Oh, dear god, I don't feel alive...

Alright, before I begin this rant, a prelude: my mother is a sexist, hypocritical feminazi. And this particular argument with her was filled with so many sexist ad hominems, non sequiturs, and straw-man arguments that I could have easily regurgitated whatever fragments of my sanity that I have left.

So, one of my guyfriends is a DM in a D&D campaign, and he's been helping me get started playing. He and I wanted to get together this weekend so we could get some playing in. I posed the idea to my mom last week, and she didn't have a problem with it then, but we were busy, so we couldn't. This week, I tried again, and she started on a sexist rampage. She said no, and when I asked why, she said, "He might want to get into some extra-curricular activities besides Dungeons and Dragons, you know?"

Of course, my initial reaction was, "What the HELL is your problem?" She'd met him at a party over the summer and even said herself that she thought that he was a "nice kid" and that he has a "lovely family," so naturally her statement was completely self-contradictory. I pointed this out to her.

Her reaction? "You have to take things slowly, Becca!"

"Slowly"?! Hello, we've been trying to put my character together for WEEKS! Besides, all my friends think that the two of us would make a cute couple, and one of my catalyst friends has said to me, "You two are the slowest a** people on the planet!"

User Image
She's not even Christian (and neither am I), but she makes Jesus cry.

And after she could come up with no arguments about him, she started throwing ad hominems towards his family instead.

"What if his dad's a ***** if he is? That means he WOULDN'T want to screw me."
"You're under age of consent!"
"Point?"
"... What if his mom's a drunk?"

Alright, it's true that most ***** are men, but there are so few ***** out there that this really doesn't apply. I swear, it's like "innocent until proven guilty" is turning into "guilty until proven innocent," and common sense is now uncommon sense.

And it basically went in circles from this point forward. So, to my mother, I have these four words to say:

So, you're either with me, or you're with the enemy. Thoughts?

My parents (esp. mom) just can't see logic at times too, and probably a lot of other people's parents too. Of course they have life experience and authority over us, but when they're wrong they find it hard at admit it, or simply they just keep going about how right they are.

Because we all know how many Dungeons and Dragons players turn into rapists and serial killers after becoming drunk with power from their Satanic games (We all know D&D is a tool of the devil. Don't try to deny it you Satan-worshipper.). Besides, what if his dad is an ephebophiliac with a penchant for white fros? I'll bet his mum isn't only a drunkard, but also deals drugs to minors and grows 'Mary Jane' (Know what I mean, know what I mean, nudge nudge, nudge nudge.) in her basement!

If you couldn't detect the sarcasm, I'm with you on this one.

That actually reminds me of my mother's grasp of logic...*shudders*

I'm with you on this one.

Crazy moms... mine isn't necessarily crazy, though. She's often pretty cool, but she can be an airhead sometimes, and then it's easy to see where me and my sisters get it. You have my sympathies.

But for the record, a D&D DM has taken to hitting on me every time I'm in the room (I can't explain exactly why, it just makes me go "ick"), so they can get at least a little pervy... might be contributing to me not playing...

Later smile

Oh, dear god, I don't feel alive...

Thanks, Atrixa. I feel loved.

Kellia, are you serious? Well, I guess that's guys for you... just kidding. Still, that's just one DM, and this guy is one of my best friends, so I don't think he'd go to such lengths. (Not that I'd necessarily complain, depending on the specifics. ^.^ I'm such a hugwhore.)

Yup, totally serious... and my eighteen year old sister who does play would have complete and utter control of her group if mom wasn't there for her to differ to... all because of her cup size... so don't tell me D&D guys can't perv. It's really good that you've buddied up with such a good friend, though... probably useful to scare a few of the desperate nerds off.

Have fun... and I don't know where you are, but my mom and sister frequent conventions... it'd be interesting if they started running into people I've spoken to on Gaia... meh, but that's my weirdo brain. Have fun smile .

You've been for me what no other could be...

Yeah, but anyone's physically capable of being perv. He's still not that kind of guy, but whatever. Point still stands, my mom's a sexist paranoiac.

What about a person who was reduced to a vegetative state due to severe spinal cord injury and later put into a coma due to criminal negligence on the hospital's part and is now only continuing to live through the aide of an IV drip that funnels him essential nutrients?

You've been for me what no other could be...

Unless you're dead, the pervy thoughts are still a possibility. Everyone has them from time to time, so why does my mother really care? Hell, I'm the kind of person who randomly gives my guyfriends kisses on the cheek for no apparent reason, so my mom should be lashing out on me more than my friends who happen to be of the opposite sex, by her standards. (I'm a hugwhore. Leave me alone.)

Ah, maybe she's in denial about something. Might want to investigate it if you're bored/ran out of things to do, because she's clearly not willing to tell you the real reason why she objects to it.

Maybe she's had a bad experience in the past with Dungeons and Dragons?
PostPosted: Sun Feb 10, 2008 2:31 pm

I think she did, actually! Her first try at D&D, she got trapped in an endless hallway to nowhere, probably on the Ethereal Plane. ^.^ That's a rather illogical reason to despise it like that, but hey, it IS my mother.
