I went to Japan last summer and totally forgot about this mistery until recently brought up in a conversation...

When I went to japan, in most female bathrooms...

the toilets have buttons right?

well... I wonder..what's the function of one button?

cuz one released a bidet, another released the same thing(a bidet is like a little water sprinkler to clean ya) one flushed..and....

one PLAYED A FLUSHING SOUND...thats it. It doesn't flush, it just plays the SOUND of A FLUSH....

Does anyone know what it's for? I know its a stupid question but hey, it's the little mysteries of life I ask about... XP

I totally miss that button. It makes it so that no one can hear you in the bathroom. Something nice and comforting about that to me. biggrin

the Japanese have an extremely formal society, which is borne out of having so many people live in such close proximity to each other for so many thousands of years. when you don't have the physical space available for everyone to cultivate their Personal Space Bubble, you do it mentally.

One way to keep that Mental Personal Space Bubble up and running is to keep people from hearing you urinate. (or defecate too, i suppose). not that it should be a surprise what a person is doing in a bathroom stall, as there's really only three option: pee, poop, or smoke joints if you're in jr high and still believe you can get away with that. i doubt the flushing sound would help with the third option there, but i'm sure someone's tried it at some point.

so, yeah. just a mental comfort thing. personally, i don't really care; we're all human, we all eliminate wastes, just deal with it and move on in life. but i guess everyone has their druthers X D.

yea me too.
iv heard of it before and yup thats the reason, for courtesy and so others don't hear you going..
yea id like one of those, i live in a house with 3 guys and theres 2 toilets, i prefer the one downstairs so no one hears me. if i had one of those buttons id never have to go downstairs for that stuff lol
