"Are you sure he'll be all right?" the woman asked, her face wrought with worry. Xi-Mei grinned, setting a hand on the other woman's arm,
"Don't worry. He just needs some rest and then everything will be fine."

The ostrich-horse looked at his mistress pitifully, and the woman burst into tears,
"Thank you so much, Xi-Mei! I didn't know what to do, but Ren said you would know..."

Xi-Mei squeezed the arm she still had her hand on and smiled again,
"Any time you need me, Hoshi. You're family now."

The woman laughed and they hugged as Xi-Mei headed out the door. She didn't usually go all the way out to the Earth Nation, but this was a special circumstance. Her cousin had an ostrich-horse farm and several of their favourites had come down with a rather strange sickness.

Xi-Mei had come down to have a look, and over the past week had managed to get them all back to health. Hoshi's particular favourite had had a rougher time of it than the others, though, and she'd only just felt confident he'd be okay and she could leave.

She shut the door to their house, looking about. Perhaps she'd hit the marketplace for a bit before catching a ship back to her home territory.

"Alya! Wait, where are you going?!"

"To the marketplace!" The young airbender called back to her elder brother, ignoring his protests. "Tell mother and father that I'll be back in a few hours!" With that, she was running from the little trail that led to her home.

"Mm!" Raising both arms over her head, the girl stretched. It was so nice to be back home! The two weeks that were spent being kidnapped and locked up in the cell had been dreadful - though that was an understatement. One would have thought that, after an incident like that, she would have been frightened to go out alone for a while. That wasn't the case with Alya, however. On the contrary, she was just itching to take a walk around the familiar area.

Passing by an ostrich-horse farm, Alya found her thoughts wandering to the others she had met while captivated. Were they already? Did they all get home safely? Would she meet them again? It'd be nice to meet them again, sometim -

"Oh!" Having been lost in her thoughts, the small girl hadn't noticed that someone had stepped out in front of her, until it was too late. Stumbling backwards, she fell on her bottom. "Ouch. I'm sorry!" Alya looked up at the older girl apologetically, a sheepish smile on her face.

Xi-Mei laughed and smiled, reaching a hand down to grab the little girl by the arm and help her up,
"Might watch where you're going if you don't want to bump into people," she teased.

What a cute little girl! And from the looks of her, she had some Airbender blood in her as well.

"Where are you headed in such a hurry?"

"Thank you," Alya chirped as the older girl helped her up. Brushing the dust off herself, she grinned cheerfully. "And I know - I was just a little distracted, is all!" Then, she added, "Are you okay?" Though it was unlikely she had hurt the other girl, it was always good to be careful and polite.

Curiously, she tilted her head to the side as she looked at her. Her appearence seemed to remind Alya of her mother, for some reason. Was this girl an airbender as well?

Before she could ask, a question was directed to her. Perking up, she pointed down the path. "To the marketplace! I was hoping to buy something nice with the allowance my family gave me." Something suddenly clicked inside of her, and she took a hasty step back, bowing her head.

"Oh! And um, my name is Alya! Nice to meetcha!"

Xi-Mei giggled. How cute this little girl was! She reminded her of the young ones who'd just entered the Temple to learn about Airbending. They were really sweet, too.

"I'm Xi-Mei," she returned the greeting, "Of the Airbenders. Almost a master, in fact..." but she quickly realized perhaps she was being too talkative,
"Well, I"m heading to the marketplace also. Perhaps we can make the journey together?"

She hoisted her bag of veterinary supplies over her shoulder again-- they'd been knocked loose by her encounter and fallen down to her hands instead.

Alya's brown eyes lit up as she clapped her hands together. "You're an airbender?" She asked, seeming delighted. This was the first other airbender she had met - excluding her mother, of course.

"My mother is an airbender too!" The small girl informed the older girl happily, "And so am I! ...But I'm still in-training, of course." She added the last part with a sheepish smile. "Anyways, it's very nice to meet you, Miss Xi-Mei!"

"Oh? You're heading to the marketplace as well? Then yes, lets go together! I'm sure my family will be happier if I were in the company of someone else, anyways, after the little incident a while ago." The girl grinned, rubbing the back of her head.

Xi-Mei nodded,
"Yep, I am!" Then grinned as the girl informed her of the rest, "Oh! I thought you must have some airbender blood-- you look like one."

She offered the girl an arm,
"Sure am, I thought I'd have a look around. I haven't been to the Earth Kingdom before, really, so I thought I'd see what sorts of things they sell here."

She blinked at the mention of an incident,
"Oh? You mean that kidnapping that happened? That was pretty awful. I can understand why your parents might worry if some of the kids were taken from this area. I think I remember hearing some of them were Earth Kingdom kids."

"Yay! You're the first other airbender that I've met!" Alya seemed genuinely happy about this. "And yup! My mother is from an Air Temple, but my father is from the Earth Kingdom. We moved here after my big brother was born."

Reaching up, the little girl took the offered arm with a bright smile, before nodding her head enthusiastically. "I can show you around, if you'd like! I know this place pretty well." Then, she looked up at the older girl curiously, "Why did you come to the Earth Kingdom today, if you don't mind me asking?"

"It was horrible." The smile on her face had been replaced with a deep frown as the kidnapping was mentioned. "The cells were dark and dirty, and none of us knew where we were!" She seemed either unbothered, or unaware, that she was speaking about her personal experience outloud. "But we were saved after by a group of people, and were returned home. I hope the others got home safely too."

Alya made a face, "Mother and father don't like me going out alone anymore." She had been terrified at the time of the kidnapping, but now, she seemed to talk about it almost casually. That was Alya, for you.

Xi-Mei's eyes grew wide,
"Oh my!" This was one of the kids who'd been kidnapped? The poor little thing!

"That must've been terrible!" she couldn't imagine having been ripped from her parents at a small ag...well, really, she could because she'd been sent off the to Temple quite young, but it wasn't quite the same thing. She'd -wanted- to go to the Temple and expected it and she could see her parents if she wanted to.

"I'm sorry for what you went through. As far as why I'm here-- well, I'm friends with the woman who owns that ostrich-horse farm, and they were sick, so I came to take care of them for her."

"It was...pretty bad, yeah," Alya admitted, kicking a pebble by her feet as she walked, "But I had company, so I wasn't lonely or anything. I was just worried if my family was fine." When she had finally been taken back home, the first thoughts Alya had hadn't been that she was happy to be home, but that she was happy to see that her family was all safe and sound. If anything happened to them...well, then Alya's whole 'bright outlook on life' would completely shatter.

"Well, at least everyone has returned home now, yes?" Smiling at Xi-Mei, she tilted her head as she listened intently to the other girl, before her eyes lit up. "You came to take care of the ostrich-horses? So that means you take care of animals? A ve...ve..." Drat, what was the word?

Furrowing her brows, the girl chewed on her bottom lip as she tried to recall the word. It was a rather long word, and meant a person who treated animals as a occupation...

Xi-Mei nodded,
"That's right. I'm a veterinarian."

She'd always had a special fondness for animals. They were like a bunch of brothers and sisters-- something she'd never had before.

"I'm glad your family's okay, though, and that you are too."

Clasping her hands together, the girl's eyes lit up. "Right! A vetern...veterina..." Making a face, she skipped over the word, continuing, "But wow, that must be a fun job! To work with all those animals..." Alya trailed off with a happy sigh. How she wanted to get a pet, but she never knew what kind of pet she wanted. Her parents had agreed to allow her to keep an animal as long as it was small but her indecisiveness got the better of her.

"What kind of pet do you think someone like me could take care of?" She chirped up suddenly, tilting her head curiously at Xi-Mei. Perhaps the older girl had some suggestions for her?

Smiling up at her, Alya beamed, nodding her head happily. "I'm glad to be home, yup."

Xi-Mei nodded, "Yeah, it's a really fun job. I've always loved animals, and keeping them healthy is even better than just having a bunch of pets, I think!"

Besides, her family tended to move around a lot and sometimes it was hard to take pets with you. So she'd never had very many.

"Perhaps a sparrowkeet? Or a cat-owl." both of those were fairly small creatures that probably wouldn't be -too- much responsibility for such a small girl.
