We had Jazz Band auditions two weeks ago, I tried out with my Alto sax, and I found out that I made it in! <3
But here's the catch: I'm listed as a Bari sax player.
And my teacher meant it to be like that.
gonk

I tried playing it today, but I couldn't go lower than F. I've heard that on the Bari, you needed more air and make your embouchure loose, but I kept on squeaking and got bad tone quality.

Fellow saxophone players... any tips?

Thanks in advance. <3

Well, I dont play bari or sax for that matter, but you do need to loosen your bottom lip and do lots of breathing exercises. like long tones. they help.

A breathing exercise I do everyday so I can produce a good vibrato is lay on my back, put several heavy books on my stomach and blow continuously in short, whooing intervals. I can't describe it. But anyways, I just loosen my lower lip and use my diaphram on the low notes. well, you're supposed to usethe diapram, not your lungs to begin with, but yea, that's how I would handle that.

My friend plays it! She plays tenor sax, but they asked her to play bari for some certain band...

It's true. You have to loosen your jaw; "drop" it. But that makes the higher notes easier. wink And yes, blow with more open air, with your cheeks not as tight as you would play the alto sax.

Go alto saxs!

What you need, is soft reeds. For smaller instruments, the higher the reed number is, the better the quality, but not for low reeds. To get a big sound, I use Rico Royals, 2 1/2. Also, remember all the rules about embouchure? Forget them. All you have to do is blow, keep your lower jaw still, and set your mouth on the mouthpiece wherever it feel comfortable. Another thing, always check for loose screws, wires, springs and keys. On something that big, little things that go wrong can really affect the horn, and you may not be able to find the source right away.
Hope I helped a little!

You HAVE to keep your mouth loose. Keep that bottom lip dropped, yo.

Okay more air is good but not exactly what you problem is.
The mouthpiece is much bigger and thus you have to think about it in that way.
Dont change your emboucher at all keep it the same as you play the alto just make it bigger adjusting to the size of the mouthpiece.
I have no idea what your emboucher is like so i cant really give you real good advice besides that.
Blow away and use more air.
When you practice it just push more air through your diaphragm and hold a note.
Think about what you do when you play that low Bb on your alto it's kind of the same on bari.
NEVER overblow but always use more air.

i play bari sax and the low notes take practice to hit it. u need to relax more and maybe blow a little more air. u need a bigger reed and mouthpiece. and maybe a bigger metal thing*forgot what thats called* sweatdrop
i can play lower than F but my friend can't so i help him. u can practice the low notes and since alto and bari r in the same key it shouldn't be to hard. 3nodding hope this helps a little
