"To prevent truancy, we've invested in a better teacher for you, Esen." The sandbender's father explained to her as he walked with her to the place where her lessons will be. He had his hand on her shoulder, half as a way to comfort her and half to keep the often troublesome teen from simply scampering off as she was known to have done in the past. She had a very unpleasant look on her face, and walked with her arms crossed over her chest.

'To prevent truancy?' Esen thought to herself grumpily. 'My father would have never used the word truancy -- if it weren't for all this money.' She was quickly upsetting herself, and accidentally let out an exaspirated "Ugh."

"Hopefully," her father began, looking patiently upon his irrational daughter, "Hopefully our money-spending will guilt you a little. You have so much potential, Esen, and I don't want it to go to waste!"

"Daddy, my potential is going to waste every second that I'm not back home in the Si Wong. I can't bend solid earth! Who would want to?" Countered Esen.

He gave his daughter a stern look. "You know that's nonsense. You just need practice. And I've heard good things about the teacher we've gotten you."

"Okay." Esen said with a sigh. Admittedly, she didn't like talking back to her parents - there were times, though, that she felt that she could only take her respect for her elders so far.

Father and daughter needed only walk a few more paces before they were outside the gates of the school where Esen would be taking her lessons. "Can I trust you to stay here, on your own?" Her father asked, earnestly. "I need to get home and tend to some things."

Esen was tempted to say no, but she could sense a massive guilt trip would come if she did. "Yes, Daddy. I'll try out lessons, today - for you."

"Thank you." Replied the aging man with a smile. "Don't go to the markets after your classes. I don't want you late for dinner."

"Right, right." Esen groaned in reply. Her father smiled, again, and headed on his way. When he was out of sight, Esen passed through the gates and into an open courtyard where earthbending students were practicing.

Rook's headcount for students had shot up fast. Most of them were younger kids that his wife, when she'd owned the place, had refused to even look at, let alone teach.

They were all worthy students in his opinion, but he was human and had his favorites. His favorites, and ones he was more interested in than others. A sandbender, was it? Only recently had Rook discovered there was a special group just for that. Sandbending was Earthbending as far as he was concerned.

The man was dressed in all browns today as an attempt to be more welcoming to his not-so-welcoming student. Seeing Esen enter, he strolled on over. "Hey, hey! You must be Esen!"

She dropped her cranky act quickly. Distracted from her foul mood by her surprisingly handsome teacher. "Yeah. That's right." She replied as smoothly as she could manage while simultaneously thinking, 'At least he's cuter than the last one.'

Esen had originally intended to be as difficult as humanly possible, but now she felt as though maybe it would be worth it to only be as difficult as she normally was.

"You'd be my teacher, then? Master Rook, right?" She pushed her hair back with her hand.
