Well, what are your interests? As in, what are your favorite movies, anime/manga, TV shows, books, video games, anything? We know Reservoir Dogs is one. What about others?
And, any particular character you are fond of in anything? Like, your all-time favorite character in a particular show or movie?
Maybe that could help you decide. Or, you could be a "simple, generic, scary thing", like a vampire, a ghost, a mummy, a zombie, a witch (lawl), a werewolf, anything like that.
Sorry if that didn't help much, or if I was rambling again. I'm kind of sleepy right now, and I still need to pick out a costume for myself. XD

Favourite animes are Black Cat, Gurren-Lagann, and GetBackers.
Favourite mangas are Battle Royale, D.Gray-Man, Judas.
Favourite TV shoes are MacGyver, M*A*S*H.
Favourite books are Velocity, The Good Guy, and Odd Thomas.
Favourite video games are Armored Core 3, Monster Hunter, Killer 7, Disgaea 2, and Super Smash Bros Melee.
Favourite fruit is a pineapple, favourite food is perogy.
Favourite bands are Iron Maiden, Nine Inch Nails, Mindless Self Indulgence, HIM, QOTSA.
Favourite characters from anything.... uhm... MacGyver, Dean Koontz, Mido Ban, Mr. Pink, Vincent Vega, Billy Wiles, Odd Thomas, Tim Carrier, Sven, Kawada Shogo, Mimura Shinji, Sugimura, Nanahara Shuuya.

I tried being a ghost once. I used a while sheet. D: Only downfall to that halloween was people thought I was a KKK member. >_<: Not kidding either. I was about 11 too.
