Name: Jia Li Meaning: Good and Beautiful Nickname: Ji-li (by her relatives), Jia, rarely Li and usually by people who don't know her well Gender: Female Age: 18 Residence: Omashu Bending?: Yes, water. Occupation: Healer, usually with humans, but she never turns up the opportunity to help an animal as well. History: Jia Li was born to Chang and Lian of Omashu. Her roots can be traced back to the Water Tribe at the South Pole, but Jia Li knows nothing of the life there. Her parents are successful merchants and though they used to reside permanently in Omashu, they now live in Ba Sing Se for half the year. She also has an older sister, Maylin who has two daughters (Qi and Lixue) with her husband, Jun. Qi and Lixue love visiting their Aunti Ji-li, but due to their living in a small village nearer the border of the Earth Kingdom where Jun is a farmer, Ji-li doesn't see her nieces often.
When Jia Li was fifteen, she left her family to study with another Healer in a small village away from Omashu. She had their blessing, but the healer refused to let her meet often with her family much less keep up correspondence through letters. It was a way of keeping her from distraction. Whether or not it could be accredited to the healer's strange ways, Jia Li did prosper and due wonderfully under the old woman's teachings. While she is cannot perform miracles, she is very prominent using natural remedies to cure illnesses and aches, while using her bending abilities to cure more difficult wounds. Her bending ability she learned from her mother at a very young age, as well as from her father. She doesn't do well as far as combative bending goes. She could defend herself moderately well against a non-bender, or a supreme novice, but against a master or other strong bender, she would be helpless. It's not that she lacks the ability, but rather the knowledge of combat. She doesn't know any offensive moves. Besides, she lacks any willingness to know such moves anyway. She's fairly passive.
Jia has only recently returned to the big city, and it certainly is taking quite a bit of getting used to. She enjoys people, but misses the open land. Nevertheless, she recognizes that business is better where there are more people, so she talked her parents into buying her a tiny shop and runs her own healing business with herbs and remedies for sale in addition to her services. She will occasionally travel to the outer villages, however, and even to Ba Sing Se either to see her family or to make sure no one in the country is particularly in need of her help. Appearance: Jia is beautiful in a humble sort of fashion. The only thing particularly striking about her would be her crystal blue eyes, especially amongst a family that possesses green, dark blue or brown eyes. Her cheekbones are high, but broad and not prominent. Healthy cheeks around the apple make her face appear youthful especially with a constant, natural rosy blush. Her chin is moderately pronounced topped by semi-full lips and a sort of button nose. Almond rounded eyes with full lashes set off all the features, completing the face as a modest masterpiece.
Her hair is very thick and sometimes rather wavy, but often times she pulls it straight and braids it on either side of her head so that they hang just belong her chest. Her skin is a sort of creamy tan with the tiniest touch of olive colour. She also has a slight spattering of freckles, but they are light and faded. Her build is slight, but not bony. Retaining a womanly figure, broad hips definitely complete the image. Personality: Overall, Jia is kind and very generous. She's the type that would give a loaf of bread to a poor child in the streets, even if she was late and had to find a baker to do so. Her parents would say she is generous to a fault, but she does manage to keep herself afloat very well. She also will assist with healing for very random payments such as a fish or basket of fruit.
Jia is not without her faults, however. Once she is angry with you, she holds a grudge for a really long time. It is simply that it takes a good bit to make her TRULY angry. Perhaps not much to make her frustrated, but you really have to work to enrage her. So once she has been appropriately enraged, it takes a long time for her to want to be around you again, or to forgive you for whatever it was you did. She does, however, have loads of patience for rude people, even if she bitches and cries or gets mopey about it later.
She is also stubborn, in a quiet sort of fashion. "No" or "it cannot be done" are foreign words to her. She has attempted to heal even those who say they could not be healed. Sometimes it works, sometimes it didn't, but she will always try. Likes: Animals, being nice to people, traveling, bending, healing, new clothes, her family (especially Maylin and her daughters) Dislikes: Rudeness, foul smells, tight spaces (is claustrophic to the point that it's obsessive), dirt, "no", "it cannot be done", doubt, spiders (possibly the only living thing she would kill without a second thought)
[will make this pretty later, har]

self arpee. for the helluvit and because i don't have any linkable human arpees. ): and the soa ones are locked to nonguild members anyway. oh... wait, i wonder if the cirque ones are open. hmm, we'll see.
It had been so long since she had seen her family. Not as long as it could have been, but nearly a year since her master had last let her apprentice leave the farm where they lived. What would her nieces be like now? Would they still think she was fun? What if her father's disapproval of her way of life had rubbed off on the rest of the family? True, he was over it now, but she knew that sometimes such animosity between family members could fester into something much greater. What would she do without her family? Qi and Lixue were like her own children, except she only had to deal with them when they were behaving, most of the time. Even when they misbehaved, she could just shovel them back to their mom. Oh! But they were four and five this year, they would not be prone to innocent misbehavior anymore. Did they know if they would be benders? Both Jia Li and her sister Maylin had been born benders, like their mother, but Jun (Qi and Lixue's father) was not a bender. He was a well-to-do, middle-class Earth Kingdom farmer with a few bending farmhands and family members.
Chewing her nails anxiously, something that Jia was trying so hard to cure herself of, she began to pace the floor at the entrance of her little herbal shop. She'd set a "CLOSED" sign just outside so that she and her family would be uninterrupted, but now she wished she'd remained open until their arrival just so that she could be busy. Would the children make a mess of her shop? Should she put the vials of herbs and remedies higher up on the shelves? Taking a deep breath suddenly, Jia paused in her pacing to cup her cheeks in either hand. "Calm down, Ji-li. They're just your family."
Swallowing with some bit of difficulty, she bent water from a pitcher across the room into her empty glass where it sat on the window sill. The old maid had been right, little things like that kept her sharp as she quite nearly spilled the water against the wall behind her, distracted by her anxiety. Heaving a frustrated sigh at herself, she cracked her knuckles before turning toward the window to lift the glass of cool liquid to her lips. The change of temperature on her tongue soothed her mind, and the aggitated exhale before changed to one of relaxation. Everything would be fine. What had she to worry about? It wasn't like she'd changed much - it was the kids who would have grown up!
There was only a brief knock at the door for warning, probably Jun making some attempt to be proper before his wife barged through without further hesitation. Her large, round brown eyes swept the shop before finding the form of her younger sister and she swept forward instantly. "JI-LI!" Giggling with unrepressed joy, she pulled her stunned sister into her arms for a warm squeeze as the children came rushing forward as well, their cries of "Auntie Ji-li!" mingling with the excited jabber of the reunited sisters.
Jun laughed lowly before leaning against the frame of the door, one brow arched as he watched his animated wife speak with her sister, slowly drawing the younger girl out until she was just as animated as Maylin. The crazy ancient woman who Jia had apprenticed to had no doubt driven her into this calmer state, but it was obvious that now that she was free, Jia-li would be just like her sister again in no time. Shaking his head as his daughters began to bound about the shop in their excitement, he let his eyes dart back towards his wife just to be sure she was still alright. No one would notice just yet, but a life was growing in her. He could possibly have a son within the year. Maylin was bursting to tell her sister the news, and she was the only one Jun was allowing her to tell. Not even their children knew yet. Things were too risky, there was no use getting their hopes up.
When her dark brown eyes met him, he nodded curtly before moving forward to gather up the children and shepherd them outside, "C'mon, girls! Let's go get buy some sweets from that vendor we saw up the road. Mama and Auntie need to talk grown up."
Jia-li waved nonchalantly to her nieces, smiling broadly and laughing as she watched them leave and bidding them to bring her back something sweet as well. Once they had left, however, she turned a critical eye to her sister. "What's wrong? Has something happened to Mama and Papa?"
(still in progress, will finish tomorrow)
