 The brown stallion stood by the shore, watching the water lap lazily at the sand just in front of his hooves and feeling the breeze in his mane. Being alone was such an odd feeling, even his remaining daughter had grown a little distant the past while. There was probably a new stallion in her life, he just hoped that male would treat her well or there would be hell to pay.
His tail flicked idly and he sighed. Perhaps it was time to head home, Niyol might need him for something. The wind was getting cold, which meant the snows were coming again probably before anyone knew it.
Colonel lingered a moment or two longer by the water...

 The oceanside was becoming quite the common spot for Maui these days. She spent almost day in and day out enjoying the remaining warmth along the shores. Fall was coming quick and soon it would be too chilly for her to stand being so close to the water in the pre-winter winds. But in the meantime, she went splashing through the shallows of the ebbing waves and thinking to herself about many things.
She always loved reflecting on life and the world around her. It made for good peace of mind to practice such tranquility. However, splashing about was quickly making her legs numb---seemingly the water was pretty near its winter temperature already, spite how warm a day it was. Deciding it best to call it quits, she headed for a nearbye path leading up to the cliffs above. Thats when she noticed a brown coated stallion in the near distance.
Should she continue and leave the stranger to his solitute? she pondered. It wasn't in her nature. Expecially since the usual thoughts of "What if someone's broke his heart? Or he's upset about something" consumed the mare's mind. She was ever-caring, like a guardian angel to all; always concerned for other's well being; being that of body, mind, spirit or heart. So, the mare floofed her wings, turned hoof and headed for him, a cheery smile on her face.

Colonel turned just in time to see the white and warm colored mare approach. "Uhm...hello?" A hoof pawed the sand uneasily as he bowed his head in greeting. She was a stranger to him, but by her gait she seemed pleasant enough and she was a wind, like Wambli. From his experience winds were usually nice enough.
"What brings you out here, miss...?" He lacked a name or something to call her, so he settled for that for the time being.

Maui smiled serenely. "The usual, for me that is. I enjoy the scenery and wading about in the shallows" she replied, "I just happened to be on my way out and I noticed you in your solitute. I came over to check to see if you were okay." She wondered if he'd ever had someone say that before. Most who came to find she came over to say hi and make sure nothing was ailing them thought it a bit weird. Fliting her wings chipperly she introduced herself, "My name's Maui. I'd like to know your name too; if I'm my presence isn't bothering you that is."

"No, your not bothering me. I often come out here to be alone as well." The stallion offered a somewhat awkward smile. "I'm alright, mostly anyway...and...my name is Colonel." He managed to settle himself enough to stop pawing at the sand and embaressing himself more than he likely already had.

The 'mostly anyway' comment confused Maui. Was he not all okay? She decided it best not to pester further. His business was his business, not her's. If he wanted her to know what was up, she assumed he'd be willing to talk about it all on his own. She smiled broadly, in hopes to help lighten everything up evermore. "Nice to meet you Colonel. Thats one of the more unique names I've heard yet" she added. It was a compliment, but it could have been taken otherwise. Maui hoped though of coarse he'd understood she meant it in the most kindly manner possible.

"The lightskin two leggers gave me that name." Colonel seemed indifferent about it. "Maui is a beautiful name, unique too. It is very nice to meet you." He lowered in his head, in a gesture that would almost look like a bow.

Maui much liked how hunble the stallion was. She smiled. "Thank you!" Looking around she pondered how to make better conversation since it was however becoming a little awkward making such small talk. "Say, why don't we head for something to eat? Maybe when we find a nice place to graze, we can get to know each other" she suggested sweetly, hoping she wasn't being too upfront with someone she'd just met.
"I'm always up for conversation! Who knows we may find out we have things in common---and if we don't, it could lead to some good debating" she giggled; although not too childishly as she usually did.
