I saw it in San Francisco and thought it was very good. I don't really agree with the concept of a "jukebox musical," but I thought that they did this one correctly as more of a biography musical. Besides, the music of Frankie Vallie and the 4 Seasons lends itself well to the theatre. It's in San Francisco still and playing in Sacramento right now. Has it already played in LA?
Sad story - In the production, as they switch narrators they show a Lichtenstein-esque picture of a season (Spring to Summer to Fall to Winter). I didn't get why they did this until 2 hours afterwords where I had a verbal "I get it now!" moment. I originally thought it was only because of the progression of time and didn't get that it was because of the group name...

I did not see it, but my mother did. She hated it.
She said if you like the 4 seasons, see it because that is the only appeal the show had. There apparently was no set, average costumes, average lighting, and they cursed so much that it bordered on being in bad taste. Her exact quote was "Almost every other word was '********' and it didn't need to be."

Of course, the reason that they said '********' every other word is because that's what people expect out of Italians from New Jersey. But if you like The Four Seasons, the music is well done.

I loved it. I saw it in Seattle a few weeks ago. It was truly amazing. The thing about their being 'no set' is that it's a basic set of stairs with an upper layer and ladders in the background, then the set comes in from that. Tiny bits of sets, like desks, signs, all sorts of things come in to make the set. It's what makes it so cool, they change the scene so quickly that you really have to be with the show to understand whats going on, which for me is fun. They do swear a ton but thats how these people apparently talked back then. The music of course was fantastic, and the singers were great. The lighting was also quite fantastic. But thats just this theatre, great theatre.

I haven't seen it, and I don't really plan to, but my fiance got me a book about the show and the group for Christmas this year, and what I've read so far has been okay.

It's played in the Los Angeles area twice - last summer and last fall. I got to see the performance over in Costa Mesa with the same LA cast at the Ahmanson.
It's no surprise that "********" is used every other word. It's to keep the authentic Jersey dialect (lol!). Also to emphasize these kids were blue collars and at times, not the brightest.
It's one of my all time favorite shows. It's highly underrated. I think it's better than most shows that are deemed popular by my peers. While the whole "jukebox" concept is getting old, this actually works for the show. When you think about it, most jukebox shows are fictional storylines set to the music of whomever. I like how JB is executed because you're actually getting the story about the Four Seasons with their music in the show.
I also like the minimal sets. It really shows that you can still be an awesome show and not rely too much on falling chandeliers (I love Phantom, mind you!).
