The sun was setting upon the horizon, making the vast sea in the backdrop glimmer a brilliant gold. Upon a solo ridge, high above the shore, sat a mare with a mane & tail that matched the sunset sky. Her emerald eyes were fixed upon the landscape below as she sang to herself; a sort of lonely, yet beautiful song. Content with enjoying the scenery, she smiled. What wonders nature beholds she thought to herself. It was so interesting that at evening, the sun's last light peering over the Earth could turn the sea such a glittering gold color. What could be more intruiging than such a natural wonder?

Ebony wings sent large dark shadows spanning against the landscape as the setting sun cast it's light on the stallion. His wing beats were slow as he mostly glided over the valley on his way home. This time of day was always so peaceful it made him want to sleep. Just as the thought crossed his mind he caught a snatch of a song that sounded like it was trying to put him out. His crimson gaze fell downwards where he could see the most dazzling white horse standing upon a cliff.
Curious he leaned in circling low like a hawk to catch a better glimpse. The closer he got the more of the song he could hear and it became apparent that this horse was a mare and she seemed to be sad about something. "Tell me who broke your heart so I may break them." He said landing behind her with a soft thud. His wings fluttered slightly as he folded them to his sides. He squinted his eyes slightly trying to get a better glimpse of her but with the light behind her all he could see was her silhouette.

The sudden appearance of the stranger startled the mare from her singing. She turned and gazed up at him. She opened her mouth to speak, but her heart was pounding so fast that no words came. Taking to her hooves quickly and moved out of the sunlight. Taking a moment to catch her breath, she studied him. Violet haired, with piercing crimson eyes. He seemed dark & intimidating, but not unfriendly. She also noticed that of coarse he was winged, like her; and apparently quite good on them since he'd snuck up on her.
Finally, after a moments thought and the chance to calm her beating heart, she found herself able to speak again. Although, what to say was now the current problem. "I---um" she began, her emerald eyes still studying him as she pondered what to say to such a comment. Both the comment and his clothes made her think back to the other clothed stallion she'd met. Her head lowered slightly. "It was just a crush I had on someone" she began. Her voice was calm & her tone mellow.
Was she really that heartbroken? Well, definantly not heartbroken enough to send a stranger to 'break' someone who'd led her on. She gathered up herself and continued in a serene voice, "As noble as your intentions are, sir, there will be no need to 'break' anyone." She smiled sweetly, to let the stallion know she was flattered at his intent to defend her heart. Although, from the way he'd put it, she couldn't really tell if his intentions fell under the category of 'noble.' This caused her to giggle.
"I'm Maui, who might you be 'oh defender of my honor?'" she asked politely.

With the sunlight at a different angle Dark was able to make out a few details that were hazy before as she spoke. She had a mane and tail of soft curls not unlike the dawn in color and what could have been mistaken for the most obvious signs of pregnancy turned out to be a pair of bright pink wings. In all of his travels here the thief had only encountered a few with wings like his own. One of those horses was Krad and the others he had only seen in passing one day.
Realizing he had been staring he pulled himself back to reality to listen to her tale. So he had hit the nail on the head. She was having boy troubles, it seemed to be a plague in these parts. It suited him just fine, however. When a person was heartbroken it was much easier to get close to them especially to girls here who seemed to think that the hard to get game worked for long periods of time.
"I'm Dark Mousey." He said bowing slightly a smile gracing his face at the sound of her laughter. It was quite musical, like a bell. With a voice like that he wasn't surprised that her song had drawn him in. "I don't think I can be a 'defender' until I actually do some fighting for your pretty face." He really had no intentions of hurting anyone, it just wasn't his style. A mares tears were shed many times a day and if he tended to all of them he'd have no time for thieving.

Maui smiled again. "Pleased to meet you Dark Mousey. She inclined her head as she spoke. "Well you've successfully flattered me with talk of protecting my 'broken' heart" she added, "But what's done is done, right? No use being too troubled about what has passed. Always look on to a brighter future as Oathkeeper would say."
Maui paused and gazed between the sunset and Dark. "It'll be night soon, I fancy the late evening and early night and if you haven't a prior engagement, would you care for a stroll to somewhere?" she asked kindly. "And perhapse, if you think a stroll to dull, we could always find an activity to engage in. I feel like I've been wallowing around long enough here anyhow" she laughed brightly.
The sun behind her was almost gone beyond the sea's horizon, turning the sky dark violet & crimson, now matching the stallion's colorations rather than her's as it had previously. "I'm sure I owe more interesting conversation anyways" she jested, smirking cutely.

Dark was trying his best not to laugh. She spoke so formally, that kind of speech wasn't needed with him. He was glad he was dealing with an optimist though, the stallion had grown tired of dealing with the overly depressed. "Nope, I'm free." He said casually flexing his muscles slightly to keep himself relaxed. As he spoke he watched the sun sink into the waves. It was getting to be closer to his favorite time of day so to speak. "But...instead of a walk how bout we stretch our wings for a bit?"
This was something he'd been longing to try for a long time that he'd never been able to. Soaring in the skies with another that wasn't trying to kill him. "The land's quite a sight from a night sky." He said pushing his point a little further. He found he was being a little childish but it wasn't escaping in his voice or in his eyes even.

Whilst Maui was quite happy that the stallion was enthusiastic about accompanying her, a flicker of imbarassment came across her face. Shaking it off she laughed at herself. "I would imaging the sky looks breathtaking from the air, but, alas, I cannot fly" she exclaimed. She didn't sound sad or disappointed, but she felt quite reduculous about it.
She smiled sweetly and gave the same line she'd given so many time before. "My mother and adoptive father, Oathkeeper, don't have wings. I never knew my birth father, in whom I assume was who I'd inherited them from. Therefor, I never had anyone to learn from---and I couldn't quite get the hang of it on my own" she explained, still smiling.
Optimistically, as always, she nodded. "But I could always learn---that is, if you wouldn't find it a waist of time to teach me" she continued, "As a fair trade, once I've gotten the hang of it; we can go on that night flight." Maui beamed happily. She was a very spirited and strong willed mare; she believed whole heartedly, that if taught, she'd catch on quite quickly.

Dark was shocked and as much as he wanted to he didn't let the expression flicker to his face even for a moment. He had finally met another flyer and she couldn't fly. Dark was still trying to process this when she asked him to teach her a bit indirectly. He blinked. Could he teach her? It wasn't as much a matter of time as much as it was ability. Sure he'd taught Scarlet manners and things like that but this was flying. Flying was one of those things you could die from if it wasn't done properly, though you'd have to be pretty high for it to lead to death, or alone.
He sighed and tossed his head back giving her a smile to hide his nervousness at his decision. "I'll teach you how to fly on one condition. That condition is we don't practice near these cliffs." If she flew high away from the cliffs that would be okay but turning only slightly in the air could mean the difference between a safe landing and certain death where cliffs were involved.
He glanced past the mare to the ocean where the sun had just sunk from view entirely. Somehow he new this was a bad idea but he couldn't bring himself to tell the girl no.

Maui beamed, full confidence & excitement flooding her face. Finally someone was going to teach her; finally she would fly! "I'll take that condition; I understand its probably more dangerous around cliffs for a beginner" she proclaimed with a nod. "Where to to learn then?" she asked, gazing around. She supposed a wide open meadow or stretch of land was in order.
Usually quite good at catching body language, the mare was oblivious to the stallion's worry. She was far to enthusiasticly caught up in what was about to occur that she was practically prancing in place. Her energy took up a near childish-giddyness as she smiled again. "I can get to a short glide, but its the lift & staying airbourn that I have the trouble figuring out how to do! I'm sure if I'm told and shown the proper way to lift and stay airbourn, I could be soaring in no time!" she exclaimed.

Dark looked around trying to find a good spot. What would work well for learning to fly. The needed a large stretch of land but they also needed a good place to catch the wind. He approached the edge of the cliff and looked down to the beach. It would work perfectly and they didn't run as much of a risk of getting hurt. The water would soften any fall. The only downsides were the rocks that dotted the water every so often and that a wet wing was a useless wing.
"We'll learn on the beach." He said turning back to Maui with a bit of a victorious grin on his face. It would be a little bit of a trek down from the cliff to the more level sands but once there it would probably be worth it. Probably mean that if she didn't hit a rock or drown in the ocean or catch more wind then she knew what to do with, if those things didn't happen things should go swimmingly...right?
"It's a good place." He said returning to her side with a smile to disguise his worry. He nodded to her to follow before setting off slowly to make sure she stayed at his side on the way down. "The winds are steady and the water is a good place to crash land if you're having problems." To himself he added the she would also stick out against a dark background so he could track her easier.

Glancing down at the shoreline below, Maui nodded cheerily. "Sounds like a good, safe place to learn to me too" she added. She paused a moment, then looked back at Dark Mousey and smirked. Apparently her childish happiness had not yet left her yet. "Race you down?" she chirped. She had learned speed from Oathkeeper and she had hoped that would help make learning flight easier---at least thats what Oathkeeper thought as well and that's all he could manage to teach her towards the goal of aviation. She waited on him to either agree, or like others make a mad dash for a head start towards the pathway leading down to the sea.

A single purple brow raised as he gave Maui a smirk. She wanted to race him? While it was true he wasn't the fastest thing on the ground he had the obvious advantage with his wings. He chuckled deciding to humor her for a bit. "Meet you there." He called cantering off not really caring to go full speed. To make her feel better he even bowed his head and made it look as though he was running full out. Amoena hated it when he treated her like she couldn't be better then he was but then, he figured Amoena was a stallion in disguise. Mare's liked feeling like they were amazing and it was his job to make them feel that way...in more ways then one.

Excited, Maui took off after him. Launching into canter then full gallop quite quickly---she gained ground on him in no time. The mare was quite nimble on her hooves; Oathkeeper had taught her well. She'd yet to be able to beat her father-figure in a race though, so she wasn't quite sure how fast she was exactly. She'd actually come close quite a few times, so it made her wonder. Was she fast for a mare or average? Or was Oathkeeper just an extra fast stallion? Perhapse extra slow? The thoughts boggled her mind, but she was fully of spirit as she came side to side with Dark; jokingly keeping pace she shouted over the wind rushing by them as they wound down towards the shore, "You're not trying your hardest, are you?" Her heart was pounding wildly in her chest, but not from exaustion or how fast she was going, but from the thrill of the race; the fun of it all. And more importantly, it was pounding a special beat...one she'd never felt before. Perhapse extra excitement and anticipation about the possiblity of learning to fly? Or was it something else? she wondered.

The thief was amazed at how quickly she had caught him, even though he wasn't running that fast it should have taken her a bit longer. She was faster then he had thought. "If I was trying my hardest I would be in the air preparing for a landing right now." He said not sounding even a bit out of breath, he was used to the thin air of the skies down here it was easy to get a lungful. She didn't seem to be doing bad with the air herself, she was in good shape. He flashed a smile in her direction before lengthening his strides into an all out gallop.
Would she still be able to catch up with him? He rather hoped so, good speed made for a good steady take off if you could angle your wings right to catch the air flowing around your body. Just thinking about the motions sent a tingle down his spine and, without warning, his wings had unfolded.
The wind caught the feathers of his wings and pushed him skyward. Landing back where he had left the ground would put him a few lengths behind the sunset mare so he decided to play it off as though he had meant to take off. "Meet you at the beach!!!" He called down to her before banking slightly to the side to leave the curving path and over the cliffs to make a beeline for their goal.

Another intense feeling welled up within Maui as she saw him take flight. She'd wanted a fair race for fun and partially to test her skills speed-wise, but seeing him fly...she didn't know if she was mad or envious that he'd cheated, so-to-speak. Gaining speed with her heart in her throat, she did the unimaginable. Without thinking it through, Maui unfolded her wings, lifted her front hooves up and gave a sharp kick-off from the ground with her hind quarters. Letting some subconcious nature take her she glided into the air, beating her wings naturally this time and going with the wind's current.
Down, down, down towards the shore and sea she soared. It took a few moments, but she gained on him yet again. However, the exellerating new sensation of flight finally knocked her to her senses. She was flying! The realization of this made her forget what she was doing and she lost a bit of altitude quickly. Summoning up her strength she managed to stay airborn rather than crashing. Confidence had momentarily returned to her only to have it nearly fade away when she realized---how was she to land?!
"How do I land?!" she called out, doubting he'd hear her over the wind and the crashing waves below. More worry came to her as she thought about crashing just as loudly as the waves were. Come on, don't worry, just try anyhow she told herself. Regaining spirit once more she attempted a landing on her own. Nearing the sand she dropped a bit shakily onto her back hooves, then touched down her front hooves. All went smoothly for a moment---then she went tumbling into the tides infront of her.
Unhurt, but quite startled, she stood back up quickly and shook sea water off of herself. She unknowingly still had a few strands of seaweed caught in her mane as she smiled in Dark's direction. She wasn't sure whether she'd recieve appraisal or a scolding for such a foolhearted attempt.
