((Parallel to Terrice Estates))

In the dragon world, there was much excitement and a fair amount of confusion. They had just succeeded in bringing a full-grown dragon to the human world, and many conversations were filled with desires of certain dragons to go over there. There, they could protect their bonded better, and of course, see new things and eat new delicacies.

Yet their excitement did not keep the human world from spinning as it always did, and Auri's dragon was suddenly distracted by her bonded. She wasn't really supposed to talk to her other half, but in a crises like this, and probably having the skills to at least talk at this age, it would be tempting not to. She had known other dragons that had done as much, and their humans had survived. Yet many of the dragons her age had been taken to the human world already.

Iskvaeri's aid had really made the difference for Auri, but in the dragon world, Auri hampered Iskvaeri. The dragon had probably had to hide to avoid the distractions of other dragons wishing to play, so that she could concentrate on her bonded. Older dragons, dragons with training, could speak with their bonded and still communicate to those around them, but the task would be difficult for a young one.

There was one dragon, Sekius'talen, who took an interest in Isk's strange behavior. Sekius was an older female, a copper who enjoyed showing the younger dragons how to trick each other, either with magic or without. She got along very well with the younger dragons, but would not speak to them about her bonded, or why she didn't talk to many of the older dragons.

Thus is was that she noticed Isk seemed to be in a crises, and sought her out. Young one, she greeted, is it your bonded? Can you hear me?

Iskvaeri looked up at Sekius'talen, her eyes clouded with pain. She nodded slightly. Pain . . . raw pain . . . too much . . . I must help . . . I don't know how . . . something wrong . . .

Isk wasn't sure what was happening with her bonded, though she didn't know why. Isk suspected it was because they were both still too young. Of course, she had missed the fact that her bonded didn't really know what was happening either. But Isk could feel Auri's pain and desperation. She knew her bonded was weak and near death, and it scared Isk.

But there was nothing Isk could think of to do that would help her bonded. Help me? please.

Sekuis'talen cocked her head, nudging the younger dragon in the shoulder. Her sense of smell hinted at the distress that Isk was in, and Isk's response did little to clarify. It was safe to suppose that something was happening with the bond, but not much more.

There is no pain. You are sleepy, she murmured into her head, at the same trilling from deep in her throat. Sekuis' talent was the talent of charisma and suggestion, and just as humans are sometimes hypnotizable even through great pain, dragons can also tap into a great ability to ignore physical sensations. The greatest danger for Isk right now was her panic, which Sekuis hoped to take care of this way.

The next immediate danger was that, if the human died, so would Isk. But since Isk was no use for giving information to Sekuis, Sekuis would have to figure that out on her own. Even though she spoke so little to the older dragons, she still knew who was who, and could probably find a healer quickly. She didn't see any wounds appearing on the young dragon, though, and suspected that the pain was not the kind that could be healed.

If she could get Isk to calm down and block the pain, she might not need to bring the young dragon entirely into sleep.

Blinking a few times, feeling the numbness that comes with sleep, Isk is able to detach slightly from the pain as her thoughts begin to drift. The edge of fear that came with the sensations through her bond fades and Isk is able to distance herself from the pain. She wonder if she could shield herself from her bonded, but doesn't follow the thought, knowing it would leave her bonded alone and may cause her death or mental collapse.

Blinking once more, Isk looks up at Sekuis'talen again. Something is wrong with my bonded. She feels pain that is not hers. Pain and death. Much of it. She cannot stop it.

Sekuis seemed strangely unperturbed. Is she not now feeling the affects of your calm? There is little else you can do for your bonded....from here. A sharp grin accented the last two words of thought-speech. You are too young to exchange places with her, without causing damage. But there is a way to get you over to her world, where your wings could take you to her side.

The older dragon's talk was smooth, and at first glance, perfectly reasonable. It was many young dragon's unquenchable desire to visit the human world, and it was nearly every dragon's desire to come face-to-face with their bonded. Furthermore, Isk was in a more vulnerable state of mind, open to suggestion. How badly do you want to help your human, Iskvaeri? What risk are you willing to take?

Strangely pragmatic for her age, Isk had never asked to make the trip. While she thought it might prove to be a good thing, she didn't mind waiting, proving the viability with those who were too anxious, Isk realized as Sekuis spoke that perhaps it was her only option.

Aware her calm came too late for her bonded, that somehow the emotions Auri had been inundated with were now being spewed back out to all in the area around her, Isk was also aware that if things didn't change, Auri might not survive, and Isk would perish with her bonded.

But the stress of a crossing is said to be hard on both sides of the bond. And Isk had no way to warn Auri what was happening. With her bonded in this state, a crossing might be too much for her. But if Isk couldn't find her bonded and give her aid, Auri may well die anyway.

Her mind chasing itself in circles, Isk knew there was no good answer. And the need to be there, to help, to keep her bonded from suffering was great. Perhaps that is what tipped the balance. It surely wasn't the promise of seeing the human world, Isk didn't mind waiting to get what she wanted how she wanted it. And it wasn't because she wanted to meet her bonded, she could wait until after they had spoken at least. But if Auri wouldn't survive without Isk, how could Isk not go to her.

Were she able to do so without harming Auri, Isk would have already exchanged places with her bonded. After all, if Auri wasn't where this pain was, she couldn't be hurt by it. But that could not happen. So instead, Isk would have to go to Auri.

It didn't take as long to think all this as one might expect. Perhaps she would appear brash and quick to action, but Isk could think of no other way around this problem. Looking up at the older dragon, Sekuis'talen I would take the risk to save my bonded. Would you help me?

Sekuis grinned, quite pleased with the outcome of their discussion. Easily, she promised, her tail slithering back and forth behind her. It takes little effort from yourself, except that you not resist. Grab unto me as my human and I switch places. Your mass will not add too much strain because I am so big, and you so small. As she spoke, it was half command and half soothing song, still working her magic on the otherwise stressed Isk.

Once in the human world, you can travel with my human, for she is already going there and desires extra company. Sekuis said extra, because two other dragons and a boy were traveling with her bonded. Yet Sekuis was quite radical and desired that every dragon inhabit the same world as their bonded, precisely for this reason, so that they might better aid them in trouble.

Isk blinked and shook her head slightly, as if trying to resist the subtle magic. But her own logic worked against her, for she could find no way to avoid doing as Sekuis suggested.

And so Iskvaeri reached out to carefully grab onto Sekuis'talen, careful of the older dragon's wings. While tough, it was the easiest part of a dragon to damage and quite painful if pierced.

With patient confidence, Isk nods her readiness.

Then Isk reels as her bonded is again assaulted, but now by something more, alien and strange. Clinging more tightly to the older dragon, she fears what this might mean but is more determined than ever to make the crossing.

Suddenly the waves of emotion a blunted, her bonded no longer assaulted, though some of Auri's own fear now drifts through the bond. Isk doesn't know what is happening, but it is time she was there, helping her human. "Let's go." She prompts Sekuis, knowing the older dragon has a reason for wanting her to journey across like this, but not able to care at the moment. Her bonded needed her, she had determined to go. That was enough for Isk, the delay now only set her on edge.

The older dragon glared at her, her own perception of time being a bit different from the younger dragon, seen from the wisdom of many years. She did not openly reprimand Isk, however, and was in the next moment closing her eyes in a sign of concentration.

Isk had never undergone a switch before, and so had no personal reference as to the success of this one. First, she was flooded with a momentary mental projection from Sekuis, who was undergoing the brief mental submersion common with switching. For a moment, Sekuis and her bonded were one; Isk caught a brief glimpse of, but was not part of it herself. Perhaps it was because she was not engulfed in the mental exchange that Isk was able to sense the sudden bombardment of changing lights, colors, pressures, and even brief phantom pains. It was as if, not having any thing to sense for the moment, her nerves made up whatever they felt like. Her muscles seemed to tense of their own accord.

When the world settled, they were atop a snowy mountain top, with human tracks leading from a cave to where they now sat. Careful, Sekuis said with a hint of delight in her voice. Isk was near the edge of a cliff.

Isk took a moment to get her bearings and balance before carefully letting go of Sekuis and taking a step away. Reaching out to her bond to feel for Auri, Isk wanted to assure herself that her bonded was undamaged from the shift and still aware. The impression she got back from the girl confused her. It was an image of a gold dragon, and very clear words, I am trying to save your life, please cease resistance.

Taken aback for a moment, Isk looked at Sekuis askance. Who is with my Bonded?

But without waiting for a response from the older dragon, Isk sent comforting thoughts to Auri, thoughts that encouraged her to trust the unknown dragon.

Sekuis snorted in a sort of dragon shrug. Like I would know, she responded flippantly, acting for a moment more like a young dragon than an aged one. Isk could tell by the look in her eye and the twitch of her tail that she was very happy to be here, like one coming home after a long trip.

I smell other dragons, she commented idly, but with a hint of jealousy. Go greet them, would you? The smell, as well as that of a young human boy, was coming from the cave. I must orient myself if I am to give you directions. Neither dragon could know that Isk's bonded was actually coming more or less towards them.

[[If Roka doesn't post for his character soon, we'll just have him not be there for some reason]].

Isk looked around, also smelling the other dragons. Resettling her wings on her back and letting her tail snake out behind her, she moves towards the scent. Her mind giving friendly salutations, Greetings unknown kin, I am Iskvaeri.

The smell was new, but no one was there.

Sekuis didn't follow her, instead commenting. My human says that she has sent the two on a useless errand to distract them. They would have tried to stop us from bringing you. Isk had never before had any reason to doubt Sekuis' ability to reason, yet she had just said that her human had sent away a friend.

She didn't have much time to think about it though, since that is when her human called to her. At the same time, Sekuis was saying, I suppose you should find your human, and bring her here. Is she close by?
