Yotaka lay on a large rock overhanging a quite pool of water. The day was calm, and the only ripples in the water were caused by the tears running down her muzzle and dripping into the pool below. Why was she not accepted? Every time she tried to make friends, she was forcibly driven away - she had the scars to prove it. At best she was ignored, at worst... she didn't want to think about at worst. She didn't want to think at all, right now. If only she could have one Kylan, just one, accept her she felt she could be content.

A black and blue male wandered around more or less aimlessly, groaning a bit and mumbling quietly as he treaded the small path, glad someone had smoothened the underbrush. His paws were sore, his muscles aching, and he was hopelessly lost.
"Oh, Quinn, you sure couldn't made a bigger mess of this. Your sense of direction-- or the lack of it, horrible!" The Kylan scolded himself, coming to a calm pool of water. He sighed with relief, leaning down for a drink. The spines sticking out of his back an extra weight as he dipped his muzzle in the water.

Contenting his thrist, he raised his head, his eyes wide as he realized there was another of his kind not that far from him, perched upon a boulder.
"Oh goodness gracious!" The male exclaimed loudly, fast up on his feet. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to intrude, I--" he paused, noting a tear drop in the water.
"Oh. Oh, I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to upset you, not at all, not me, never I swear."

Startled, Yota quickly wiped the tears from her face with a paw before looking up at the stranger she had somehow failed to notice. She had learned long ago not to let them see her weak, and she berated herself for her carelessness now.
When she looked up, however, she could not help but stare. The male standing in front of her was beautifully colored, but that was not what made her stare. He had spines sticking up from his shoulders! In her shock, she said the first thing that came to mind.
"I hope those weren't quite so sharp when you were born..." She trailed off realizing what she had just said. "I... I'm sorry, I shouldn't have..." She fell silent, looking away and her body tensing in anticipation of the anger and rejection she had learned to expect.

Quinn blinked at her words, glancing at his shoulders and breaking to a nervous laugh. Right, people usually noticed those first. For the most part, the feedback wasn't particularily mean, but he still would've preferred to be regarded as your average Kylan.

"Hee.. yeah. They were just stubs back then, no worries," he replied with a heartfelt smile. Though it did arouse a small worry, since they had been growing with age. Hopefully they'd halt their progress. Seeing the other taken aback by her own frankness, he felt himself panic a little.
"Oh, no no! I get that all the time, trust me, it's no biggie," he nodded frantically, pacing on his spot anxiously. "Don't worry about it."

She blinked when the expected insults and/or violence did not materialize. Cautiously she opened her eyes and glanced up at the strange male through her lashes.
"Y...you mean you're not mad at me? People are always mad at me, even when I haven't done anything." He looked so uncomfortable that she actually started feeling bad for him, something that had never happened before. It could not have been easy for him, being so different. But at least he knew why he was different, she thought to herself. No one had ever deigned to tell her why she was such an outcast, and she had learned not to ask. They just got upset, as if she should know and the fact that she didn't was just another mark against her.

Cocking his head to the side, the male blinked in obvious disbelief. Mad?
"Oh, heavens, no!" He shook his head, almost having a quil poke him in the eye. "Mad, never. See, I figured, if I'd get mad everytime someone pointed out my pointies," he paused, looking at his spikes again, "as I prefer to call them-- anyway, I just thought that I'd be mad all the time. And that'd be quite unfortunate, don't you think?"
He then stopped to ponder, his chin tipped up as he peered up toward the slightly clouded sky. "But, I gather, your situation is quite grievous as is, having people upset with you for no apparent reason. Yes, that is a more dire position."

Mustering a friendly smile after all his thoughtful musing, Quinn bowed his head in a small greeting. He had a tendency to talk a lot and in a manner fairly difficult to follow. He stood in his place, however, not approaching the cautious lady. He didn't want to scare her away, in fact, she seemed rather fascinating. It simply didn't make sense to him how would others have such a hostile attitude towards her.

"Oh, pardon my manners, my fair madam," he quickly added, straightening up. "My name's Quinn, from the Karo residence. May I ask for your name?"

"I... I'm Yotaka." Gaining courage from the continued lack of hostility - and indeed, friendliness - on the part of the strange male, she volunteered more information. "No one else seems to mind being mad all the time. At least, not around me. I manage though, if I stay out of their way it's not too bad..." She trailed off, unsure of what else to say. She wasn't used to talking much.

Embarrassed that she didn't know how to respond to the friendly overtures of this strange *handsome* no, don't think that, it only brings trouble male, and confused by her reaction *feelings* no! he's different, but even so... she looked down at her feet again, drawing little patterns in the dirt and then hastily wiping them away when she realized that one almost looked like a heart.

"Well, I won't be mad with you," the male smiled encouragingly, shaking his head a bit. "I'm not very good at being angry, anyway, I prefer to stick to more positive feelings. Life is too short for moping around, see."

He then dared to proceed a little closer, walking at the water's edge and eying Yotaka up and down. No, she didn't look disfigured in the way he was, so that couldn't be the reason for all the hatred she'd had to put up with.
"It's a lovely name," he continued after a moment, having proceeded near to the boulder she was perched upon. "I quite like it."

Yota blushed, not that it was visible beneath her red fur. He couldn't be... could he? Just a little, she allowed the warm touch of hope into her heart. She knew she was opening herself up to the potential of more pain than any physical beating could ever cause, but for once in her life she wanted to take the chance. She had a feeling that this strange and, yes, handsome male would not hurt her.

Oblivious, and a little unsure, Quinn seated himself beside the boulder, looking up at the fairly intriguing female. As she remained silent for what seemed an uncomfortably long time for a talkative creature like himself, he cleared his throat a bit and gave a warm smile.
"Are you familiar with the area, Yotaka? I'm new here, see, just recently left the safe haven of my keeper's den. Well, if you can call it a den, it's more like a mansion-- or a zoo, considering the wide variety that is in the family.. Well, anyway. I'm not familiar with my surroundings," he paused for a breath, his tail slowly brushing at the gravel as he glanced at the water. He liked water.. oh wait, don't get distracted now.
"So I was just wondering, if you could show me around? Do you live around here?"

"I know the area." She had to, to stay out of the way of other Kylan. "I've lived around here for as long as I can remember. I could show you around... if you like."
This explained why she had never seen this Kylan before, and why he did not know about the animosity the others felt towards her. She was glad she had met him first, before thay had a chance to turn him against her too.

"Splendid!"
Quinn was very pleased. Having spent the early stages of his life in the gentle loving care of his caretaker, he'd not learned that much about the environment and how to survive in it-- he only knew the basics he got from Karo's other residents. Having someone show him around was more than marvelous.
"I'd like that very much, miss Yotaka. I'd like to know where it's safe and which areas to avoid, where to find a place to rest and a place to feed, and-- well, you must get the picture by now."
His tail flicked enthusiastically from side to side and he smiled brightly. What a lucky coincidence to have met the female.
A pretty one, too.

Yota giggled slightly at the other's enthusiasm, then stopped, a surprised (and very comical) look on her face. She'd never been comfortable enough around anyone to giggle before, and had had no reason to when alone. Was she really already this comfortable around this strange, cheerful male? It seemed so. The thought scared her a little, but it also made her feel warm deep inside her, in a place that had always felt so cold and empty before.
"You... you can call me Yota." she whispered, so quite it could barely be heard.

"Miss Yota it is, then."
Quinn struck a brilliant smile, as much as a Kylan could smile without looking hostile. He was a little puzzled at the female's sheer surprise of her own merry giggle, but decided he'd not delve into it. It was not his business why a little laugh would be somehow extraordinary.
Striding up beside her, he noted that he was a fair amount bigger than Yotaka. Blinking, he lowered his head a little to accommodate to their difference in height.
"So, where to?"

Yota smiled. "Just Yota is fine. Unless you want me to call you Sir Quinn?" She was joking, but if her persisted she would call him that.
"Is there anything in particular you'd like to see? Otherwise, I was just gonna show you some good places for food, or shelter if you're caught by a sudden storm or something. And a surprise, and that's all I'm saying about that." She grinned. He seemed like the curious sort, and she wanted to tease him some.
