I've noticed that alot of Wai-Loli outfits seem to have a bit shorter skirts. is this acceptable? I have several pictures of wai-loli style as I'm attempting making something similar and I was confused about the length of the skirt, as most Lolita skirts are knee length. I just don't want to make it wrong and wind up looking awful.
Also, how acceptable is it for a lolita to have a visible tattoo? I got one a while back, before I discovered the lolita style, and although I know that the shirts will cover it up when I'm dressed in lolita (it's on my back) I'm scared it might show through a shirt or something. So really I'm asking what would be the proper thing to do about this. I"m definetly not going to get it removed. But anyway, perhaps a picture would help this a little? it's just the design I took, as it's rather hard to get a picture of your back. blaugh

I have the middle heart and crown right now, but I'm thinking of getting the tribal wings aswell.

well for starters, I just want to let you know that wa-lolita is very hard to pull off. Avoid bright colors (atleast for a first attempt) and shiny material as much as possible. I assume you've been using bodyline pictures as reference since they can get quite short. If you check the Handbook (scroll down that page) you'll see they're rather long skirts. The longer the skirt the better it looks imo. There's only a few pictures and the original guide has a lot of bad links but it's a very good place to gather information.

As for tattoos, I've never had mine show through my clothes no matter how thin my shirt was. I also have one on the back of my neck and when I wear pigtails it's visible. now if I wanted to conceal it, I could always use stage make-up. I don't choose to conceal it though. I like it and even though it's covered more often than not be it by my hair or a choker, I still don't mind if it shows because it's pretty and I still get compliments on it and well, it's apart of my skin, like a birthmark.
I wouldn't go and get a sleeve done but a tattoo isn't a terrible thing for a lolita so long as you keep the option of being able to cover it. If you really are concerned with it showing through then wear an undershirt but again, I've never had a problem with mine.

I did look at the handbook, but it seems that most of the wai-lolita's that I do see all have shorter skirts then other Lolita's. Examples:

I'm wondering if maybe the poofy-ness is giving the illusion of it being shorter then it really is?

I would stick to the handbook's examples. Bodyline's are definitely too short and the 3rd one would be better if it were longer (but it's a drawing). The 1st one I'd have to see with a petti. The second one is way too short and needs a better petticoat. But I'd have to say both the first and the second don't employ a very bell shaped skirt which helps identify it as lolita and not just a lolita inspired yukata. Quite honestly that girl doesn't appear to have any lolita designs (but very nice cosplay outfits) so I wouldn't use her as a reference.
I personally love the designs on this site but I think they're for dolls but would be beautiful on a person.
Also, I'm pretty sure I've never seen a I in wa-lolita (qi-lolita has one though)
all and all I'd say to definitely go with a longer skirt. It doesn't look lolita without the knee length bell shaped skirt.
One should also take into account that the poofier the petticoat the shorted the skirt so you'll want to make the skirt long enough to accommodate that.

the best way to fix a short skirt is to add a row of lace to the bottom. With the right lace you can add a couple more inches.

I have a huge back tatto and sometimes it shows from under white shirts. its not really visable, just like a leakage of colors.
yours is black so its just going to be a grey spot. I dont think anyone would mind, in fact your tatto is kinda loli. lol.

the worst problem your going to have is people mabye thinking its a shadow, mabye a stain. or worse; wanting to see. as long as its covered I dont see how anyone can think its offensive. I mean its your body you can do whatever you want with it and its cool as long as your present yourself in public properly.

and alot of wai skirts just kinda look shorter because of the long sleeves of the top. its an uneven balance so it gets that look. weather or not they are truly shorter? who knows.

I like your tattoo! and thanks, I"ve been wondering that for awhile now, Maybe I'll put that one away for a bit and stew on it.

thanks, but I fixed the problem. I made an under skirt that has lots and lots of frills. it helps give the skirt a bit more of a poof boost, and it looks really cute. but thanks jfor the idea!

Ahhhhh I know what oyu mean.

Okay, first of all this is where you use your imagination.

I recommend looking at this artist who is very popular on DA. She has a very good idea of the wai-loli style <3

I think it is perfectly acceptable for lolitas to have visual tattoos. I have one and plan on getting many more. Some lolita elitists will disagree, but I really don't think you should let a fashion rule your entire lifestyle.

Most elitists don't even live a "lolita lifestyle". And the majority of them are okay when it comes to tattoos.

Agreed. I plan on getting some tattoos when I can afford it. I also have quite a number of piercing, and people are fine with them when I wear lolita.

Also, what is 'wai-lolita?' It's 'WA,' without an 'i.'

Wa loli is very oriental/traditional than the other kinds, so when you dress up as a waloli you have to think of yourself as the 20th century contemporary japanese girl.

The reason i say that is due to historical facts of the west during the 1800s-1900. At this point, some were trying to dress a bit more westenize to be more "modern." I guess the Wa-loli is my view on that.

So think tradition with contemporary so use traditional colors with traditional pint. to begin with, then you can a bit more creative prints as you start to get the hang of it.

ME liking EGL and aristocrat and such, like to stick with the usual red, white, black embroided cloth smile
