It had always been Avalokiteshvara's habit to look brightly at life. Most unpleasant things could be made less unpleasant by having a good attitude about them. Kalonas, for instance. Draco had hardly been a gentleman but he had sired her foals and she had lived to tell the tale after the encounter. She couldn't complain about the son that he had left her, either. Hayagriva had been a joy to her, watching him learn and grow older... and grow up.
The ache that she felt whenever she thought of her son came back and no amount of thinking positively could make it go away. He was making his way in the world without her and she was immensely proud of him for doing it. But now... she was alone again. It was a state that usually didn't bother her, but now it made her feel... tired. She walked wearily through the forest and paused when she reached a small bubbling stream. Maybe a drink would refresh her.

<> Houndoom had been walking for a long time and now settled to the edge of the stream snoozing quietly. He did not notice anything as another soquilli came. His tail beside him and not tucked under like usual. He thought before he came that perhaps his tail would scare off other soquilli and not disturb him. He knew it was a selfish thought but was too tired too move his tail. Slowly then, he drifted off to sleep.

((Yeah... Ardin and Hayagriva are both Vara's kids but Ardin got separated from her as a basket... and Draco never bothered sticking around to see the kids...))
Vara had already lowered her head to drink when she noticed the other soquili nearby. She hadn't been terribly observant ever since she fell into a funk but this was downright embarrassing. She took her drink first and then raised her head again, putting on a smile and preparing to greet the reclining soquili. It was then that she noticed his closed eyes. Asleep? That wasn't all that she noticed. A black barbed tail lay beside him, a barbed tail on a wingless soquili, just like her Hayagriva.
Vara sucked in a quick breath. He might not be Hayagriva but he was enough like her son that she started feeling lonely all over again. Now what was she supposed to do? She didn't want to wake him but didn't just want to walk away. She shifted from hoof to hoof uncertainly, watching the sleeping stallion for a moment.

Houndooms ears pricked forward, the grass was being crushed... and just when he found a good spot to sleep for a "wake up snack" Houndoom, knowing himself, knew when he woke up he would be all loony and blur. The grass sounded once more, there was a soquilli present. Making absolutely no noise at all, he stood up to face the soquilli. It was a mare, uncertainty filled her eyes. He had seen that look before, when everyone thought he was a kalona and would attack. Responding like he always did ; he bowed down slowly to the colorful mare. "I am houndoom. I am not a kalona, so please; you need not be afraid. How may i help you on this a lovely morning? " He smiled gently at her and took two steps back distancing himself from her. From what he knew, she might just bolt when his words managed to sink in.

Uncertainty gave way to chagrin when she heard the introduction from Houndoom. He seemed to have mistaken her conflict over waking him as worry about his heritage. The poor thing. Did he have to add the disclaimer after his introduction often? She wondered whether Haya would have to do the same. It must be painful to be rejected on the basis of a tail, and horns in Houndoom's case. What could she do to put him more at ease? Telling him her name back was a start.
"My name is Avalokiteshvara, but most just call me Vara." She gave Houndoom one of her warmest smile. "I have a son that looks a lot like you and he is a darling. I know better than to judge a soquili by a few features."

Houndoom returned her smile happily. He was glad he managed to convince her he wasen't going to hurt her. "Avalokiteshvara, you have a lovely name..." He said with ease, back in his homeland his brothers and sisters had long complicated names too. She reminded him of his childhood.
"But since you insist, i shall call you vara. Where you here just for a drink of water?" He said looking pointedly at the clear stream water. "If you are," He said positioning himself to return to sleep, "please go ahead, i wish not to disturb you."
The grass now felt nice and cool after he had stood up while it aired. He shifted his body a little and smiled reassuringly at vara.

"Well, I did come here to drink," she admitted. "But it seems like I've found companionship for the moment, which I value much higher. It seems like we both could use the company." She hoped that spending even a little time in Houndoom's company would lessen her longing to see her son again. He was certainly serving to remind her that you could find pleasant soquili in the seeming most unlikely of places.
She chuckled. "But I'll take my drink first, if you don't mind."

Houndoom closed his eyes to relax, and chuckled throatily. "Sure sure, go ahead.." He said with a grin, "so vara, you value companionship higher... If i heard correct you had a son no? Well i give you my congrajulations. Was your mate a close friend which you spent time with? " Houndoom asked out of curiousity.
They needed something to talk about after all. Houndoom had seen a many mares but this mare was the first with SO much markings on her. He opened one eye and looked at her with interest.

Vara took her drink while listening to his reply. She held her head down for perhaps longer than was necessary for drinking but enough for composing her thoughts into a response. "No, myself and his father didn't know each other very well and he isn't around anymore." She didn't know if she even really missed him. She hadn't known him for long and wasn't certain if knowing him for longer would have even been a good thing.
"But that's that." She added a smile to it to try to soften her previous statement. The purpose of this conversation wasn't just mongering pity. It was companionship, as Houndoom had mentioned.
