with the amazing tails...

She knew this time would be no different than any other time, there was nothing "special" in the air (not that she'd hoped there would be, she didn't believe that nonsense. Really. ) and from her many other experiences--she knew getting her hopes up would be useless. She should just continue on with her life, maybe go out and meet an excessive amount of other Soquili to make up for her lack of experience from her childhood--

And yet here she was, completing her small ritual once again. Lord, she needed help.

Castellan had grown familiar with the shorelines in recent weeks, and although he usually showed proper caution and stuck to the rocky floors instead of frolicking about the waves like a silly fish, some nights he couldn't help it. Tonight was one such night. The air was almost as warm as the water, and yet the chill of the breeze against his wet body thrilled him.

With an almost childish delight he splashed around the boundary of water and air, marveling that the wind was so similar to water currents against his spread fins. Despite that his mane never behaved at all the way it should when it was above water. The moment it was pulled above the surface of the water it hung limp, and flattened itself so unusually against his face and neck. Not even the air currents could blow it back to it's swirling, wavy motion as long as he stayed up.

It wasn't long before Castellan remembered what fun he had the last time he played in the waves, and how good he had gotten at leaping out of the water. Unfortunately he didn't remember how much it had hurt to accidentally leap into the shallows and bonk his head. That painful reminder would probably come later. But for a couple brief seconds, the one who went unnoticed on the shoreline would indeed see something special in the air if she had been looking.

Sand splattered everywhere as lifted her legs high to prance a bit instead of merely trotting. With a soft sigh, she remembered she'd have to clean her hooves out later. Sand wasn't very kind to the cloves dividing them. Feeling the salty water splash up against her legs as she entered the little waves that lapped onto the beach, she belatedly realized--once more--that she'd have to find a place with fresh water afterwards to get the salt out of her fur.

Ears flicked at the soft sounds of splashing and she had half a mind to ignore them, she'd had so many false discoveries she wasn't sure she wanted another, but she looked anyway.

Boy, was she glad she did.

Skidding to a halt, green eyes widening in shock and surprise. There was something in the water this time and she'd seen a similar form before...

Having not smacked his head against any sandy sea bottoms, Castellan unknowingly favoured the unicorn on the shore with another look as he cavorted and leaped into the air again. It really was thrilling, being airborne for even that short time.

Thankfully he chose not to tempt fate a third time, but rather swim close to the shoreline and curl his tail around a large rock in the shallows and sway with the waves. Air really was exciting, he had no idea why so many like him chose to avoid it.

Watching him with wide green eyes, she took a few more steps into the water, before she registered that she was most likely walking to her death. Swimming wasn't her strongest attribute.

She backed up a few steps, trying to save her dignity and glanced up in time to see his own look at her. "Ah..!" A few stumbling steps backward and an embarrassed expression later she was free of the water, though she had shreded a good amount of her personal dignity. She'd curse herself for that for quite a while.

What was she going to do? He was coming closer...! Though, he did seem to be coming closer to her, not that she could blame him, who'd want to talk to someone like her? She didn't have nearly as interesting a tail as he.

It had taken the enthusiastic stallion a couple minutes to actually clue in that the creature on the shore was one of those soquili with four legs. Why was he only realizing it now? His ears swiveled in the mare's direction, quickly followed by his head. She had been in the water, that was had thrown him off!

With a delighted grin, Castellan unwound from the rock and swam as far into the shallows as he could without beaching himself, even wiggling and crawling across the bottom for a pace or so to be closer to the mare. It was a good thing he hadn't found himself a Kalona to play with, he was in too close to land to make a quick retreat.

"You were in the water!" He said eagerly, his tail stirring the water's surface as it swayed back and forth only half submerged.

Nayeli could feel herself mentally panicking at the realization he was coming closer to her. What was she supposed to do? Her original thought process about meeting these creatures hadn't gone that far--she hadn't expected to ever see one again, really. It had been something she could do to pass the boredom and now...now what?

Jumping in surprise as she realized that the creature had not only spoken but had come close enough on the beach to speak with her, she panicked for a moment more before gaining the inner stability to answer his question.

"Ah-ah, yes, I was." She answered in return, attempt a smile and a nod of her head--which was shamefully jerky. Her light green eyes flicked over it's form, recognizing in a vague way that this one was male; and soaking up its fascinating shape as if this would be her one and only time seeing such a thing. It probably would be the last time and such a pity too.

"I-Is that impressive or something...?" She asked, and would have smacked her forehead if she could. What kind of quetion was that? A stupid one! He'd probably think she was some sort of idiot!

"I didn't know ones like you could be in the water." Castellan replied cheerfully, a big grin spread across his striped muzzle. This four legged mare seemed a little flustered for some reason. Maybe it was the temperature, the air was a little cold against his body so maybe she was cold too. After all, she wasn't entirely dry like the land dwellers usually were.

He squirmed a bit closer. "Do you go in the water often?" He asked in a bright tone, seemingly oblivious to how close he was to beaching himself completely. If she went in the water, maybe they could swim together!

Tail flicking nervously as Nayeli listened, she tried to calm herself enough to start talking. This was a grand opportunity and she had no desire to lose it because she'd turned into a shy and meek little girl. She wouldn't be able to live with herself if he left because she was boring.

"We can," She answered, tail flicking again as she made a move as if to step forward, but apparently her body wasn't about to listen just yet, "It's fun, actually, most all of us can swim." She tossed her head in a jerky motion to clear her eyes of her unruly curls--which of course did little to help. "At least most of the ones I've met. We usually don't go so far as to come out to the sea though."

"Well, I do go into it when I can," Her gaze flicked over his form and she tentatively took a step forward, a bit concerned as to how much he was coming out of the water. She knew from previous experience that if they were out of the water too much and too long things got bad for them.

"Are you sure you should be coming closer?" She asked, just in case he wasn't aware of his current beaching of himself. It may be a foolish question, but it couldn't hurt to be concerned and ask.

Castellan paused, and turned his head to regard the slight waves lapping against his sides with almost a curious expression. "I don't think I can get any closer than this, your air makes me feel heavy. I can get back into the deeper water if I wanted to though."

He wiggled a bit to no avail, thrashed his tail around slightly, scrambled to push himself backwards with his front legs, and after much effort he eventually slid back into deeper water where his body was allowed some more natural movement.

His smile returned, and he crawled right back up to where he had been before, his body glistening with fresh moisture from his not-so-quick demonstration. The poor thing never learned. "See? I can go back if I want to."

The mer's tail swayed, giving him the appearance of a sea serpent as it gently broke the surface of the water. "Are you going to swim tonight? I've never seen anyone with four legs swim, I can't even imagine how you would get anywhere without any fins."
