The sun was bright today, shining deep into the water around the brown stallion as he swam. But Castellan had already seen what drifted in the upper levels of the sea, and he was bored with watching the fish.

He sank down in the water and let the currents pull him across the sea floor, until he found himself swept over what looked like a horribly deep, horribly dark crevasse. The bold stallion peered in, and was delighted to see even darker caverns to explore. Not giving a thought as to what dangers might lurk in the dark, Castellan just grinned and swam right in, relishing the thought of adventure.

Deep within the dark caverns lurked a second creature. At this depth the caverns reached a near pitch black status, and the new creature was mostly concealed by his surroundings. One thing could clearly be seen however, and that was a series of glowing 'orbs'. Three in a row, to be exact. These caused an eerie glow, letting just a bit of light penetrate the overwhelming dark.

Slowly, Pheno used his legs to pull him across the cavern floor. The tiny bit of light he had was plenty for him to see his surroundings and easily navigate the caverns.

Cas found himself blinking in the near darkness, exploring wasn't nearly as exciting if you couldn't see what you were exploring... He ended up bumping his nose on a couple walls too, further dampening his enthusiasm.

Then he finally saw something interesting. With a grin he swam right up to the three oddly glowing orbs, and stuck out his nose to poke at the middle one. All the while he wondered what kind of strange treasure he had just found.

Rather than treasure, Cas would find himself meeting with a snapping jaw. Pheno could clearly see that this prey was too large to take down...without requiring -too- much effort. He could if he wanted to, but this simply wasn't one of those times he wanted to. Snapping and general threats though were just fine.

Pheno rose, lifting his body off the cavern floor to glare at the other stallion. Thankfully Cas had chosen the middle 'orb' to poke, as the other two were actually Pheno's eyes. Now narrowed, the deep-sea Mer had an air of disgust about him.

Cas squeaked and pulled back when he realized that his glowing treasure was actually a creature, and a creature that would have bit him had he stayed where he was. The startled stallion jerked back a bit too far, and in the dark he thumped his head against the lip of the cave's entrance.

"Owwww..." he whined, still trying to wiggle backwards and out into the marginally less dark crevasse waters. His hindquarters bumped against a rock, and he promptly wound his tail around it.

Easily navigating the depths, the glowing stallion dashed out of his cave to follow the other. He'd be damned if he didn't defend his home.

"Just -what- are you doing here?!"

His voice sounded scratchy, as if it didn't get much use. This, of course, merely added to the eerieness of the situation.

"Your kind belongs up there, where the light of the sun can shine on your coat....not down here where your gaze can hardly penetrate the dark depths."

"I was curious," Castellan muttered in a half whine.

His tail wound tighter around the rock, and he tucked his chin down towards his neck. He could see the other mer in the faint light now, not just the glowing bits on his face, and wondered if it were those glowing eyes that helped the bottom-dweller see better.

"You didn't have to be all creepy with the glowing and snapping at me," Cas said, almost in a sulking tone.

"You didn't have to be snooping in my territory either. Curiosity can be a wondrous tool, but it can be a deathwish as well."

Pheno tossed his head, his dark mane swishing in the surrounding water. The other stallion was downright pathetic. Why go exploring if you were just going to cower and hide at the first sign of danger? He'd be better off in shallower water with less 'creepy' things.

Castellan let the slight current in the fissure push him back and forth. It was just instinct, his clinging reaction and posture, and if he had been clinging to the base of sea weeds instead of bare rock it might have been a useful behavior.

"How would I know it was your territory if I didn't take a peek and see for myself?" he said as he raised his head and grinned. At least the hurt from his head bump was going away.

"You're just lucky it wasn't a shark that could eat you in one gulp."

Pheno settled back to the cavern floor, more comfortable there than floating above it.

"Just -what- would you have done then, hrm? I'm sure your....defense system would work wonders against a huge predator."

Castellan swayed and grinned, but his tail didn't unwind from around that rock.

"Yup! I'd bash up it's toothy snout with my hooves before it could even take a nibble. It would be exciting to actually see a shark close up, wouldn't it? I bet they are really scary... Even more frightening than you, and you're the creepiest thing I've ever seen!"
PostPosted: Fri Dec 14, 2007 10:46 am

"Obviously you haven't seen much yet young one."

The disgruntled mer-stallion grumbled, giving the other an annoyed stare. He really wasn't all that frightening, or really that different. Though he did have to admit his glowing was a bit....odd. But still, compared to other things lurking in the depths he wasn't so bad.

"I've seen lots of things, you're just really, really creepy looking." Castellan just grinned under the other stallion's stare, and didn't show an ounce of instinct for self-preservation.

He chattered on as if he didn't have a care in the world. "I mean, just lurking down there with your weird glowing things, it's like you're just waiting for someone to come along so you can be creepy. You should go out more. We should go on an adventure today, I bet you'd be a little less creepy out in the sunlight."
PostPosted: Fri Dec 14, 2007 11:50 am

"Do you go up to just -anyone- and ask them to go on an adventure? Like sharks, for example?"
That would be an amusing sight....until the shark got tired with the situation and merely gobbled up the other.

"Well if I was waiting for someone to come along so I could be creepy, I suppose I accomplished my goal for the day..."
Pheno snorted, hardly amused by the idle chatter.
"Maybe I like it down here, out of the sunlight..."

"Of course not, sharks are very foul-tempered," Castellan said simply, as though the one he was currently talking to was not fairly foul-tempered as well.

"How can you like it down here? It's all dark and gloomy. I can't even see properly when I squint. How do you find fun things to do when you can't even see where you're swimming?"

He unwound from the rock he had been clinging to, and swam up a bit before glancing back at his new companion with a bright grin. "So, are you coming?"
