Time: time is different and is broken up into Nights and Days (Nights are when the stars are out [there is no moon] and Days are when the sun is out), and in cycles
there are:
three Night sections (each about 10 hours long)
two Day sections (each about 8 hours).

bells ring:
once for First Night (ending Second Day)
twice for Second Night (ending First Night)
three times for Third Night (ending Second Night)
four times for First Day (ending Third Night)
five times for Second Day (ending First Day)

(First Night to First Night is one cycle)
(Market Days are every six cycles)
(a direl is twenty cycles)
(a year is considered ten direls)

Market Days are every six cycles and people bargain for goods there. they last during First and Second Day.
traders enter the city every four Market Days (twenty-four cycles) to bring news of the Outer World and bring goods to bargain for.

Places: there are two parts of the world in this story, the Inner City and the Outer World

the Outer World is comprised of hills, mountains and rivers; basically everything that isn’t in the city. it's viewed by the citizens of the Inner City as a sort-of fairy tale land of freedom and plenty. in reality, it's lush and green with ruins spotting the area. there are bands of nomadic people living here and other Cities.

the Inner City is a decrepit version of any big city. there are tall buildings, houses, schools, but none are used for anything but sleeping and gathering in. there are stoves and light switches, but there is no electricity for the citizens; they run on oil and fire. people are controlled by the leaders and their Hunters who terrorize the citizens. the Hunters have electric guns (like stun guns, only deadly). the leaders live in mansions or castles and keep slaves.
