Cold red orbs floated among masses of scars and swollen healing flesh, the only thing determining the grotesque sight to be a lioness was a tail with less than what was normal tufts of hair and paws that were virtually unharmed, if not dirty. The lioness was Sumu, slave to one of the oh so great firekins, she'd had her spirit virtually beaten out of her and still inwardly she fought against that title, she belonged to no one but the sky and the earth.

Trotting amongst the sands Sumu kept her head down and made sure that she bowed as well as showed respect to any firekin she passed, she was on an errand for her master, that was all. Was Ny, really her master? Possibly to her physical form, but in her mind Sumu knew that she'll always be free, free to run. The sun was slowly setting and although Sumu had little respect for those that owned her she knew that the heat of the sun was something they cherished, well times up boys, cold nights coming, she thought harshly. The coolness of night felt great on her aching muscles, but first one last errand before the God sent cold of night.

They’re all bigger than me, that’s the only reason I stay, she reassured herself. The full grown lioness was barely the size of the average adolescent rogue female, and thus she was easily dominated by those around her. She had yet to meet any other slaves, and if she did she would surely be smaller than them and could probably be roped into doing their bidding as well. Sumu made a soft grunting noise and continued on her way.

Savitri stared into the one watering hole, literally glaring at her reflection. Compared to her sisters... She was a freak. She looked more like one of the slaves than like a Firekin. Not a single marking graced her white pelt, no streaks danced through her white tail. The only thing to really stand out was her black nose and blue eyes. The little white Firekin stood up, smacking sand into the water to disturb the reflection. She let out a huff, stalking away slowly. When she saw Sumu, she just assumed, due to her pelt, that she was another Firekin.

Sumu never thought anything different in the little white firekin, it was better to assume others were firekin and there for worthy of her respect, she bowed deeply to the young cub her head nearly touching the sands.

"Good day, good master," she mummbled quietly. Ny had white, and her children as well, this little cub was probably another great lion, she seemed bigger than most children Sumu had seen in the past, "The Great sun shine on you, and what not."

She thought it impossible for anyone to mistake her for a true firekin she was too small and she had the mark of a slave on her rump, but of course it was hard to see such things in the dim light.

The white cub stopped, eyeing the slave curiously. "Master...? You're not of the Blood?" Blue eyes narrowing a bit, she frowned deeply. It was then that she noticed the mark on the lioness' rump, declaring her to be a slave. "Oh... Stop bowing to me..." She let out a bit of a grunt, glaring off into the sunset. "I don't deserve bowing... Finar-si cursed me with a blank pelt..."

"Blank pelt or not, you are one of them, the Masters," Sumu murmured back to her and half heartily straightened out her form but her gaze was still averted she felt humiliated by bowing and more so that this master thought herself to be less than the others, she did not look any different, save she had a pelt that was a lovely white. Sumu could not help but think about the time it would take to keep that pelt clean, the constant washing and staying out of the wind to keep herself from turning the color of the sand.

"Who is Finar-si?" she asked her curiousity getting the better of her. It was wrong to ask such a question out right, would this Fireki punish her for her curiousity, she silently hoped not, how would she explain more scars to her primary master?

The cub sat down, tilting her head. "Finar-si is the goddess who created us. The story teller's told about her before - She has a red pelt like blood, and magnificent wings..." Savitri sighed, looking at the sand. "I still don't think you should be calling me a master..." In fact, it seemed she didn't even want Radi calling her little master, even though the former Pridelander was her mother's slave.

Sumu could not hold her sharp tongue for very long, possibly the reason that she was getting scareed up quite badly, not from her great Ny, who did punish her but from others as well, and without thinking the lioness quipped, "Yes, another one of your pride's rediculous beliefs is there nothing that just /is/? Everything has folklore...horrible way to raise children fearing stories and believing lies." She almost chuckled and then the realization set in that even though this girl did not want Sumu to call her master it was possible thatthe cub could tell others of what she has said.

"I'll not call you master, little big one, but understand that I'll do as you wish, in hopes you wouldn't tell a soul I've spoken, and in hopes that you'll treat me kindly..perhaps..I can introduce you to others kids your age?"

The cub flicked her tail, glaring just a tad at Sumu. "Not everything is lies, you know. Some things have a grain of truth SOMEWHERE. Father's told me about the Pridelanders believing the stars are kings, maybe that has truth to it. Don't dismiss everything we believe to be a lie so easily." Her tail cured as she thought, glancing out over the dunes again. After a moment, she returned her gaze to the lioness. "How about this... You tell me about the world out there, beyond the dunes... And I won't tell anybody you spoke against Finar-si." It was a pretty good exchange, in her mind. Knowledge was a huge thing for one so small and young, and the secret could mean the difference between peace and pain for a slave.

"Truth is only what you see, never believe a story, stories are what mothers and fathers tell sons and daughters to keep them at bay, so they wont grow to full potention," she paused thinking, "Out there? Well...the world is larger, and the area I am from has water everywhere people are not harsh..some indeed keep slaves but most..most are free, free to do as they please when they please. I miss the smell of the wet air, with these wounds of coure it would be miserable, but the wet air is something to truly live for."

Sumu was generally a more calculating creature, not talking much and listening more. But, this was one of the masters' young and maybe..just maybe she could reach out to the child and explain that this world was much better than the harsh sands and the torment of outsiders.

"Truth is in the eye of the beholder." She tilted her head, looking towards the dunes again. After a moment, her blue gaze returned to the slave. "More water than here... Do the plants grow bigger than the few busehs that grow here?" Her interest was piqued, and the idea had been planted. Was it better out there? Was there more prey, too, to hunt for? It filled her with wonder, and the little ghostly cub's tail curled as she pondered this. She needed to talk to others.

She snorted at the thought of a mere cub being so intelligent, and nearly laughed out loud, instead she went to work at answering the cubs inquiry instead.

"My dear, the world beyong here has trees so big that two lions standing head to tail cannot wrap around them, and so tall that at times you cannot see the tops," her voice had changed to a husky wisful one, "The water that goes forever..now that is a thing to see, it never ends..never ends." she repeated for good measure.

She shifted uncomfortably in the head her scabs and healing flesh itching unbarably in this heat. She longed for the water and it's cooling affects, even if the water was not deep she would be able to stifle the itching within her flesh with it's cool properties.

Her mind filled with the idea of trees and flowing water and endless wonder. Water that never ended.... "I think I want to see that one day..." It'd be... It'd be wonderful, it'd be amazing, it'd be... So many things. She smiled a bit, looking very little like the Firekin she was. Her tail flicked before she got up. "You should go find another slave to try and help those... They look really bad."

Sumu clucked her tongue in disapointment, she understood the need to travel, but she also saw in her masters the need for one another, they captured outsiders, there for they must want to be around one another? They cherished each other did they not? She thought of her master Ny, and the loving way she cared for her children..this..this seemed different.

Sumu started to pace wearily wanting to be free of this little one's side but she did not desire asking for permission to leave. She would wait, this little one with the soft pale fur needed to learn her place, Sumu was sure that was neccessary for it's existance, if she did not learn she might end up like Sumu herself.

"Once I am finished here, I will tend to my wounds, I am on a little errand for my master."

Savitri let out a sigh, nodding. "Alright... Though I hope whoever's beating you like that should know that even slaves need time to recover... There's no point in beating them into dying if you want to keep them." She flicked an ear heading for home. Pausing, the white cub let out a little laugh. "I guess if I ever have a slave... I'll treat it nicely... Good treatment should make a good slave, shouldn't it?"

Sumu was baffled at the young one's intelligence, but then again the firekin were a strange race and that meant they probably wanted to teach their young quickly..or they were just ungodly smart. Her master's young were smart, the ones she had met anyway but they were not as young as this one.

"May there be a day when none of you get slaves," she grummbled under her breath irritably, "Treat us all well, or one day your people will regret it," she murmured louder so that Savitri could hear her.
