Okay, I'm not sure if I know it so well myself, but I'll try to explain.
Okay, first, you have a DM, or dungeon master. The dungeon master is the player who spawns enemies, makes cities, chooses events, he/she is basically like God. The dungeon master is not always the leader of the heroes, though.
The heroes, I think you can choose between warrior, paladin, sorcerer, bowman, wizard, barbarian, bard, and there are a few more. The races can reach from gnome, dwarf, elf, human, undead, orc, and there are probably some more. You can usually have more than one character per person, though. It all depends on what the DM chooses.
The dungeon master should lay out some rules. First since this is an RP, as the hero you can choose some of the things, but not like the very important events. The number one rule usually is: No cheating or godmodding. It ruins the game and makes it boring to play. And Dungeons and dragons is fantasy, so usually you can't have SMGs, Rocket Launchers, cocaine, Hi-def TVs. But the DM can say there can be, It could be like a prototype or something. If you want me to explain further more, I would be more than glad to. But still, I'd be more than happy to DM with you. =]

Actually, there are over 40 classes & 30 races to choose from now... But if you really want to play, check out the topic D&D Learner's Game, it's in this forum, & a bunch of us can teach you how to play.

My brother a good DM(But sadly he will be in the Navy soon) I know another person that could be an excellent DM but he doesn't feel he would be. I know a few people that would play, but we play over MSNM.
