Sifiso liked the night more than the day, in some ways. It was true, his vision was diminished in the dark, but when the moon was full and painted everything black and white, when it was cool and the autumn sounds filtered through, it was soothing.

He wasn't nocturnal by any means, but he did prefer to bask in the rays of the moon. Currently, the Kylan was stretched out on his side in a clearing, tail twitching lazily and painted silver with moonlight. Autumn was coming, and the sun was setting earlier and earlier. He yawned, though not from weariness, and lifted his head to look at the stars. They were pretty, much prettier than the clouds of the day.

Esmi had always loved to walk by moon- and starlight, for as long as he could remember. He would walk, often forgetting to watch where he was going, and so ending up tripping over roots or into streams. This night was no different, except that ot was not a root he tripped over nor a stream he fell into, but another Kylan!
"Oh, my, I'm so sorry!" He hastily apologized, his moon-dreams scattered to the four winds in an instant as he was forced to concentrate on disentangling himself from the other Kylan. "I'm always so clumsy, I really should watch where I'm going."

Sifiso hadn't been listening for footsteps, and it was easy to imagine his reaction when there was suddenly something warm and furry and on top of him.

His gut reaction was fear and aggression. Ears pinned to his skull, he opened his mouth and hissed at whatever had pounced on him. Cocking his head on his long neck, he prepared, snakelike, to strike at his assailant.

Until he realized that he hadn't been pounced on, but rather tripped over. Swallowing his hiss with an undignified little squeak, Sifiso tilted his head and rolled away from the newcomer to better investigate it. A Kylan, male, probably blue, though colours were hard to tell in the darkness. Older than Sifiso. Apologizing. As he well should. Sifiso sniffed and nodded, standing up and shaking leaves out of his fur.

"No offense taken, and no harm done," he said pleasantly, flicking his ear and tail and inspecting a paw to make sure that everything was in working order.

He felt like he should say something more. The silence got awkward. "It's a lovely evening," he offered, never good at small talk.

The speech and mannerisms of the young male were more than a little disdainful, and Esmi had to keep himself from laughing at putting on of such airs after such an undignified squeak. He decided to have some fun with the little imp, maybe teach him a lesson in the process.
"It is, isn't it." That was sincere. "Are you sure you're all right?" He started looking the other over, pretending to look for injuries while making sure to get in his personal space and be irritating without actually doing anything wrong.

Oh, sweet irony. Sifiso wasn't even putting on airs. It was just how he was. But, that said, anyone who just is like that deserved every moment of bizarreness that other people could throw their way. Sifiso blinked a few times when Esmi invaded his bubble, putting his ears back a little bit and shifting uncomfortably.

"I'm fine," he said awkwardly, shuffling away a bit and sitting down so he could rear up on his hindquarters. "No, really. No harm done."

He flicked his ears and tilted his head, regarding Esmi curiously while still trying to edge away from him. He didn't even know who this Kylan was, and here he was in his face, investigating him in a somewhat awkward way.

Esmi was having a very hard time indeed refraining from laughing. The expression on the other Kylan's face was just so cute.
After a bit more investigating (staying away from anywhere too personal, of course), he proclaimed the other male uninjured.
"Well good. You seem to be alright after all." He gave him his biggest, most innocent, goofiest grin, the bright moonlight shining off his wide, guileless eyes.

When Esmi finally gave up his inspection, Sifiso wasn't so rude as to give a relieved sigh, but he thought about it. His ears flicked forward again, and he sank back onto all fours and then stood up.

He couldn't help but return the other Kylan's smile, though he wasn't sure exactly why Esmi was so pleased at him. To be honest, the older male confused him a lot, and it made him just the tiniest bit bewildered and uncomfortable.

"We've never met before," he said after a moment, trying to figure out how to open some sort of introduction. "I go by Sifiso." He stretched luxuriantly, arching his tail over his back and yawning.

Esmi's smile turned more sincere in response to the other's. Maybe he wasn't completely irrideamable.
"I'm Esmi. Pleasure to meetcha. You stargaze often?"

"The pleasure's all mine." He flashed a smile and glanced at the sky. The stars were bright tonight, something he noticed about autumn. Stars always glowed more sharply in the fall.

"Almost every night," he answered honestly. "I don't do so well in the daytime." He smiled sheepishly. "Things get quieter when the sun goes down. And you?" he asked, curling his lips in another bright smile and tilting his head, almost playful. He was young, and curious. Nosy, perhaps.

Esmi also glanced at the stars. "They are so beautiful. I've always been a bit nocturnal by inclination, but not many others are. Watching the stars, the moon, and the clouds has always helped calm me, put things in proportion when I feel down. Just listen to me rambling... I'm sorry if I bored you. Another thing I've always done is talk too much." He gave a self-deprecating grin.

Sifiso had been listening with one ear as Esmi talked, lulled halfway to sleep by his voice. It wasn't that he was bored or attention defecit, but he was young and by no means good at listening. He tended, not to tune out, but to miss the words and sense of the sentence.

"...yes," he said when he realized what he had done. "...wait, what?" He put his ears back sheepishly.

"That's all right," he said genuinely, smiling. "I talk all the time.

He chuckled a bit at the young Kylan's response. Well, it was more of a giggle, but he refused to admit that. He did many things, but he DID NOT giggle.

Talking is nice. But sometimes one needs quiet, and the night is a plentiful provider of that.

"This is true."

The young Kylan nodded and tilted his head skywards, ears flicking this way and that with each sound that came and went. Eventually, he tilted his head to one side, looked at Esmi, and yipped with a smile. "Do you have family, Esmi?" he blurted, eyes shining with genuine curiosity and ears flicking forward immediately.

Then he paused, put his ears back, and ducked his head. "Forgive me if I'm being forward or nosy; such was not my intent." But he couldn't stop that bright smile in his eyes and his waving tail. He was a genuinely cheerful fellow; nothing could stop that.

Esmi thought about the young male's question. "Do I have a family... Well, I suppose I might somewhere. I never knew them though. I've raised myself since as far back as I can remember. Everything before that is blank, I don't really remember when I was very small, not even the little hints of a ghost of a memory that most people have. So I don't know what happened." He gave a lopsided grin, with what might have been just a touch of sadness. "It used to bother me, but I've learned not to worry about it."

Sifiso bobbed his head in agreement; much of what Esmi had said was the same as his own situation. He vaguely remembered having a family, but...

"I must have left when I was very small," he said, not entirely listening to Esmi anymore and lost in his own thoughts, eyes fixed on the sky. "I don't really remember my family."

"So we have that in common, even if you are an old man and I'm a young fellow," he said brightly, leaning in and nipping the tip of Esmi's tail, eyes flashing laughter and mouth gaping open in a goofy grin. It was obvious he meant nothing by the words, and that he was eager to clinch the friendship that he felt developing—or perhaps just hoped was developing. Who knew how Esmi would react to the playful teasing and n**? He hoped he’d take it well, and put his ears back expectantly, tail waving.
