Ecclesiastes 9:5-6
Quote: 5 For the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing; they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten. 6 Their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished; never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun. What does this mean?

What does this mean?
the meaning...just as the writer ("the teacher") says...everything is meaningless...part of this has to be understood through context. the person who wrote this was going through a time of great depression (the God's book for the emo smile ) he was concluding that everything we do while we are living is pointless b/c in the end when we die what we have done will amount to nothing in the grand scheme of things. so let's look at these verse in particular by them self as well...
vs 5
"for the living know that they will die, but the dead know nothing;" while we are still here in the living flesh we know that our lives on earth will end...and after we die we do not have this knowledge anymore b/c at the point we are eternal beings (of course now it just comes down to where we spend eternal) so we no longer think about dieing b/c at this point we will exist in this state forever.
"they have no further reward, and even the memory of them is forgotten."
once we die we can no longer gain monetary wealth that would do us any good (basically 'you can't take it with you'). and once your dead after a short while you no longer will be remembered by anybody who is living b/c even those who knew you will die and with them their memories will die as well. i don't think this has anything to do with history remembering you if you've done something great...but more of knowing who you really are personally.
vs 6
"their love, their hate and their jealousy have long since vanished;"
all that person's likes and dislikes and emotions and thoughts and opinions no longer matter once they die b/c that person may no longer carry them. their feelings end then and there.
"never again will they have a part in anything that happens under the sun."
once a person dies they no longer have any direct influence of anything that happens in the world of the flesh, they can not interact with it and make changes to anything anymore.
i hope that helps, that's really about all i can think of from reading the verses and looking at a couple commentaries as well to see what those writers said (which wasn't much)....
