The night was clear, with a bright moon hanging in a cloudless sky. Castellan had been racing through the silver waves with a gleeful grin since the sun had vanished, and he could have been mistaken for nothing but a big fish if he hadn't gotten it into his head to see how high out of the water he could leap. In the crisp moonlight his equine features would be obvious, particularly since his reckless frolicking had taken him dangerously close to the shoreline where he could be seen by any land dwellers who happened to approach the water's edge.

Settia walked along the waters edge and listened to the calming sounds of the night. It had been ages since she had gone out at night on her own. She had been so busy with her son and his son and then of course catching up with her mate. She also hadn't ventured off from the teepee much in the past few years and wondered if the rumors she had been hearing were true...that there were other Soquili in other forms that lived in the waters of the lakes, rivers and seas. As she walked, the poinsettia mare could hear distant splashing up ahead but didn't think much of it.

Castellan whinnied happily as he launched himself out of the water yet again. The brazen young stallion was starting to think he was getting good at this. If he swam real fast, he could almost get his entire long body out of the water before falling back beneath the surface. Unfortunately he wasn't very good at looking before he leapt, and the next time he fell back under the water he bonked his head against the shallow, sandy bottom.

"Owwww...." he whined, compulsively curling his tail around a rock next to him which he had unthinkingly missed by mere inches. Only now that he was still in the water did he notice how close to the shore he was, and how shallow the water had gotten.

Settia's ears perked as she thought she had heard a voice. The red mare looked about and couldn't see anything unusual about. She shrugged and continued to walk towards the waters edge. She was getting a bit thirsty and bent to take a drink, not noticing a very unusual Soquili in the water further up the shore line.

The mer stallion could hardly miss seeing the red mare. Although her mane was a very natural colour, much like that of elkhorn coral, he had never seen a deeper red on any tropical fish in his life. Surely the land held many wonders he would never truly understand. His curiosity would have gotten the better of him if he hadn't tethered himself to that rock with his tail, but he still swiveled around it to get a better look at the four legged mare.

The red mare still was unaware of the strange Soquili in the water who was watching her though she did have the strange feeling that someone was watching her. At this feeling the mare picked up her head and looked towards the forest behind, which was a natural instinct for her. It would never occur to one who lived on the land to look towards the water for danger.

A delighted grin slipped across the stallion's muzzle, and he uncurled himself while the red mare was looking away. He swam in as far as he could without any thought as to how his actions might appear to the land dweller. With his long, sinuous body curled in water shallow enough for her to wade out, he would be impossible to miss as he grinned and watched eagerly.

Settia shurgged her shoulders and turned back to get another drink. She practically jumped right out of her skin as she spotted a soquili wading in the water directly in front of her. She hadn't heard the stallion enter the water and wondered where he had come from and what he was doing out in the water. "Don't you know it's not polite to sneak up on others like that?" she said feeling a bit out of place.

Castellan's smile vanished, and he almost pouted a little. "I wasn't being that sneaky, I just wanted to swim closer. I've never seen a fish as red as you are." His tail wound aimlessly through the water, there was nothing for him to curl it around and it made him feel unpleasantly insecure in the gentle waves. "I didn't mean to startle you," he added, almost as an afterthought.

The red mare was quite puzzled at him calling her a fish. He was the same as her, as far as she could tell, so why would he call her a fish? This just didn't add up plus she had the funny feeling something was not right about the other Soquili, but she just couldn't figure out what it was. "I beg to differ, but I am not a fish. I don't have any fins or scales as far as I know of. I am just the same as you are." she said unknowing that she was infact not at all the same as him.

The mer's grin returned almost immediately. "Of course you're not a fish, your tail isn't right for it. It would be like me trying to swim with my mane!" He chuckled a bit at the thought. It was good that he had learned by now that the land soquili's tails were not their entire back end including the legs, but just the little bit of mane-like hair on their odd rumps. He had yet to figure out if they could swim at all.

The red mare cocked her head to the side not really getting the mer's point, as she still hadn't figured out that he was not a normal Soquili. "Now that would just be silly, swimming with your mane, though I don't understand what you mean my tail isn't right for it. What's wrong with my tail?" she asked curiously. Maybe it was the flowers or something in it that wouldn't be good by getting wet.

Castellan grinned and laughed happily. "It's not wrong, it's just different, and all... hairy." He laughed a bit more, letting his own sinuous tail rise above the water's surface for a minute as it made it's unusual winding motions. "Mine's got fins, which are good for moving. It's like a giant fan, and I don't think you could make a giant fan with your tail."

Settia looked shocked as what seemed to be the stallions tail come out of the water. He was right in that it was nothing like her own. She then realized that he wasn't like herself. She had never seen a creature like him before in all her life and had never heard of Soquili with fins who live in water. "What are you?" she said aloud while in her shocked state and then caught at the last minute what she had blerted out. How rude and stupid of her!

Castellan just grinned at her surprised expression, it didn't even occur to him to be offended by either the stare or her exclamation. "I'm a soquili, like you, I just live in the water instead. It's too bad though, all that dry land looks like a lot of fun to explore. I can only see the shorelines."
