Yula Eldic crouched uncertainly near her usually meeting place, inside a small rest station for travelers so that she could see the small pocket of a valley, nearly a trench, that Ronyo would have to pass through on his way to her. The station was little more than a roof useful in windy, rough weather, or as protection against some of the strange wild animals that might brave the southwestern outskirts of Eldic Estates.

She had no idea that her mission her had saved her from being caught and expelled from Feretris as an exile, though she too was part of what was erroneously considered one entity, the underground rebellion. She was one of the more extreme members, who thought of themselves as the real rebellion, the real catalyst for social change, many of whom believed that violence was inevitable if Feretris were to become a nation where men were free. At the rate things were going, one would have trouble proving them wrong.

Women like Yula had what they called conversion stories, which explained why they were against the society that had tried to teach them that men were inferior. They called them conversion stories because the subordination was underpinned by religious rationalization. They saw the story of the god and goddess as one of unfair tyranny between beings of equal status. Right now, part of Yula was wishing that she had no conversion story, and that she lived a normal life, preferably in the north of Feretris from where very few troubling stories came, or even better, a life in a different country entirely, where this sort of conflict did not exist.

She had just witnessed, the night before, a terrible explosion of violence, and even though she supported such acts in theory, having them happen on her doorstep was another matter. She had half a mind to simply run away, whether or not her contact showed up. But she would at least wait, for they had arranged this over a week ago, and when the raid was only a rumor among the most knowledgeable. Now the slave that she strove to free needed it all the more in order to escape the back-lash that the the cruelest women in Eldic estates would be pushing for in order to force meaning unto to chaos, in order to find out what the hell had happened. Yet not even someone like Yula was quite certain of that. She hoped that the enemy of her enemy was her friend, and wondered if the Feretris government, or possibly the economy, could truly be crippled by raids like this out on the fringe.

She would ask Ronyo, though he probably did not know, about the events that had transpired. He had connections that she had not; people in the tribes, tribes she only vaguely understood. By the same token, she had connections that he did not, as a woman in Feretris, which was the initial drive for these meetings.

Ronyo stayed low and kept his ears tuned to his surroundings. He was to meet a woman named Yula, and help a man escape from Feretris for good. Although this wasn’t Ronyo’s first underground mission it was close. His normal job was to use animal messengers to go contact members who where out of human reach.

He saw the “roof” of the structure he was to meet Yula in. He made sure to pass in full view of the occupants so they would know it was him. As he got closer to the station he could almost feel the tension growing. Missions like this were always pushing every strand of luck each member had.

When he made it inside he could see Yula and her escapee. Both seemed on edge, as they should be, and ready to get away from the area.

“My name is Ronyo, I hope you two have had a safe journey so far. Now lets move quickly please we can talk as we walk.”

Yula and the young boy held back. There was something wrong with this boy, a thing which has probably prompted Yula to pick him as the next attempted escapee. He was a young preteen, about the age of initial training and assignment, a very critical time in any slave's life, where even the even-tempered boy could run foul of his mistresses if there was a mismatch between his abilities and the chosen assignment. It was at this age that boys stopped being viewed as kittens or dogs, and were seen instead as dangerous wolves, deserving no mercy. And sometimes, do to the standard warped upbringing of the earlier years, some of them really were like wolves. This wolf couldn't talk and hung back, clinging to Yula.

It was a handicap like this, Yula's pity, that could get Ronyo killed. This must have been why it had been insisted that a human show up to escort the boy. This escapee was reluctant, possible confused, possibly mentally deficient.

"Go!" Yula hissed at the boy, fully aware that any delay put her own life in more danger. "This man will help you. Go!" Panic was rising in her voice, which put fear into the boy's heart. He let go, but shrank away from them both. Most people feared the unknown, when it came down to it, although very few of the escapees that were brought here actually refused to leave. Those that did were usually slaughtered away from this place.

Ronyo saw the ferial nature of the young boy and was taken aback. If a child was brought to such ends what kind of place was Feretris. He had heard stories but all just seemed that. Ronyo never imagined a place that treated people with such dislike.

Ronyo knelt down and put a hand out to the boy. Much the way he had earned the trust of wolves and foxes. He stood completely still allowing the boy to look at him without flinching to sudden movement. The tension was getting thicker and the nomad was almost to the point of drawing his swords out of a precaution. He didn’t however, and stayed still trying to let the boy know it was ok to come with him. Yula was getting more agitated the longer this drug itself out. This should have already been done with and both parties have gone there own ways.

The boy crouched, staring suspiciously at Ronyo, but he did let go of the girl. Once freed, Yula shoved a small bag at Ronyo. "This might help him, if he'll eat it. The boy is too tense. Good luck." She turned, nearly out the door in one leap, but paused to shoot out over her shoulder, "His name is Kuk."

Kuk watched her lips as she spoke, then directed his attention back to Ronyo. His gaze was more than stubborn, hinting at anger and resentment. Certainly not an ideal candidate for crossing over.

“Take care of yourself lady Yula.”

Ronyo gave a wave to the woman as she called out the boy’s name.

“So, you name is Kuk? My name is Ronyo. I have the feelin your not to trusting of me right now. I can understand, from what my father has told me you’ve probably been through hell. I hope we can change that. Would you follow me please Kuk?”

Ronyo looked at the bag then at the boy. He opened the bag and pulled a piece of food. He held it up to Kuk and stood still again.

“This is yours if you want it right now. I won’t eat any of it, I promise.”

Kuk sighed, as if defeated, and took the offered food. He would follow Ronyo for now, even if sluggishly and reluctantly. Making it out of the building was one hurdle, but not the biggest. The building provided some shelter from prying eyes, but after a few small hills and trenches, they were to cross a flat, open space without any protection. By the time they got to the first wide, flat space to cross, it was dusk, a time when fires were not lit yet and so visibility was quite low.

Here, again, the boy held back. He was proving to be quite difficult, perhaps even insane. It was hard to tell since he could not talk and did not attempt any other form of communication. He crouched down behind the crest of the hill they were on, and refused to move. This place was not exactly the most protected.

Ronyo saw Kuk suddenly stop and crouch by the small hill he had just come over. The boy just sat there looking at the open wilderness and not showing any signs he intended to move. Ronyo gave a sigh an turned around to look at the boy better.

“So this is where you want to camp tonight? Well its not very protected but it is nice to look at. Ok have it your way, it your choice.”

Ronyo sat down next to the boy and looked out at the hill tops. He wasn’t quiet sure why the boy had stopped but it didn’t make much difference to him.

“One of the things my father told me when he was helping people from Feretris,” Ronyo began, “was how little choices the men in Feretris had. That the whole idea behind getting men out of Feretris was freedom. Freedom to choose ones own destiny. He told me, that humans are just like all other wild animals out there. If you restrict there freedoms or lock them in a cage they die quickly, and sooner or later one or more of those animals will get tired of being caged or having it’s freedoms taken, and then the on who caged the animal will strike back. Believe me Kuk, nothing is more terrifying then an animal who has had enough. There isn’t magic in the world that can match its intensity.”

Ronyo had no idea if he was reaching the boy but he would keep trying. For now however they would sleep under the stars. Ronyo was no idiot though, he sent a call to neighboring animals to come close to them and watch over them for the night. It was the only defense he could put in place, but at least it was something.

Ronyo would wake that night to an alert that one of his animals had been killed. Though he could exert some influence over animals, they were still wild, and least controlled as he slept. To be sure, they watched over him. However, one fox had attempted to satisfy its own hunger, and been eaten by a large dog in a chicken coop.

When Ronyo awoke, Kuk was gone, and the other animals were restless.

After waking to the knowledge of one of the animals deaths Ronyo turned his head to look at where Kuk had been sleeping. They had used a grassy hill as there bed and let the animals watch over them. When only an impression of the boy looked back at him Ronyo’s eyes went wide. The boy was gone, left in the night. Ronyo kicked his feet out and used the motion to spring himself to a low crouch. His hands steadied his low position as his eyes scanned the area.

He could since the animals that had watched over them were tired and not in the best of moods. He would not need there mass help now and they could return to there normal lives. He gave a quiet thanks to them all and continued to scan for the boy.

He could see areas were the grass had been freshly bent and could see the long gaps in the impressions. That mean the boy was running, but from what. Ronyo was getting the impression that this “boy” was more like a domesticated dog or cat. It had a primal side but lacked anything that could contend with a true wild animal. Ronyo only hopped that this domesticated boy did not share the trait of returning home after being away. If that was to be the case the boy might have to be carried out over his shoulder.

Ronyo took a sniff of the air as a gust of wind blew past him. The night was still young and day light would not come soon. The half moon and a few stars offered the only light on that night. Ronyo moved swiftly and silently along the path the boy Kuk has left. His right hand stayed within easy reached of his blades. His left would take longer to come around and grab its respected blade, but it was a maneuver that Ronyo had performed many a time. Time was not on his side, and the boy must be found before damage to himself, Ronyo, or the underground was done.

As Ronyo scouted, he began to run into patrols. Strange happenings in Feretris had in some places increased guards, and in others depleted them. Although the animals were able to tell him in what direction the boy had gone, and one even warned him of the upcoming guard, there was nothing he could do to save the boy before the guard found him.

Kuk crouched in the gaurd's lamp-light, unable to respond to his queries. As Ronyo came close enough to see, the boy bolted, and was felled by a throwing axe.
PostPosted: Thu Nov 01, 2007 7:45 pm

Ronyo watched the boy fall in slow motion. The axe seemed to meld with the boy’s back and upon impact Kuk gave a odd lurch. When he hit the ground he didn’t move he just laid there. Ronyo could hardly believe what he had just seen. Something grabbed him though, something deep down within his being. His eyes narrowed and he focused on the guard who had thrown the axe. He leapt at the guard and his blades appeared in his hands as if they had been there all along. The guard looked up in time to see two silvery blurs streak down over his head.

Ronyo was already leaving the city before the blood of his recently fallen foe had run cold. He was slightly unsure of what he had done, but the blood on his swords said it all. Strange though, he wasn’t sure if he felt bad about it. The guard had killed the innocent boy. Ronyo shook his head and continued to run off with his thoughts swirling over the events.
