The Room

After going into what should be the Defense Against the Dark Arts room, you are confronted with a small circular room, with doors leading into three other rooms, circular as well, but much larger. In fact, the rooms are too large to fit the smaller rectangular room that should be there instead, but through magic, the much needed space for students was given.

The doors in the entry room are marked with numbers, from one to three. You step through the second door. The room inside has human-sized dummies all around the walls, with the exception of where the windows are located. These dummies do not serve only as targets though, as they can be commanded to attack on command.

The spell “Incurso” will make the dummy attack the caster every three minutes. It will start glowing until its bright red and humming softly, at that point it will fire a purple bolt that should it hit will either turn the caster’s hair into a random color for twenty four hours, replace its clothes with a bright yellow dress with neon green and neon pink flowers (with the original clothes appearing folded at the casters side, the changing room is located on the entry room) or turn their skin either green or purple for an hour.
The spell to make the attacks stop is “Claudeo”.

The middle of the room is dominated by three dueling platforms, with enchanted glass panes to halt any misfired spells. There is no door to enter them though, as anything but spells can pass through that glass. There are also a few chairs and desks scattered around the room, but the rest of the space is kept clear.

First Lesson

Looking out the window, Owen waited for students to come in. When he finally felt they were enough already, he turned around and spoke, loudly at first to get their attention.

"Good afternoon class, I am Professor Owen Avery-York, and I will be your new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher.

First off, I’d like to clarify a few things about this class. I will not teach you dark arts, but solely the means one can use to defend against them. I’m certain some of you thought that was what this class was about, but you are wrong. You will learn protection spells and counter-spells. You will learn about dark creatures and what to do if you come face to face with one. You will learn how to brew effective antidotes to help others. And ultimately, should it come to that, how to do battle and survive. That is the purpose of this class.

Second, I’d like to explain to you what exactly the Dark Arts are. While some magic is particularly good, such as the patronus spell, or evil like the most curses. The vast majority of it is neutral, and so, being evil alone doesn’t make it a dark art.

The most common thing you’ll have to deal with is Dark Magic, spells that have a physical effect besides the magic. Most notably these are curses that hurt, tamper with people minds or ultimately… Kill.

The difference lies in the intent of the wizard or witch that wields it. That so, even should a person cast an unforgivable curse, it doesn’t mean he or she is using the dark arts. It all comes down to the true and genuine intentions of the caster.

That is a difficult distinction to make at times. To distinguish when what someone is doing is acceptable, or is using the dark arts. Understanding this is of key importance for witches and wizards. Especially ones so young like you. By the time you leave this school, it is my hope that you’ve become able to tell the difference. But for now, it’s still not your job to do so yet.

One more thing before we continue with the class. To be prepared against the dark arts, it is vital that one is in top mental and physical shape. That means lots of reading and exercise. I strongly suggest you do both as some of my evaluations will test both of those abilities. Well then, let’s get on with the class."

Turning to the black board, the Professor started talking, writing and sometimes drawing things. Using up the first half of the class, he spoke about protection spells.

"Well then," he started at the beginning of the second half. "for practice this is what I want you to do" he said.

"The Fourth Years, will pick a dummy and use the Protego spell to stop their attacks. Cast 'Incurso' on them to make them attack, and cast 'Claudeo' to make them stop. There's a delay, and they can't move, only cast that one spell so you should be fine."

"The Fifth Years, will pick not one but the three. You will put them in a circle around you and use the Protego Totalum spell. It will create a stronger shield around you, and your immediate vicinity. So you should try to withstand alternating attacks from them. In real life, you never know where the next attack will come from. The command words are the same as the fourth ones."

"Should you get hit, don't worry as none of the effects are permanent. Well, get to it! As this is the first lesson, I will not demand homework, but expect it on the next one. As for now, I'll be going around the room helping where needed. Feel free to call me."

Darcy walzed into the second door. She sat down at a desk in the middle row and listened eagerly to the professor. DADA had always been her favorite class, next to Ancient Runes anyway.

She stood up and got three dummies when Professor Avery-York allowed them to practice. She stood in the middle of them all.

"Incurso!"she said. All of the human-sized dummies pointed their wands at her and she braced herself for the impact.

Bolts of puprle lightning flew at her from all three sides. She raised her wand and cast the spell. "Protego Totalum!"

Darcy sensed something was wrong, nothing was happening! All three of the bolts hit and she winced. Once the tingling feeling had died away, she turned to a mirror in the room and gasped. Her hair was bright blue! Not her dark auburn! And her skin! Oh no, it was purple! Her clothes had changed as well! A bright yellow dress with neon pink and green flowers!

Perry would never let her live this down....

Darcy groaned and walked to the professor, she had to get herself fixed.

Cha-Noi, having always been punctual, had made his way into the classroom to get the full lesson description. He scrambled out of his seat and picked out a dummy to practice on.

Once he took a deep breath, he said out loud the word, "Incurso"! Upon the begin of the attack, he winced slightly and quickly followed with a rather louder "Claudeo". He took a deep breath as the dummy stopped, using a hand to brush hair out of his face. He had completed it once successfully, and felt relieved.

Steven ran in right before the class started. As he sat down Professor Avery-York began to lecture about the basis of the class. He got out a piece of parchment and began to take notes but soon enough his mind was wandering and he was doodleing on the edges of the parchment. After the lecture was done Steven got up and faced the one dummy he was practicing on. Pulling out his wand he pointed it at the dummy and said "Incurso!" as the dummy started to hum focused and cast his spell. "Protego!" a purple shot whizzed toward him and hit him in the fore head. His hair slowly shifted to a light blue color. He quickly muttered the counter-charm and put his wand away. "Damnit!" He swore to himself.

Dakota strolled in casually through the second door and sat down, then began taking notes as Professor Avery-York began discussing protective spells. He sighed as he realized they were going to be working with dummies, and not other students. Class was always more fun when you got to interact with each other, although it tended to result in mayhem of some sort.

As the second half of class began, he picked a dummy and began to practice. Raising his wand, he said, "Incurso!" The dummy began to slowly change color, and Dakota carefully practiced the pronunciation of the spell they were to use to ward off its attacks, Protego. A faint glow now surrounded the dummy, and with a downward swish Dakota attempted to cast a protective charm. "Protego!" he cried, to little effect. He tried again, more nervously this time as the dummy had begun to hum softly. "Protego!" A flash of bright purple light surrounded him, and he fell to the ground with the force of the spell.

Sighing, he stood up and tried to calm himself, running a hand through his red hair. Then, he noticed that his skin was a bright shade of green. "Well, at least I'm not wearing a frilly dress... This time." He thought hard as the dummy began glowing again. 'Now, how is it pronounced again? Pro-teh-zho? No... Pro-teh-go, right? But that's not right either...' The dummy had begun to hum once more, so Dakota quickly pointed his wand at it and said, "Protego!" A bright flash of purple streaked at him, and he flinched, but did not feel the impact of the spell. Opening his eyes, he grinned, and turned the dummy off with a muttered, "Claudeo." 'I did it!,' he thought happily as he sat down on the floor to take a break, exhausted. Little did he realize that his hair was now a violent purple.

Kairi Myana, having not woken up when her five alarms went off, walked into the classroom fairly quickly.

She slid into the room while the teacher's back was to her and slumped into an empty chair near the back.

After listening to the rest of the teacher's speech, Kairi looked at the board to see what the fourth years will have to be doing.

Seeing that it was the Shield Charm, Kairi smiled. She always wanted to know how to do these, especially when someone tries to attack her in the hall like they did last year.

Kairi jumped up and walked over to the nearest dummy and stopped.
She muttered the charm over and over again, not expected it to happen until she was pointing to something.

Once she was ready, Kairi took a deep breath.
PostPosted: Sat Oct 06, 2007 10:35 am

After taking a few breaths, Kairi stood in a fighting stance she had seen in the movies and pointed her wand at the seemingly lifeless dummy.

She said "Incurso" loudly and jumped when the dummy sprang to life and started
to hum.

Kairi stood there, staring at the now glowing dummy with a curious look.

Suddenly, the target shot a purple lighting-bolt type thing. Kairi shot back but didn't attack and she got her consequence when she looked into a random mirror on the wall.

Though she hadn't felt anything, the purple bolt had caused her hair a dark blue.

Her eyes wide, Kairi was shocked for a moment after casting the spell for the dummy to stop. After a second, she started laughing and decided that it was hilarious, but only so because the color wasn't permanent.

Kairi stood ready for the second time, now with blue hair, and said the spell again and the dummy came to life once more.

This time she was ready and shouted "Protego".

Something came out of her wand and went in front of her.

Guessing it was her shield, she smiled but her grin faltered when the bolt broke her magical shield and her hair turned neon-orange.

Laughing again, but in a more annoyed way, Kairi decided she didn't want to see her hair turn green and got ready to make her shield work.

Kairi Myana worked on her spell for about six more times. Her hair now yellow, a few of the ugly dresses lay discarded on the floor, and her skin a sickening green.

"Now," she thought, "I'm going to get this right!"

Standing at the ready, Kairi pointed her wand at the would-be heart of the dummy and said "Incurso".

As the purple lightning flew out of the humming dummy, Kairi shouted "PROTEGO" and this time it worked.

A strong magical shield appeared, as if an invisible brick wall formed in front of her. The dummy-spell bounced off the see-through wall and hit the caster.

Now the dummy was an gross mixture of purple and brown.

Grinning broadly, Kairi did the same thing about ten more times before deciding she had finally gotten the hang of it.

Cha-Noi's eyes moved about the classroom at all the other students. It seemed the lot of them were having trouble. He frowned slightly as he noticed all the altered hair colors and those who had clothing changes, as well. Had he been the only one to complete it? He thought maybe he had dreamt the first practice shot, and decided to try once more, for his own sake.

He lifted his wand to his practice dummy and said firmly, "Incurso!". The dummy changed color, and began to hum. As soon as he saw the beginnings of the attack, he said "Protego!" loudly. He took another deep, relieved voice as the dummy ceased the assault. He frowned slightly as he looked to his classmates once more. Was it pronunciation? If that hindered anyone, shouldn't it be him, as he had a much different accent than that of the other students? He shrugged it off and closed his eyes to relax a moment.

Although it was the first class of the day, Rene was wide awake. Defense Against the Dark Arts was not one of his favorite classes, but he tended to do well and found it interesting to study. From the look of things, there was a new teacher running things around here, as Rene couldn't remember the numerous dummies lined up against the wall. Sitting down, he prepared to take notes as usual, but gave up shortly after Professor Avery-York began speaking.

'Man, after a bogus lecture like that, I won't be surprised if I have a migraine by noon...' Rene thought to himself as he massaged his temples wearily. 'At least this lesson will be an easy one, so I can finish reading that copy of Transfiguration Today that Marilyn sent.' Shaking his head to clear the fog that had been gathering throughout the class, and selected three dummies to work with, arranging them around him in a circular formation. He cast the activation spell on each one, allowing some time to elapse in between in order to stagger the timing of their attacks.

As he turned from the third dummy, the first had already began to hum, so he quickly raised his wand and said, "Protego Totalum!" He was immediately surrounded by an invisible bubble that repelled the flash of purple light that the dumy released shortly afterwards, as well as the next few shots from the other dummies. After a while, the shield began to fade, so he recast it and disabled the dummies one at a time.

"Alright," Steven said to himself. "Pronounciation: pro-TAY-go, protehgo, Protego! got it." He pulled out his wand again and faced the dummy. "Incurso." he said steadily waiting a little bit for the dummy to get ready. As a low hum came from in front of him, he raised his wand and said "Protego!" The dummy loosed a purple shot that stopped about sik inches in front of his face. "Claudeo," he said as he flicked his wand toward the dummy with a smile.

Darius ponders this, then murmurs "Protego Totalum... I can do this." He grins slowly, and moves slowly towards a group of three dummies. He studies them, positions them, then says "Incurso." He turns, quickly, repeats, and turns again, repeating one more time. He then points his wand out, and with a slow, pleased grin, he waves it and says "Protego Totalum!" He grins as it blossoms out around him, protecting him from the curses and hexs the dummies shot.
He looked pleased, and perhaps a little smug. He remembered basic Protego and he had a feeling he could do this and do it well. It seems he was right. "Claudeo!" He says, with a flick of his wand, and then watches the dummies stop as he stands there. He practices, over and over, for a good half an hour, until he was quite sure he had it down. He then gave the teacher a polite, respectful bow, and re-takes his seat.

Lex was late for her first DADA class of the year. She was really late. she was mumbling and complaining at her broken alarm clock until she reached the room and quietly snuck in. Professor Avery-Yoke was writing notes on the board. Lex slinked into an empty seat before she could be scolded. 'I guess two years of being a prankster really pays off. I was a master of stealth back in my day' she thought to herself. Lex paid attention to the directions and got to work. She found three dummies and stood before them unthreatened. She had been in the dueling club for three consecutive years and felt confident she could defeat the dummies. "Okay. She sighed. "Incurso," she said calmy yet with drive. The dummies began to hum and come to life. She hesitated, feeling cocky, waiting for the last moment she could strike. Finally she attacked "Protego To-" but it was way too late. one of the dummies attacked her and she was blasted to the ground. "Claudeo..." she mumbled. Lex groaned as she sat up and looked into a nearby mirror. Her hair was hot pink. She ran her fingers through it, shrugging and not caring for the difference since her hair was usually blonde with pink highlights.
"Alright. I'll try this one more time. I'm gonna defeat you." Lex said pointing at the dummies. "You're not real. You don't have a mind. so ha!" She stared down the inanimate people and finally said "Incurso" As they hummed back to life, Lex immediately said "Preotego Totalum," causing the protective shield to block them at last. Lex dismissed the dummies with a 'claudeo' and smiled at her victory. "Mission completed."

Darcy sighed to herself as she gathered her three dummies again. The Professor said that the colors would fade out eventually. She closed her eyes and pointed her wand at one of the dummies.

"Incurso!" The dummies raised their wands again and fired. She quickly slashed up her wand and shouted the spell.

"Protego Totalum!"she cried. A blur of purple shot out from her wand and stood in front of her, blocking the spells. She smiled widely and cast the counter charm.

She had accomplished it!

Jes wandered into class and took a seat. After listening to Professor York, she got up excitedly to get a dummy. Jes was excited to finally get into Defence Against the Dark Arts again. It was her favorite class, well it was after Transfiguration. She set up her dummy in an empty corner and decided to practice saying the spell first.
"Protego." she said simply. Jes turned to the human like dummy and brought up her wand.

"Incruso!" Jes said loudly. The dummy had a faint glow to it. She braced herself as the glow and the new humming sound grew brighter and louder. The dummy was red and the sound of the humming was bugging her ears. Shutting her eyes she took a deep breath.
'That was a mistake. . .' Jes thought when she looked up from the floor. Rubbing her left shoulder, which she landed hard on, Jes pulled herself off the floor and got back into position.

'Okay, mental note: DON'T CLOSE YOUR EYES!' Jes thought as the dummy began to glow red. Taking a breath, without closing her eyes, Jes waited for the perfect moment to cast her spell.
"Protego!" She shouted. Suddenly there was a sheild around her and the purple light disappeared.
"I did it!" She said grinning.
