The Room The doors in the entry room are marked with numbers, from one to three. You step through the third door. The middle of this room is dominated by a large copper sphere, floating in midair. A small platform is directly beneath it.
Around the room there are few chairs and desks, in fact, most of the space here is free to leave room for practice. Human-sized dummies are in the room, with imitations of wands in their hands. They can be engaged in combat to test the students. When the spell “Incurso” is cast on them, they will move, dodge and protect themselves while trying to disable the caster with a paralyzing spell attack. If they disable the caster or the command spell “Claudeo” is cast on them, they will stop.
Inside the sphere lies the gauntlet. A training exercise where students are required to face animated dummies, simulating monsters and enemy wizards, and a variety of other obstacles. To enter, they must stand in the platform beneath the sphere and speak the command word “Orsus”. They will then be transported inside, and all of the action will be visible on the sphere. Should any students became hurt or incapacitated they will be transported back out straight away. If they reach the middle they will also be transported back. If they give up or the teacher decides the exercise is over, any one of them needs only cast the spell “Trado”.

First Lesson Already waiting inside the room, Owen was sitting down, watching the students come in. When he felt there were enough of them, he spoke.
"Good afternoon class, I am Professor Owen Avery-York, and I will be your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.
First off, I’d like to clarify a few things about this class. I will not teach you dark arts, but solely the means one can use to defend against them. I’m certain some of you thought that was what this class was about, but you are wrong. You will learn protection spells and counter-spells. You will learn about dark creatures and what to do if you come face to face with one. You will learn how to brew effective antidotes to help others. And ultimately, should it come to that, how to do battle and survive. That is the purpose of this class.
Second, I’d like to explain to you what exactly the Dark Arts are. While some magic is particularly good, such as the patronus spell, or evil like the most curses. The vast majority of it is neutral, and so, being evil alone doesn’t make it a dark art.
The most common thing you’ll have to deal with is Dark Magic, spells that have a physical effect besides the magic. Most notably these are curses that hurt, tamper with people minds or ultimately… Kill.
The difference lies in the intent of the wizard or witch that wields it. That so, even should a person cast an unforgivable curse, it doesn’t mean he or she is using the dark arts. It all comes down to the true and genuine intentions of the caster.
That is a difficult distinction to make at times. To distinguish when what someone is doing is acceptable, or is using the dark arts. Understanding this is of key importance for witches and wizards. Especially ones so young like you. By the time you leave this school, it is my hope that you’ve become able to tell the difference. But for now, it’s still not your job to do so yet.
One more thing before we continue with the class. To be prepared against the dark arts, it is vital that one is in top mental and physical shape. That means lots of reading and exercise. I strongly suggest you do both as some of my evaluations will test both of those abilities. Well then, let’s get on with the class."
Turning to the black board, the Professor started talking, writing and sometimes drawing things. Using up the first half of the class, he spoke about potions and spells."
"Now then" He finally said at the begining of the second part. "These are the things you will use to practice" he said, walking over to the potions cabinet.
"The Sixth Years, will take several potions and use the Specialis Revelio spell to identify it's ingredients. It will not tell you what the potion does, but it is a start. And for the more daring among you, I used a very strong spell to lock the stoppers in the potions and an alarm on the door that will ring, loudly, should you try to smuggle any out."
He then moved back to the board.
"The Seventh Years will have more fun. I want you to do battle with these dummies. They will defend themselves and try to paralyze you temporarily. The effects will wear off after ten seconds and the dummy will stop itself if it hits, so don't worry. They can also cast protego so beware of that. You'll have to use it themselves and try to hit them with the Incarcerous spell."
"Well, get to it! As this is the first lesson, I will not demand homework, but expect it on the next one. As for now, I'll be going around the room helping where needed. Feel free to call me." Information: Spell - Specialis RevelioSpecialis Revelio (spe-see-AH-lis reh-VEL-ee-oh) Scarpin's Revelaspell
Used to identify the ingredients of the target potion or the enchantments on a target object.
-
Spell - Finite Incantatem Incarcerous (in-CAR-sir-us)
"incarceratus" L., past participle of "incarcerare", from in- + carcer prison
Sends thick ropes out of thin air to wrap around someone or something.
-
You may roleplay the dummy you are dueling with, but no others. The effects are listed in the room description. This lesson will end October 15th.

Kanita swiftly entered the classroom, nodding pleasantly towards Professor Owen. Quickly stepping towards an empty desk and placing her bag on top, she mumbled incoherintally while digging through it.
"Where could that blasted chart be?!" Came a stressed whisper from between her lips.
Sighing in frustration and giving up for the moment, Kani skimmed the directions for the assignment of the day. It was a simple enough task, luckily, for she felt as if her time was being stretched out. With her tutoring students, having perfects duty, studying and keeping up with her own classwork it was as if only a timeturner could give her a spare moment.
Gathering all the potions that needed identifying, she placed them across from herself. Then twirling her wand through the correct motions and enunciating 'Spe-see-Ah-lis reh-VEL-e-oh' precisely, Kani identified each of the potions with ease. Between casting her spells upon the mixtures, she took notes of each potion with her quill. When pleased with the results, Kani disposed of the mess.
Tucking the last potion bottle into the cupboard, she took a deep breath and smiled brilliantly.

Hurrying into the classroom, Beck sent a distracted smile and half wave to Professor Owen as she all but threw her book bag on her desk and sat down with an audible 'thunk.' The day just didn't seem to be going as she'd planned and, as such, she'd nearly been late for class. Nervously, Beck pulled her long hair into a hasty ponytail and vigorously rubbed her face with her hands in a vain attempt to calm her nerves. Taking a deep breath, Beck let it out in a loud and heavy sigh before focusing her attention on the task at hand. Battling dummies...spectacular. That could either make her day much worse or much better. Pulling herself reluctantly out of her chair, Beck grabbed her wand out of her bag and made her way over to the humanlike dummies across the room, waving to Kanita with a small smile as she did. At the moment, they were the only two students in the room.
Approaching a dummy, Beck stood resolutely in front of it, taking another deep breath to calm her nerves as fully as possible before starting the lesson. She muttered a quiet 'incurso' and began moving quickly, firing spells at the dummy and dodging the paralyzing ones sent back from it. Occasionally, she was forced to dodge a few spells of her own when the dummy cast a well placed shield spell.
Battling the dummy was doing wonders for her spirit as she dodged, defended, and attacked, but it was quite evident that Beck's head wasn't entirely in the lesson. In a moment of pure distraction, Beck shouted 'incarcerous!' and while the spell was well placed, she missed the shield spell cast by the dummy entirely. Without warning, Beck stumbled and fell with a surprised squeak as thick ropes quickly wrapped themselves around her body. Shaking her head, grateful that she'd managed to keep her wand in her hand, she mumbled a quiet 'finite incantatem' and pulled herself off the floor, glaring slightly at the dummy which now stood quite still waiting for her to recover. Of course the mishap had been her fault, but that didn't mean she couldn't pretend it was the dummy's.
Feeling that she had accomplished quite a bit and learned a rather valuable piece of information (don't let oneself get distracted by trivial matters in a battle), Beck waved her wand and spoke the counter spell to disengage the dummy. Making her way back over to her desk and plopping down in the seat, she made a few notes for herself about the battle and her performance.

Kanita's famous curiousity took grasp of her as Beck set to work on her own task. Keeping a safe distance, Kani pulled herself onto the counter of a desk, a few rows away from the experimental battle. Tucking her legs beneath her as Beck systematically battled the dummy, Kani found herself silently cheering. Even if it was a demonstrative battle, it still held a bit of excitement as to what would happen.
A dull thud drew Kani's attention quickly to Beck, who was constricted by thick, coarse ropes. Hoping to the floor on the balls of her feet, Kani had her wand out, ready to assist, only to force her raised hand down. She reminded herself that this was for Beck only, and that the girl could handle her own. Seeing with satisfaction as Beck dealt with the matter quickly and efficiently, Kani slung her duffle onto her shoulder and made way for the Gryffindor's direction.
"Now that is what I call an assignment!" Kani cheerfully sang, as she wished her task was more active than simply identifying potions.
Sliding into the spare seat beside Beck and shrugging off the bag from her shoulder, Kani balanced her chair on two legs. The near empty class was a relief and Kani planned to take the few spare moments to catch up with her friend. It seemed they didn't get nearly as much time together as the previous year allowed them.
"How's your housemates this year Beck?" Kani wondered lightly, she herself had barely the time to make herself well introduced to the newest members of her own house, but there would be time for that later.

Beck grinned as Kanita sat in the desk next to her and rocked the chair idly back on two legs, commenting cheerfully on her recently completed lesson. Finishing up her notes, Beck shoved the parchment and quill into her bag and pulled our her hair band, letting her orange locks hang loose down her back. Turning her full attention to her friend, Beck leaned back in her chair and mimicked Kani's action, tipping the chair back slightly. Beck couldn't help the smile that spread across her face despite the rough day she'd had. Kanita's bright personality could almost always brighten her day.
"They're all right, I suppose," Beck replied with a slight shrug. "To tell the truth, I don't see them that often. Capricornia's head girl this year, though, so I guess that's understandable." Grabbing the desk quickly as her chair tilted a bit too far back, Beck tipped the chair forward with a loud thunk against the stone floor. Deciding to keep all four legs planted firmly on the floor, Beck opted for pulling her legs up and tucking them under her comfortably as she sat instead.
"How are all your lovely housemates this year? Good, bad, absolutely detestable?" Beck asked with a grin. Of course, she didn't really expect the last answer, but her mood was lightening considerably and she felt her silly, joking attitude slowly seeping back into her consciousness.

Breaking into a fit of unladylike snorts, Kani slapped a palm to her mouth to stiffle the sound. She always, accidentally, let a snort escape when she was surprised into laughter. And it was such a dreadful habit, that seemed to surface when spending time with Beck. The girl just new how to use humour and sarcasm in the best ways possible. Kani couldn't help but crack a smile whenever they were together.
Swiftly getting her laughs under control, Kani placed her feet daintily on the table top, crossing them at the ankles. It was a dangerous thing, to laugh and balance a chair on two legs. So she thought it best to distribute her weight; so the balance came more naturally.
"I haven't quite gotten the chance to converse with my housemates either. But the blame is mine, for I've been busy. Dreadful really. Wish I had the time to talk with them." Tilting her head back and tapping a slim finger repeatedly on her chin, Kani's eyes glazed in thought.
"Hm, you think there will be a ball this year? It'd be a nice way for everyone to get acquainted..." her voice faded as she tried to recall when the next perfects meeting would be; to possibly figure the answer to her aforementioned question.
"A wonderful way actually...just think of all the suits and ties." Kani sighed in a dreamy manner as her lips tugged into a smile. The boys this year were slowly growing into men and the image of tuxes and dancing was brilliant.

Before she could stop it, a grimace spread across Beck's face at the mention of a ball. Most girls around Beck's age would have been ecstatic at the thought of a ball, afterall it would mean a chance to wear uncomfortably formal clothing for extended periods of time, smearing one's face with gobs of makeup supposed to enhance one's beauty, and spending the night dancing and chatting with overly attentive young males and simpering young females. Who wouldn't love that?
"My luck there will be," she answered, trying desperately to stop the slightly pained expression on her face at the thought. "Balls and Beck...they just don't work. Generally one is frowned upon when one attempts to wear jeans and a nice shirt in lieu of formal wear."
((We're getting rather far off the topic of DADA rather quickly. lol I'm not sure if they're ok with non-class related RP in classrooms, so we could move this to...I don't know, the library or the grounds...some place both houses are allowed? Just a suggestion, of course.))

((Oh my, haha, I didn't even notice..yes, we shall move spots I suppose >.<))
Taking note of Beck's discomfort at the mention of a ball, Kani tried to look at the idea from her friend's perspective. She could see how one might hold disdain towards such a formal event, even if she herself had a love for dancing.
"Oh Beck, I can just imagine you now. Taking hours to prep, wearing clothes two sizes to small and," fakes a gasp, "having to be lead across the dance floor by a male." Kani gently teased. She knew Beck perfered to do something more physically active, like quidditch or another sport. And she herself loved the outdoors and even the sweat of hard work combined with fun.
But Kani loved balls because they reminded her of her older sisters, whom she barely saw anymore. As a child, Kani would lay across her sisters pillows, watching with interest as they readied for a night out. Of course the entire time, she'd be bouncing with barely contained energy. Which eventually caused her sisters to kick her out of the room.
The image of flying flashed appealingly across Kani's eyes and with a clack, Kani's chair landed on all fours. Pulling her self to her feet and grabbing Becks bag and her own, Kani smiled.
"How about a fly around the grounds? I've been dying to break in my new broom!"
Holding Becks bag out for her to take, Kani waited for her friend to rush out into the crisp autumn day with her.

Beck laughed at Kani's teasing, fully aware that it was completely true. Beck just wasn't suited to such...girly events, even if she actually did enjoy dancing. It was just that dancing with the males at Hogwarts tended to be awkward considering most of them were friends and sports companions of Beck's. At the mention of flying, though, her look of discomfort turned immediately into a brilliant smile. If there was one thing she loved, it was flying.
"That sounds like a brilliant idea!"
Taking her bag from Kanita, she slung it over her shoulder and moved to open the door of the classroom. Holding the door open for the younger girl, she grinned and extended her arm with a slight bow. "After you."

Stiffling a giggle, Kanita put on a mock-serious face. She took quick, tiny steps towards the door and held her nose in the air as if she was a rich prat.
"Why thank you." Kani managed to exhale, before falling victim to her laughter. She then took a step out of the classroom, smiling sheepishly towards the professor. They really did stray off topic, she'd have to be careful about that in the future, for she felt guilt tug at her stomach.
"I'll meet you out by the lake!" Kanita shouted over her shoulder. Her feet sweeping her towards the Ravenclaw tower to fetch her broom.
((EDITED. OOC: Thank you, and sorry for the off topicness.))

((OOC: It is against the rules going into the dormitories of other houses, and please only post class related things in the class threads))
After the lecture, Eric found an empty desk to place the materials he needed. Spread out a scroll and a pen complete with an ink bottle. Several bottles and his wand.
Carefully he intoned the spell "Specialis Revelio!" a few times, but nothing happened. After a few more tries though, he did managed to accomplish it as his mind was filled with all the components that made up the potion.
Quickly he started taking notes, identifying the bottle and it's ingredients. He focused completely on his work. So much that before he realized it the class was over. Content, he packed his things and went away again.
