Asad drove the end of his spear down onto the ground, deep enough so it could stand erect. It was easier to find and quickly retrieve in the all-too-likely case of an attack during the night hours. The sun had long set and the duo was growing weary from yet another day of travel. Asad really had no where to be. The explorers, or so they called themselves, had made quick work of his village while himself and Tau, or Kayin though the lion’s true name went unknown to him, had been out training. A railroad was to be built, and they were in need of workers. Cheap workers…free workers. He had been fortunate to escape as he did though life was now much harder. He was a talented hunter despite his young age. The savannah made quick work of children though, and even a fourteen-year-old was considered a man at such a tender age. Life was too short in the black continent.
His remaining companion, whom he named ‘Tau’, for it simply meant ‘lion’ in his tongue, sat not too far off grooming one of his paws.
Kayin was a small lion. Thin and raggy in appearance. His mane was thin and short, barely covering his neck and chest though it had grown thicker around the crown of his head in-between his ears. Dwarfed by a life of abandonment as a cub and malnourishment as an adult. He was hardly a hunter. His drooped ears were perhaps the most obvious indicator as to exactly why that was. Deaf. Unable to hear how loud his paws were when he moved through the grass or his bulk trodding closer to prey, he never learned, or could learn, how to move silently without knowledge of how exactly sound worked.
Utomo had hunted for him when he was a cub, him or Hodari. Their mother wanted to be rid of them at first chance though it seemed she didn’t have the heart to outright murder her own offspring. Being born a male had been a crime enough, but to be born a defective male. Utomo had been different as well, his brother often put in that their mother felt they were freaks. Perhaps it was true.
Now the two-legged provided food for him. He was smaller and couldn’t bring down anything too terribly huge. A gazelle at best. Kayin provided protection. While he was incapable of actually hearing danger, he could smell or see it easily. His sense of smell and sight had made up for his lack of hearing and while it crippled him in hunting, he could spot danger right away and alert his companion. In most cases, a male’s roar was enough to detour many foes. Even a small male lion was more than a match for a few hyenas or wild dogs. More than three, however, could fell him…but it wasn’t worth the risk. Not for a predator. He’d surely make quite a few hits before he was brought down and it would cripple the pack.
The lion rumbled pleasantly as the human scratched at his thin mane. Asad was tired, his dark eyes already droopy from exhaustion. His mouth moved and while Kayin was growing quite talented at reading the lips of other beasts, the words meant nothing to the lion. He simply watched until the young man laid himself down for the night. So strange… they slept during the night time. That was kind of a silly habit. Then again, the human tolerated Kayin’s napping during the heat of the day. It made sense! Who wanted to travel under the blaring sun?

Moving through the grasses, Shetani stalked the herd. Though she was inexperienced, she'd watched leopards and other lions. How hard could it be? Moving her paws carefully, the adolescent did her best to not alert them. Her tail twitched a little, orange-gold eyes watching the gazelle. There was a late calf... Perfect target... The brown lioness moved a bit closer, keeping down wind only by pure chance. Hunching down, she leapt out at it. As the gazelle burst into a run, she tailed the two day old fawn. It never had a chance against her.
As she dragged the young gazelle's dead body away, she caught the whiff of the scents of others. Instinct told her to avoid them - She didn't know them, who they were or what they were - But she was curious. Still holding the gazelle, she went to see what it was. As if in some form of companionship, a breeze trailed after her and carried her scent ahead of her. She had no idea how bad that was.

As Asad drifted off to sleep, Kayin righted himself into a sit, glancing around slowly. His mouth was slightly parted to help him taste the air as well as smell it. Blood soon caught his attention. Giving a silent growl, he alerted the boy sleeping not too far off.
Asad stirred but Kayin was already on his feet, ears pressed back as he slowly started forward. Loud and kind of clunky as far as lions went, but still an adult male. He didn't bother calling out for anyone, any response would fall on deaf ears quite literally. It could be a friend, could be a foe. He was never really one to jump to conclusions.

Stopping in a clearing, Shetani perked her ears at the growl. Not a normal sound... Okay, not a GOOD sound. She shrank down in the grass and tried to edge around them, forgetting to drop the gazelle. But she was still curious... Her sense of danger battled with her curiousity, and both seemed to come to a truce. Inching along in as non-threatning a manner as possible, she got a bit closer. Her mind screamed that she'd be attacked, but she ignored it.

Kayin prowled forward, pausing to smell and glance around the area before continuing too much farther. The scent was stronger... a prey animal. Meaning either scavengers or hunters were nearby. He growled a bit again, though he was hardly aware of how aggressive it sounded.
The growls stopped as he spotted the intruder. Both ears rolled up a bit in interest. "...w...who...dere?"
His voice was louder than was really needed, and horribly slurred. However, it was a gentle voice, still youthful and curious.

Peeking at the male, Shetani couldn't help but marvel at his coat. She'd obviously never seen a gray lion, that was for sure. Setting the gazelle down, she licked her lips and called softly, "Just... Just a hunting traveler..." Orange-gold eyes glanced down at the gazelle; she'd caught it easily enough... She could get another. Tail twitching a little, she picked it up again and inched forward. Hopefully the offering of food was clear enough... She could see the lion's travel companion now, and decided it looked to need it a bit more than she did.

Kayin leaned forward, watching her mouth closely as she spoke. It might come off as a bit odd. Most lions would make eye contact or glance otherwise. He didn't answer for a time, mouthing her words slowly to himself until they sunk in. He nodded a bit. The offer of food wasn't nearly as obvious as it should have been, he'd been somewhat distracted.
"Hunt... for the eats." He nodded, "I see." She was kind of young too, already a good hunter. It kind of made him feel slightly silly.
Kayin put a paw on his chest slowly, "I name is... Kayin. Dat.." He pointed back towards Asad, "Is.. he..." He frowned a bit. He'd not named the two-legged. "He... heerlp me."

The lioness nodded, offering the male a smile. "Yes... Hunt for food.. To eat..." She glanced at his friend, eyes filled with wonder and curiousity. Just what WAS he, besides a two-legged? It looked like a babboon... With a short face and no tail. Orange-gold eyes turned back to the male's as she offered another smile. "I am She-" She stopped. No.. She was no devil... That was highly innapropropriate... "Nasim." It would do... For now.

Kayin smiled pleasantly and nodded at her introduction, of course after he'd watched her talk for a time and pieced it together in his mind. "Nasim." He repeated slowly, then nodded again. "Good to meet. No see many othler lions." He cleared his throat, not the best statement to say really. They were pride animals, often longing the companionship of others.
"No fraid of him." He nodded back to Asad, "He onrly cub to his kin. They get big." He raised a paw to further illustrate his point.

The lioness nodded, then looked back at the two-legged. "What is he...? I have never seen one before..." She dared to move closer, eyes on the strange creature. She looked over at Kayin, ears twitching only a little. "Is he safe to go near?" She could just imagine him getting bigger, but did they grow manes like lions?

Kayin glanced back to Asad, slowly getting himself up and flicking his tail behind him. "Friendly... if you shrlow... you friend too."
He demonstrated by walking himself over to Asad slowly, nudging his nose into the boy's hand with a soft grunt. Asad smiled a bit and ran a hand over the young lion's mane which seemed to make Kayin pretty happy. "They have soft hands."

Shetani tilted her head, then followed suit. First, though... She sniffed at the boy, taking in his scent. It was foreign and intriguing to her, and she wanted to know it better. Upon taking in as much as she cared to, she curiously nuzzled at his other hand. Hopefully he didn't percieve her as a threat.

Asad jumped a bit as the other lion approached him. However, she seemed to have taken Tao's lead. Gentle enough. He smiled a bit and slowly ran a hand along her head and over to scratch behind one of her ears.
Kayin smiled from Asad's other side, "I like that best. Earrr scratch."

A purr rumbled out of the brown lioness' throat, finding that the ear scratching was, indeed, enjoyable. It was better than the thrill of the first kill, in fact, and she lay down, tail curling and paws kneeding at the grass and dirt. She really couldn't think of much more to say, really, as there were no words to express the good feelings. She liked this two-legged, though. The scent of her kill drifted to her and she suddenly remembered it, getting up and retrieving it. In a show of good-will and lack of ill-intent, she nudged it at the boy's hand.

Asad found amusement in the lioness' behavior. It seemed even wild lions had a soft spot for a gentle hand. "There, that's a girl." He cooed, glancing between her and Kayin. The male was grinning ear to ear, having taken a seat for himself not too far off.
At the offering of the kill, Asad wasn't sure what to do for a moment. Taking something from a lion wouldn't be the wisest thing in the world but it seemed she was offering it to him. "Well thank you." He said quietly, lowering the kill to the ground. Well, he'd better make use of it.
Asad set to work on skinning and gutting the kill, he'd cook it up so the three of them could enjoy it. Which...might look strange to the lioness. He used what looked like a stone claw to open the kill's belly rather than his fangs or 'paws'.
Kayin came up beside the lioness, taking a seat once more, "He...gonna fire the eets. Makes it better."
