The tome before you belongs to Sosiqui and Pyroxene. There is a seal surrounding the book, one that allows you to leaf through the pages but prevents you from adding anything. The enchantment is strong and cannot be broken so easily, if at all. So just sit back and enjoy the Tall Tale that is unfolding before you. You can visit the Stationery Store to find out how you can write your own Tall Tale.

Huni Pi The lights flickered, as if chiding Sosiqui for her impatience. Eventually the letters had re-arranged themselves and settled quite nicely on the pages. A few fragments faded here and there until the only words that remaind on paper was:
"What hope is there for broken things?"
A drawer suddenly pulled open, and inside were pens with a small hourglass embedded inside them. Yes, gone was the quill and the inkwell, the Study and Tome were trying to update themselves it seemed. Sosiqui Sosiqui tilted her head quizzically as the book stopped its schizophrenic alphabet-soup-spewing and settled down, then jumped when the desk stuck a drawer in her direction. ... The pens were nice, though, she had to admit, and she picked one up to study it more carefully. She had quite a weakness for hourglasses. It was only after the pen was in her hand that she stopped to actually read the question left alone on the Tome's open page. "What hope is there for broken things?" Sosiqui paused. The room suddenly seemed... expectant. Waiting for something. For what? An answer? She didn't like writing on books. It was just Not Done, but the drawer and the pens and the question was as close to an open invitation as she'd ever seen. Sosiqui took a deep breath and bent over the tome. The question, the room, the hourglasses - whoever had crafted this had known the buttons to push. It would have been disconcerting if it hadn't been for the friendly, harmless invitation the room offered her. What hope is there for broken things? She wrote the answer. Two works, quickly. There. Done. "Only time." Huni Pi The moment the ink dried upon the paper, unseen clocks began to ring. Cuckoo clocks chirped and squawked as bells rang and timers buzzed. And just as quickly as the sounds sprang to life, they died down.
Loud, heavy thuds followed. And with each dull sound, an actual time piece appeared around Sosiqui. They fell, one on top of another, piling up but never quite surrounding the kairomancer completely.
Once the heap had stopped growing (mainly because it nearly reached the ceiling), you'd think things were over. But no, there was one final surprise in store for Sosiqui. Sosiqui "What the..." Sosiqui turned around in a slow circle as a cacophony of clock alarms and chimes filled the air. When the first timepiece fell, she drew her wand quickly and backed away... but they surrounded her, building up in a ticking wall around her. Don't panic. They're just clocks... so far. She forced herself to stay calm until suddenly, everything stopped. Huni Pi There came a bright, blinding, flash of light. The sound of the fabric of time being unzipped can be heard followed quickly by its closure. A small oomph, and a sudden squeak of surprise echoed throughout the room.
One by one, the heaps of broken clocks started to disintegrate into dust, until the entire room was filled with sand. And more was pouring up from the ceiling. The walls had taken an odd sheen.
It takes mere seconds to realize the room had turned into a giant hourglass. Would it have been a coincidence that this hourglass was within a pen as well?
The small cry was heard again, and in the distance a small figure struggled to pull itself out of the sand. Sosiqui Sosiqui's skin crawled as the unmistakable sensation of someone manipulating the local timestream washed over the room. And they weren't doing a very good job of it - like hacking randomly with a blunt ax when a single swipe with a sharp razor would do the job. As the clocks started to disintegrate, she swore under her breath and brought a shield up around her. The magic fizzed only lightly, though, interacting solely with the dust and not blocking an aging manipulation, as she'd feared. As the entropic wave ended, she let the shield drop. Hourglass..."Ack! Plft! Blub! I di'nt... di'nt say DESERT, ya stupid..." came a flailing cry from across the sandy pile, and Sosiqui's eyes widened in surprise. The trace of time manipulation hovered over there, and she slogged through the sand only to find... "Oh. Hey. Who's you?" A young girl, very young - four? five? - peered up at her from the sand she'd been flailing in, her eyes round with curiosity. The faint sizzle of time was all over her, centered in the odd, humming metallic backpack she was wearing. "I mean. Um. Crap. Cloak fun'shun! CLOAK!" She banged on the backpack with one flailing hand, but it just let out a fizzle and a lowering whine. The hum died with a wheeze. "Craaaaaaap," the girl moaned. "Were you... did you..." Sosiqui managed. Was that a time machine? Was this a FIVE YEAR OLD WITH A TIME MACHINE??? Oh, we couldn't be having with this. Huni Pi With the backpack's seeming 'demise', so too was the odd flux of time and space. The sand began to swirl around the child and the woman, swallowing them far too quickly for either to react. They were both deposited or rather lowered gently back into the Study, just at the foot of the writing table.
The leatherbound Tome was gone, replaced by a smaller one bound in green leather. Embossed on the cover in gold leaf was
Pyroxene by Sosiqui

Name: Pyroxene Centauri A.K.A.: Pyro, Agent Five of Project Mnemosyne!! o_oV~!Gender: Female Age: Six Image Song: Caramelldansen!Likes: Time travel, theoretical physics, computers, machines, history, reading, video games, puzzles, cotton candy <- GIMME!!, cheeze-whiz, pizza, timeline stability. Dislikes: Being time-grounded, Kurrin, art class, the Project's First Rule, unstable timelines, camping, celery, organized sports, tuna fish. <- Ewwww!Personality: Pyroxene is a little spitfire, a tomboy with an incredible hyperactive streak and absolutely insatiable curiosity about everything. She's bouncy and almost maniacally cheerful. Pyro devours books at a ridiculous rate, but is too excitable and loud to do well in school. <- HEY!! That's lies! She wants to know the hows and whys of everything, and examines even the most plain everyday objects with a methodical analysis. She especially adores studying history and archeology, and - for some reason - theoretical physics. She's good at math and a whiz with machinery in ways that absolutely boggle her poor Author. <- Pyro is awesome! :DAbilities: Pyroxene has no magical powers. Instead, her talents revolve around her knowledge of machinery, computers, and mathematics. Her greatest skill is her ability to work with and understand/create advanced technology - and, of course, maintain and use the Mnemosyne. I don't get this 'magic' stuff. Betcha it's all hocuspocus and nothin' else!Special Possessions: Pyroxene's most important possession is, naturally, her time machine - the Mnemosyne. (See its post for details.) The silvery device is never far from her by choice, though her Author does try and keep them separated for fear that the girl will rampage through history and leave havoc and unstable timewaves in her wake. I DO NOT!!!Her other most cherished object is her stuffed pegasus, Arthur. There's nothing special about the toy, but Pyro sleeps with it in her bed every night, and sometimes talks to it. Aw, man... why you gotta tell 'em everything? Maaaan...

Name: Sosiqui to Aeina Gender: Female Age: 26 Species: Human Profession: Sole owner and operator of 'Just In Time', a temporal retrieval and research service to help other people locate lost objects and information - for a small fee, that is. Likes: Kairomancy, videogames, solving mysteries, her family, reading fantasy novels, more videogames, hourglasses, truffles, fancy cheeses. Dislikes: Focusing on her past, housework, irresponsibility, her tendency to laziness, mathematics, broccoli. Personality: Sosiqui has an intense personality - which works both for her, and against her. On the plus side, she's fiercely protective, quick (and often sharp) witted, extremely determined, and doesn't give up on people easily. She tends to do most things (except cleaning the house) with an enthusiasm that sometimes borders on obnoxious. On the negative side, she has quite a temper, is frequently impatient, and can be overly controlling. Sosiqui is pretty imaginative, but tends to leave many projects unfinished. She does enjoy writing - in the form of her long-kept journal - and art, in the form of weaving, one of her favorite hobbies and former means of making a living. Her favorite distraction is her PS2, which she will defend wildly if threatened. Although Sosiqui has been through quite in bit in her past, she's happy now. She loves her family - odd and mismatched though it may seem - and has poured much of her Gaian life and focus into her various children... for good or for ill. She would do anything to prevent her life from changing again. Abilities: Sosiqui is a kairomancer, a mage of true Time. The art of kairomancy is one step up from chronomancy, which is only very simple time magic. While chronomancy is small-scale temporary manipulation of personal time from within, kairomancy can be large-scale, permanent, and can influence entire timestreams if it's powerful enough. Kairomancy can even release the mage from the flow of time itself, allowing them to operate outside the constraints of the constant forward movement of a timestream. Kairomancy is a magic that cannot be learned - it must be innate, and it is rare. All kairomancers are also masters of the lower-level chronomancy. A kairomancer's connection to their power comes from Time itself. Kairomancers see Time as an energy that is very nearly sentient, and in order to complete their power they attract, make a pact with, and bond with a filament of Time personified. This filament becomes their personal power, their gateway to the energies they manipulate. Without this bond of power, no magic can be done. Some kairomancers choose to also bind familiars to themselves to strengthen their magic and to serve as an anchor for their sanity should they be working with the deepest, most dangerous magic; however, this is not required. Sosiqui has two familiars, Chronos and Shangri. Kairomancy spells operate on several levels, with the first level being basic chronomancy. The higher the spell level, the more difficult it is to cast and the more energy it requires. Below is a listing of all the standard kairomancy spells - more exist, but they are personal and designed by one mage, and not shared. Anything written in small text is a spell that Sosiqui either has very low skill in, or cannot perform at all (marked with a *). Basic Chronomancy Spells History Scry: Can see the history of any object or person in a dish of appropriately prepared liquid. The depth and accuracy of that history depends on the mage's skill. Future Scry: Can see flickers of possible futures for living beings. The depth and accuracy of the premonitory visions depends on the mage's skill.Temporal Summon: Calls an object from the past, temporarily. The object summoned must be an artifact of the past, not from the future. The amount of time the object remains depends on the mage's power. Temporal Illusion: Casts the illusion of a past appearance on the target. Mostly used as a cheap disguise spell or for the appearance of youth. Revert: Rewind time for no more than thirty seconds. The caster's memory of the 'missing' original thirty seconds will remain. (Kairomancers can 'chain' Revert spells to jump back in time if they wish, though it is taxing and if one wishes to go back more than 15 minutes, it's more energy-efficient to use the Time Traverse spell.) Advanced Chronomancy Spells Stasis: Throws the target temporarily into stasis. This spell lasts for five minutes at most, usually less, but during the time of the spell's effect the target is completely locked still in time. Age Effect: Speeds up the effects of time on the target, forcing them to feel the effects of rapid aging. This spell is used for both offense (to age into decrepit age) and defense (for younger mages to age into a more powerful/hale older self, for example) and is temporary. Youth Effect: Reverses the effects of time on the target, forcing them to feel the effects of rapid reverse growth. This is a very versatile spell. An older mage may cast it on themselves to temporarily take on the attributes of a younger age, or they may cast it on the enemy to make them feel the effects of an age far too young to handle the battle they are involved in. It is also temporary. Temporal Slow: Slows down the flow of time in a localized area, temporarily. Usually cast on an opponent to slow their reflexes and actions. Temporal Haste: Speeds up the flow of time in a localized area. Usually cast on the mage to enhance their apparent reflexes and movement speed. Temporal Freeze: Temporarily freezes the target in time. Lasts only 30 seconds maximum. Temporal Bolt: Throws small bolts of temporal energy at the target. Offensive spell. These bolts are SMALL and do not affect the target's personal time aside from a bit of jitter and light-headedness. And pain, of course. Mid-Level Kairomancy Spells Time Reverse: The enhanced version of Youth Effect, this spell permanently reverses the effect of time on the target at a dramatic rate. Although the target cannot be aged past their time of birth, reducing an opponent to an infant state is obviously a good offensive tactic. However, Time Reverse is not permanent - the target will continue to age normally after the spell's influence is gone. Kairomancers are frequently asked to cast this spell on others to grant a sort of conditional immortality. Time Accelerate: The enhanced version of Age Effect, this speeds up the effects of time at a dramatic rate. Frequently, this spell is used on opponents to kill them, as they age from a state of health into a pile of rotting dust within a few minutes. Chronostasis: Throws the target into stasis, effectively freezing them in time. The duration of this spell depends on the caster's mastery of time - a true Master Kairomancer could put someone or something into stasis for eternity. Time Traverse: Travel in time. Going to the past is much, MUCH easier than the future. Any traveling to the future could be to any one of a number of possible futures; the future one visits may not be the one that actually occurs. Temporal Cloak: A spell used in time travel to shield the traveler from natives of that time period, to avoid changing history simply by being present. This spell cloaks the user in an echo of the time when the caster was not there. Pure Kairomancy Spells Temporal Transcend*: Removes the caster from the flow of time. Once outside, the kairomancer's ability to time travel and to study the timestream from a distance is dramatically increased. They also will not age while in this state, which can be maintained indefinitely.Temporal Ground*: Places the caster back into the timestream. Opposite of Temporal Transcend. Timestream Scry: Allows the caster to scry a massive amount of the timestream of a world or multiple worlds. Useful for researchers or studies, for identifying patterns and cycles in history, or simply for spying into other worlds. Realmwalk*: Walk the Path of the Burning to different timestreams. The kairomancer HAS to be grounded into their local timestream for this to work; otherwise, bad things can happen... Null Break: Break through the wall of a timestream into Nulltime, the timeless space between all timelines. Nulltime is a harsh environment and it is not wise to remain there for more than a few hours, though skilled kairomancers may remain for longer in order to observe fluctuations in a timestream or simply to hide. Chronochaos: Surrounds the target in violent, chaotic temporal energy. This is the most powerful battle spell that a kairomancer can use. The massive energy unleashed can do unpredictable and terrible things to the target. History: Lordy, it's complicated. Suffice to say that Sosiqui grew up in a subset universe of the same class that Earth is, only one where elemental magic is extremely common and integrated into daily life. Her world recognized five elements, and five mage types to control them. Fire - Pyromancy. Pyromancers often work in heavy industry, as fire-fighters, etc. Anything that involves large quantity of heat or control/production of fire. Air - Aeromancy. Aeromancers primarily work in weather control and management, though some also assist in transportation or even in hospitals to assist with respiratory problems. Water - Aquamancy. Aquamancers work in anything that has to do with water, especially the sea and overseas shipping, assist aeromancers with weather control, and help purify water and work in sanitation. Earth - Geomancy. Geomancers often work in agriculture and mining, as well as deal with safety concerns involving earthquakes and mudslides. Time - Chronomancy. Chronomancers are somewhat rarer than the other four types. They work almost exclusively in an odd form of insurance: cities, businesses and other places may hire chronomancers to stand on guard for mistakes (be it anything from dropping a one of a kind vase to a horrible car accident) and then, immediately as they happen, tweak time to make it never happen. In any case, Sosiqui was a chronomancer. She attended the prestigious 'mancer academy, the Spring of Five Circles, after graduating from high school. However, she discovered there that she was not merely a chronomancer, but had the potential to be an Adept in that field - a rare higher form of chronomancy called kairomancy. That was when Sosiqui learned about the Nexus. At the place where all worlds and times collide is a vast space that takes the form of a tree trunk with infinite branches, in order to make itself understandable to limited, mortal minds. Kairomancers dwell in this space, making sure that the flow of time is maintained and kept whole in as many places as possible. Sosiqui was taken to the Nexus and introduced to her teacher, Aeina, and in kairomancer tradition she discarded her original last name (which she has since forgotten entirely) and took on Aeina's name. Yet in her training, something went wrong. To be fair, it was entirely Sosiqui's fault for being impulsive. It's a very long story indeed, but the net result was that Sosiqui's very soul was shattered and spat out into the disparate timestreams of the new world of Gaia. Each piece landed in a divergent Gaian timeline, losing aspects of personality, memory, and powers in the break. Fortunately - or not, depending on your point of view - this Sosiqui remembers it all, and has managed to regain her powers over time as well. Sosiqui is determined to just live a normal life now, away from the politics and complications of her former life, and to grow beyond the breaking that destroyed it. Sosiqui's Familiars Chronos: Chronos is a time daemon, one of Sosiqui's two familiars that help keep her anchored to one time, place, and reality when she's working really deep kairomancy. He is quiet and practical, the polar opposite of his 'twin' familiar, Shangri. Chronos is stoic and often stands as a beacon of silent support. He is shy around other people that he does not know. Shangri: Shangri is a Fandangle Familiar, a bio-magical-mechanical creature with - in her case - a chameleon spirit. Shangri can shapeshift into many different biomechanical forms and manages the large sprocket army with hyperactive efficiency. Shangri is extremely loud, impulsive, hyper and squealy, but she can be counted on in a crisis.

Immediate Family Kurrin: Kurrin is an anthropomorphic platypus child from the Fourth Wall adoption center. After Riven moved out, Sosiqui's empty-nest syndrome swayed her into taking Kurrin into her home. The young platypus is originally from a dimension that is dying - her real parents passed her through a rift in time-space to the Fourth Wall center in hopes of rescuing her. Kurrin is cranky, crafty and a bit of a handful, but Sosiqui has hopes for her just the same. Right now, Kurrin goes to school at a boarding school especially for anthropomorphic beings, and she's grown a bit distant from her 'human' family. She is not around very much. Sosiqui isn't entirely sure how she feels about that. Five: This little black mage was rescued from an alternate Gaian timeline, one inhabited by another fragment of Sosiqui's soul - one that was being slowly driven mad by the kairomancer powers she couldn't control. This desperate piece, known only as One since she forgot her real name, bought Five, a mage-construct created for use as a companion (or a weapon, or whatever) as her only friend. When Sosiqui traveled to that timeline with Aeina's help, she rescued One by merging their souls together again, thus regaining her former power over time. She also gained Five, who she took in as her ward. Five lives in a converted shed in the backyard, which is enough of a small house for him. Five is shy, vulnerable, and eager to please. (He also bears an odd resemblance to Vivi from Final Fantasy IX, despite being totally unrelated - something Sosiqui finds deeply amusing.) tr0ll: Who's this? Not yet in continuity! Extended Family Riven & Ghlyssa: Riven was Sosiqui's first 'adopted child' that she raised after coming to Gaia. He is a Fa'e, a mystical being reborn; the Spiritkeeper. Riven is a mature and balanced personality, a quiet leader and arbitrator with a calm nature and a steady hand. He and Sosiqui are close and he comes to visit his Guardian often. Ghlyssa is naive, kind, gentle, a bit socially inept, and - to Riven's mind - absolutely wonderful. They were engaged in February of 2005, and have a daughter, Airyn. Riven and Glee live together in the Glade, a home made out of living trees by Ghlyssa's power. Airyn: Riven and Ghlyssa's daughter. She was conceived through non-biological means and is thus fully mundane, not Fa'e in the least. Airyn is a generally cheerful, curious child - vivacious around those she knows, shy (but easy to draw out) among those she doesn't. Airyn is also developing artistic talent, and loves to draw and paint, although she's still a bit shy about showing off her talents. She has made a pact with a demon (her best friend, Astarte) to gain the ability to draw pictures that will then come to life. Distant Relations Aeina: A kairomancer of the Nexus, Aeina is Sosiqui's teacher and mentor from when she was an apprentice kairomancer - hence why Sosiqui bears Aeina's name. Aeina appears to be in her upper fifties, although she's actually much older because of the common kairomancer ability to function and live outside of the flow of time. She is quiet, wise and has a lot of common sense - and a tendency to smack said sense into people when she feels they lack it. Interestingly, Aeina has developed a sense of apathy to everything but those close to her, out of self-defense - serving as a kairomancer, especially a highly ranked one, is a very difficult job, and one that involves many hardships. She has a large soft spot for Sosiqui, though, and cares for her former student deeply (perhaps, partially, because she feels that Sosiqui's soul-breaking was her fault). Although Aeina doesn't show up often, being busy with concerns in the Nexus, when she does come it's usually a happy occasion. Sosiqui looks on Aeina as almost a mother figure.

The Mnemosyne Device: What appears to be a small, backpack-sized, honest-to-god time machine. It's currently broken, to Pyroxene's extreme distress. Arthur: A small, cuddly pegasus plushie that Pyroxene brought with her. She is fond of talking to it right before she goes to sleep.

Pyroxene's room is in the 'tower' portion of Sosiqui's small cottage. Right now there isn't much in it that belongs to her, as she's still under the impression that her time in Gaia is a short pit stop...

Pyroxene's Color Code: Credits: Tall Tales belong to Huni Pi and Syrie; thank you for letting me play in your playground! Pyroxene is drawn by Klaine. Pyro's character and concept belong to Sosiqui. Take or copy and be thrown into the Cretaceous by a raging timestorm! Rules: Please do not post in this thread for any reason without asking me first. ^^ Special Thanks: Zero Dream and Cerena, for inadvertently giving me the opportunity to get Pyroxene! Prolixity, for tempting me in the direction of the Tales, enabling my decision, and listening to my brainstorming. pyroxene: not a 'tall tale', has extreme trouble dealing with the idea that the world sees her as some magically summoned thing, she has her own memories that really don't dovetail with the tome. she has parents, has a civilization, etc. has trouble dealing with magic, period. toddler-> kid thing being a flip-out about this?
at kid stage the mnemosyne will finally get fixed w00t
sprockets aren't magic, they're energy, not the same thing. neh.
enemy going to break this timestream too?
