First impressions are often the longest lasting impression, right? After all if a person doesn't like something, rarely will they give it a second chance, and if they do, they are strictly biased on it. With this said, I feel like the impression that I want this guild to leave on the newcomers to be something of what this guild is all about. What is that exactly? The fact that this guild is dependent on everyone, not one person is really the true stronghold on it. Sure one person might help out more on one thing than another, but there's always some collaboration. Take the word of the day for example, it is held by a few people.

So what I want is for the front page to be done by you, yes all of you. I am holding a contest, the contest ends, get ready for it, October 29th, that's 13 days from not (not including today).

Now the fun part, what can you do for the front page? (I am talking about the front page that shows the L.O.L soldiers and my description of the guild underneath) Well it is simple, just create a welcoming to the guild description, you can be crazy, serious, inspirational or whatever you want! Write as a story? Sure go ahead, write it as just a introduction? Go ahead, heck even write it as a dear new member letter for all I care, just write from your heart ^_^. Oh and just have it pertain to the guild, and its meaning. What do we stand for? Being together as a group who helps each other, what else? To strive to a great potential, and what else? To just have fun! You can pick all three or just focus on one of them and mutter the last two hahaha, yes do it whatever way you want it to be done! And get this, you can even have your own picture attached on to it in replace of mine, or you can keep mine on it haha.

So want to join? Fantastic! Now if you're unsure how yours is going, just pm me with what you have and I can help you out on it, don't think for a minute that helping out will affect your ranking on being graded, I'll just give you a few pointers, more or less my opinion. Not only is open for everyone who wants the help, but if you do take the help, you'll be doing all the work so it isn't like I really am helping haha. Anyways the reason I am leaving it open to seek help is because (as one of the things behind the guild) we're all about improving ^_^.

The final part to this is that I really do want to show all of you guys off and just show how this guild really is about the people. So yes have fun doing it, and don't think your work will go unnoticed.

I am going to give out a prize to two people. The two that win will have theirs displayed on the front page the longest, and get a sealed letter. For the others who don't win, no frets, yours will still be displayed ^_^, take pride in honor that I want to see your work on the front page!

Take care everyone, and let the contest begin!

Surrounded by fellow warriors, you and your colleagues stand alone, ready to fight yet another army of infantrymen, armed with guns and weapons of all sorts. You and your men, have nothing but armor and piercing weapons..limited by so much knowledge. Silence seems to be your biggest virtue.. and even that.. doesn't last long. For above the rising sun, above even the horizon, comes the smell and sound, of death. Silently, you pray to your god, you pray to your beliefs that you will live.. but faintly, a shadow of a doubt begins to take control, as you quickly begin to succumb to it's overwhelming power. Ultimately, you become afraid of the path that lies ahead of you. The path that has been laid before you was your own choice, you begin to hear screams.. coming from your own men.. as these metal projectiles rip through their armor. Slowly, you realize that fear.. has taken total control. Your knees buckle, as your body falls to the ground, you wince as your knees hit the ground harshly. You know that physically.. you're done for. This was never a battle that you could win.. it's hopeless. But you start to look around, as your comrades continue fighting for what they believe in. You want to scream at the top of your lungs, to wake up in bed.. next to your loved one..

The sound of another body, and those horrible metal firing weapons brings your daydream to an abrupt end. Your best friend has fallen, staring you into your very soul. You see his mouth moving a whole two seconds before his words reach your ears. "Never forget what we are fighting for.." Then, his last breath is issued, right before your very eyes. Time slows to a screeching halt, as you remember his harsh words.. What exactly were you fighting for? You struggle to remember...Then it hits you, as you reach to your hind pocket and pull out an old scrapped book. Literacy.. understanding.. truth, all of these equal traits, that you and your men were never allowed to have, because of your status in society. You raise your hand to clutch your chest, where you heart lies.. feeling a sharp pain of agony. Your friends are dying.. you have lost everything, and now.. for some reason.. you can see these monsters killing your family..A piece of cloth rises in the air, as you snatch it and tie it around your head. Your mind has become set on one thing, you are going to make them pay. It seems the last survivors of your men have thought the same, because they stand at your side, with confident grasps of reality written upon their faces. You turn your head, and drop your book, as the others follow suit you swear to use what you have illegally read, in hopes of turning the tables.. not only for life, but for humanity as well. It seems the gods are in your favor, because the metal projectiles you were previously forbidden to speak of, Guns.. The Guns, have all been dropped to the ground, and now the enemy soldiers are holding swords and spears. Luck.. has turned. You and your men roar in confidence, as you are the last survivors of the resistance. Bloody and beaten, you rush forward, with a newfound confidence, and the power and will.. of a god. The images of your children, of your spouse, rush through your head... as it becomes clear.. that you will fight for love.

The sky turns black, and a torrential downpour of rain ensues. This is trivial.. nothing to worry about.. until lightning rips through the sky like a madman with a target. Flashes blind your enemy as you and your small battalion of men rise to the challenge, like noble heroes. You begin to let the books and the knowledge that you have acquired, seep into your brain, and your fighting becomes unrivaled. You've made the stand, and have appealed to the gods. They will handle the rest.

This legacy holds true to everything. We must all make a stand like the soldiers in this written excerpt. They fought for their right to read, write, and be equal. Legend has it, that they won.. the last of a mighty army.. rose to defeat the enemy.. in unthinkable odds. They started a group, which has been written in stone by the very lightning of the gods. Now, that this has been passed down, we as the descendants of these mighty brave heroes, must uphold the very thing that they started.. Which has been officially titled as the
LEGION OF LITERATES!

Welcome to the Legion of Literates. Many if not all of us in this guild are literate, because we hold no fear to learning. Learning more and more, from books, teachers, mentors, and yes, even youngsters. We pick up helpful hints and lectures wherever we can. We love new blood, as new people always hold something new to learn from each other. So please, join this guild with the passion and determination of the heroes of this small scene, and welcome yourselves into a wonderful nation.

We ask for simple things, and one of those things is a small excerpt of your skills. AS stated before we love everyone, and everyone is equal. From the most literate to those who have yet to learn the wonderous talents of literacy. We help and orchestrate proper literacy within the english language. So all we ask if you wish to join this magnificent wonder, is a small show if you will of your talents. When you request to join, please enclose a good paragraph or more, as a sample of your abilities. There is however another catch. When you join, you must remain at least semi active, as we wish for this guild to partake amongst the most active of guilds on Gaia. We also wish to grow... that being said.. If you find that the character limit of 2000, is too restricting then send it to any of the guild moderators as I'm sure they will love to read it and monitor the decision of your request to join.

Thank you for reading, and please if you've any questions, seek out any of the guild members, as they will be only more than happy to answer any questions or concernts you have. *bows* Domo Arigato ^.^

So yeah.. this is my submission... I hope you like.

As the large marble doors shut behind you, you jump and take a few steps forward. The sound of your shoes on the obsidian floors echoes endlessly, and you shiver, despite the warmth of the room. A single blinding light shines in the center of the room. The contrast hurts your eyes, and you shield them, but still, you continue forward. After what seems like forever, you reach the center of the room, the light even brighter as you stand under it, and it shines down on a blank open book. The pages seem old, though, and the corners crumble at your touch.

You're confused. You were called here in an urgent letter, saying you were destined to join a group that was meant to save the world from a time of despair. But yet, no one was here. Just an empty book in the middle of an almost empty room. You sigh, and turn to go, but stop short as the doors burst open, and a gust of icy wind bites at your face. You turn and gasp, the books of the page flying a mile an hour. But that's not all. As they flip, the pages fill to capacity. The font is small and script-like. Ancient. The sight amazes you, and your eyes widen.

Suddenly, everything stops. The pages land gently in place, open to a page in letter form. Your name appears at the top. You're stunned, but yet, so compelled to go on. You turn back to the book and begin to read.

"Dear___,
I understand you are confused, but you were indeed called here for a reason. We have seen your skills, and we believe you can help us save the world from the fate of eternal illiteracy. Our numbers are few, but our words are stronger than swords. We believe in the right of the word, and fight with all the knowledge we have to save it's precious name. You, my fellow Literate, are called to us from forces beyond our control.

We are the Legion of Literates. We have been around for centuries but we are only known to those who will fight for the arts of literature. You, we believe, are one of those people.

Join us...and discover the magic deep within.
"

The letter ends, with no name signed, and you are left breathless. So what will you do? Join, and fight for the life of literacy? Or turn and run, to hide in the shadows of one-liners and god-modding?

Fantastico! Thanks for putting it up enchanted! Nice way to step up onto the plate, both of you. It seems unfortunate that nobody has entered in the contest, with the permission of the current two contestants, I am going to extend it till at the very least Nov. 15th just so people can decide which prize they want.

However, doing good and going a step above and beyond does not go without rewards, both of you will be receiving something special via giftbox style. So I hope you guys enjoy ^_^. Note, I was going to send them out today but gaia is acting funky, tomorrow shall be the day!
PostPosted: Wed Oct 31, 2007 7:13 pm

I sent your pre gifts already, now lets see if we can get some more contestants in! For the grand prizes! ^_^

Oh I am going to be switching out between both of you for the front page, and my next post on here will be my old post, that way I know where it is so I don't have to save it to my computer when wanting to switch it out lol. No it is not an entry, and if it was, it wouldn't win compared to the likes of you two haha, no doubt it'd have a hard time meeting against any other competitors.

The old one
May it retire with greatness

User Image
A lighting bolt crashed against the earth creating a thunder that roared mightily, one that could vibrate trees to lose forth all of their foliage, but merely became a gentle lull to those brave hearts who stood at the forefront of literature, no, humanity.

You see, long ago when the first words of the tongue were written into the sands of time, brought forth warriors who used these words as their weapons and shields. Those who were illiterate became merely slaves to these new inherited words, while these brave warriors became masters who defied their own destinies of mortal men, by living forever through their words. As time passed, they slowly even became masters who could control the fate of men with not force, but through words and through stories that could sway the heart of any soul. Yet as all things, they did have a weakness, these men could only live on in a world of literacy, and now it seems that their reign has already started to fade away as our world slowly becomes corrupt and controlled by those who are illiterate.

Time has called forth yet again to sound the trumpet for new brave hearts who will fight forth for the sake of literature. If they fail, they will pass away like all mortal men, but if they succeed, they shall live forever as the Legion of Literates!

~So you want to join this legion? Well there are some requirements.
When you click on the join guild, please include a writing sample. It can be from a previous rp, or just creating up something original, like a story. (The join request has a cap of 2000 characters, if it is over that, I'll not only be thrilled but happy to read it, send it to me through pm ^_^)

Secondly, if you want to join, but not sure if your skills are up to snuff, still put up a writing sample, and tell me of your concern. We'll be having a school rp set up to help those who are wanting to improve their writing. In basic terms, I'll probably grant you 2 weeks trial period to improve your writing style. During that trial you're limited to the chatting in the forum, and the school rp. If you start showing improvement, I'll remove the "trial" membership, and you can join whatever rp you want to.

My reason for doing this is because I am hoping to get a good group of literate people, and have rps set up that no one has to compromise what they want to do.

Anyways have fun rp'ing!

"Come, friend! Don't fall behind! We are almost there!"
"There? Where?" you ask, your voice sliding along the walls with your shadows.
"You'll see..." he calls.

You continue, walking cautiously down the tunnel towards the unknowable end. Your friend begins to pull away from you, his steps eager. He bears the torch. Don't let him get away! You must not be left in the dark! Oh wait! He's slowed! The end of the passage... It's nigh! Hurry! You must see it as well!! Look! It is a door! Not a wooden door. Nor a metal one. Yes, yes! A stone one!

'Stone?' you wonder silently. Yes! Perfect for preservation of course! 'Preservation? Of what?'

Come! You mustn't turn from this moment! Shall you dare enter? You are certainly not alone! See? There on the floor at you and your friend's feet? Footprints in the dust and sand! And behind! Do you hear the whispers? Fear not!! They are followers and leaders just like you! Come! You must hurry!! Your friend, he is urging you to come to his side. Do it! Do it now! I promise you, you shall not regret your decision!

Look! He is opening the door. Oh! And examine the door more thoroughly! Do you see it? Do you see the writing? Read it! Read it! What does it say??

'Brothers and sisters, protectors of power, those who vow to use what lies beyond to its full potential.'

What say you now? Too late! The door is open! Your friend has entered and you are not far behind, not wanting to be left in the dark...

The torch enters the room with you. Your shadow dances with your friend's. Dances over the dusty spines, the newly marked skins! Nay! Do not look away! But look forever closer! See? What is to be feared but the power of words, both written... And spoken! Run your hands along those worn spines declaring to those who dare look what can be accomplished only by those bold enough, strong enough.

Wait! There is yet another thing to see! In the middle of the room, standing as a sentry before yet another door... A book! An open book! But this one is only partially full! You slowly approach as does your friend. With hands like feathers, you turn the pages back and there at the beginning you see a familiar name. And you glance at your companion. His name. Already in the book? A smile blooms upon his face in the wavering torchlight. And you realize the meaning.

You turn back to the page you had initially seen. A pen lies nearby.

Now the true question... Shall you, oh protector of power, sign your name? Sign your name and join the many others before you? Join...

The Legion of Literates!

Murr, I think my vote goes in for JealouslyZealous' front page, with ForeverEnchanted's as a close second. I like the theme of books rather than legions, and I love the picture Jealously chose. Very nicely done!
