I usually take a long hot/warm bath with about a cup of lectic soda (can find in the laundry aisle usually). It's great for sore muscles and swollen joints.
But for swollen joints, fill up part of a long sock, wrap around the joint the secure with a bandage. Sleep with it on and in the morning it will have sucked out the excess fluid.
Otherwise, a good massage (which will hurt, but will pay off).
If all else failes, a long stretching sessoin after pushing your self to work out and et your body warm.

At the end of your training session, have a gentle stretch and cool down well. I found a gentle couple of mile walk helps out loads. Afterwards, try to keep moving. Dont just crash out. Have a long hot bath with lavender oil. I'm not usually one for hippy stuff but I have had very good results using lavender oil. Eat and hydrate well for the entire day. As Kasey said, a massage works wonders if you can find someone to apply it xD

two things one: hydrate before doing anything physical this helps to prevent the sore muscle from ever happening two: if you get sore it is due to lactic acid so eat things with high potassium like bananas or avocados it helps to neutralize the acid built up in the muscle tissue

i find that if my muscles are sore, more exercise helps. A nice gentle warm up and stretch, and then some exercise (not too intense) and a nice cool down and another good stretch helps, getting those muscles nice and warm and loose again feels good ^_^

The best solution is more of where it came from! xP. I always try and stretch and do a few cooling-down exercises after an intensive workout. My muscles normally get sore the second day as well. I find that if I sit around, it just gets worse. Soaking in a warm bath...massaging... all the stuff said above is quite relaxing and soothing^_^ helps a lot. For swelling... ice it.

Today, I threw a hard kick that got checked
My shin didn't hurt, but my entire calf did
And I'm thinking it's because of lack of Calf-strength in taking the impact
I use liniment. Make sure you hydrate alot - helps flush out lactic acid

Make sure you get enough protein too. I don't recommend protein shakes unless you're really training hard. Just make sure you get enough protein in your diet either way. Worst case scenario, Ibuprofen

Tea is also helpful because of Antioxidants
Over the summer, I was drinking Green Tea before practice because of the caffeine.
And after practice, I'd drink Rooibos tea, which is apparently good for recovery.

But if you drink caffeinated tea, make sure you also drink lots of water, because caffeine = prevents water absorption.
