The World

By the year 2032 the world hasn't changed as much as we expected in most ways, diseases still run rampant though HIV/AIDS is under better control than any time in the century. Flying cars are still just beyond the horizons, and commercial space travel is still on the drawing board. some things however have changed more than anyone could have wanted.

The Found

Early in the summer of 2009 an international expedition entered a large fissure that had formed in Antarctica's coastal ice. After weeks of exploring the extensive network of caverns running throughout the ice and going into the earth that makes up the continent they came upon structures, first just a tunnel braces, then the tunnels became more uniform but eventually the tunnels ended, not at a rock face or unclimbable cliff, but at a door, just like any other door you might find in your house.

The door took them into a large abandoned base that seemed to have been cleaned of anything that could say whose it was. Most of the base seemed to be dedicated to medical experiments ranging from bacteria that consume radioactive materials to 57 cryogenicly frozen genetically enhanced fetuses. While there were many discoveries that improved many things the eyes of the world were occupied with the fetuses. Within the year several of them had been thawed out and started growing. Very quickly in fact. Within a short time they were walking and talking, disproving theories of physics that had been standing for decades, and breaking all manor of records.

Some of them grew faster than others, and some of them never stopped, quickly becoming old and dieing of age while still only single digits but most of them became 'adult' after about five years and then aged like normal. Referred to as the Found most of them were fairly normal other than being super intelligent super athletes but as more were revived they began showing strange traits and abilities.

The Abandon

With all this going on nobody noticed that normal children were showing similar attributes, though less refined, it wasn't until 2018 that they were officially recognized by anything more than tabloids. They scared the world more than the Found had, most of them were orphaned quickly, the world came to know them as the Abandon, an object of irrational fear and treated with hate it, was only to be expected that they grew to hate the world in return, only escalating the situation.

Many of the Found had become successful members of the society they choose to live in, by 2020 half the world's richest people were Found, but they were also very compassionate people. Feeling in some unknown way the Abandon were their fault they did all they could to help but with public opinion as it was all of it was done in secret and under false names. They set up sanctuaries and schools where the Abandon could go, sponsored research on what caused them. Though they now had a place to go many of the Abandon had been raised on hate and neglect, becoming criminals to survive, drifting to stay out of view, settling down was hard for many and impossible for some. Still the Found did not give up on them, setting up hidden places they could stay all over, mostly out of abandoned structures in secluded areas where they wouldn't be around people who would judge them for the way their genes matched up.

Over time things settled a little, some of the places gained semi-permanent residents and the rest of the world went back to fighting it's self over ideas; every now and then something would bring the Abandon back into the spotlight but they would fade away again soon enough.

The Cheshire Institute

One particular house for Abandon was built out of the Cheshire Institute located on the Pacific side of the rocky mountains in just the right location that it seems to perpetually cycle between fall and spring. The grounds have taken the years since the school was shut down well, nearly seventy years and most of it still stands unwavering though most of the windows and doors are gone or broken many of the inner rooms were secretly repaired along with a minimum of plumbing and electrical so visitors have good living conditions. A near by mining town has agreed to periodically supply the location with a small array of food stuffs, mostly non-perishables. It's a very nice place if far below most people's standard of living, it has kept it's fair share of Abandon alive.

The Cheshire Institute safe house was chosen for a reason, its far from everything and many Abandon need to get away from that everything for various reasons, whether something they did or something they're believed to have done or something else entirely. Most safe houses gain visitors through rumors spread between Abandon, and though a few have come to Cheshire by that means most are told by a secret group run by the Found that search out Abandon who need to get away from whatever and convince them to go there until it's safe for them to go back out into the world, they also help setup a way for them to get to Cheshire with out drawing attention. There are only a few safe houses like this and a great deal is done to keep then out of the eye of the public, where with most others the public simply accepts that its there and that they are out of the way, not bumming on a street corner in town.

Side Notes

While most of the Found ended up with good lifes some weren't much better off than some of the Abandon and vice versa. The strange powers held by some Abandon are usually very primitive, especially compared to the powers held by some of the Found. Most of the powers are centered around physical attributes and elemental control but powers involved with other things are not too rare. With a very rare exception the Abandon age normally, the few that didn't never stopped and aren't around anymore.

Yes, this RP is based in the year 2032 at the Cheshire Institute safe house for Abandon. No, there are not vampires or werewolves (, elves, dwarfs, angels, demons of any sort, or magic/alchemy like stuff, etc)

Whatever caused the Abandon only effects humans.

A Tour of the Campus

The main complex sits on a secluded plateau just below where the trees end, with some other buildings scattered appropriately throughout the surrounding evergreen forest. A small dirt road runs from the gates to the town. The buildings have been covered by vines and moss, making them blend in with the forest and go almost totally unnoticed by the town's people.

The campus has four buildings arranged around a courtyard centered with a dried up fountain. Directly across the courtyard from the gate is a two story building with a clock tower in the middle, it houses the class rooms and offices for teachers, it doesn't have much to offer visitors now days so it's rarely used.

On ether side are a pair of brick shaped buildings three stories tall running from the back of the plateau to the gate, they are the boys and girls dorms, but nobody cares to enforce the separation anymore. They are laid out in a way that there is a ring of rooms facing the outside and a core of windowless rooms in the middle on the second and third floor with a set of meeting halls on the ground floor. Both also feature a cafeteria on the first floor. The core dorms and kitchen have been repaired, the outer dorms left as they were to help hide the fact that the building isn't abandoned anymore.

The fourth building isn't really so much a building as it is a shed with an elevator in it next to the gate. The elevator has been repaired but made to look like it hasn't, it leads into a section of the mine that had been run dry before the school had been built, the original owners used it as storage and aged a bit of wine down there. When the campus was revived as a safe house the mine was set up to be an escape route of sorts. It goes deep into the mountain and a few passages come out on the other side. Added to that parts of the mine have been set up as living quarters, many of these are disguised by false rock faces and stocked with food so if they need to they can hide down there for weeks.

If you're coming up to Cheshire Institute from the road on your left you would see a small sports field complete with hybrid soccer goals/football goalposts and a partially collapsed wooden bleachers and a weathered tar oval track. The entire area has been reclaimed by nature with even a few young trees growing near the fifty yard line.

Accepted Profiles

Found

Username: McMuffinDragon
Character Name: Daniel Francis
Group: Found
Physical description Physical: He's tall and lean with a thin scar on his forehead, but his scraggly dark brown hair often covers it. His dark green eyes are kind and stand out against his pale skin. He wears a black sweater and a pair of dark blue denim jeans in addition to a necklace with a small Celtic knot charm on it.
Occupation: Musician/Singer
Apparent Age: 19
Synopsis of Life Events: After being found, he aged rather closely to natural time progression. The family he was placed in was a family of doctors and computer programmers, but Daniel liked music. To his adoptive parents' eternal regret, they sent him to a college of music on the east coast, after he graduated high school at sixteen.
Power: Earth manipulation (Stone etc.)

Abandon

Username: lily564a
Character Name: Dece (Angeline Mc'Down)
Group: Abandon
Physical description: Dece is pure bred American mutt, but most of her physical traits come from a mix bin of Northern European, a hand full of Asian bloodlines, and a light sprinkle of Native South American. Some how this resulted in a 6'1” girl with mid-back length hair of a shade of brown that could almost be dark blond, and almost unnoticeable tan skin tone, and a build resembling that of a muscular stick figure. Not that you're likely to see it the way she dresses, always in slightly baggy, raggedy old clothes that cover her up to her neck with an unmistakable air of homelessness. Her eyes are a dark shade of green that turns almost black in the shade. She keeps clean but its still pretty rough.
Age: 21
History: Born Angeline Mc'Down, Dece's family was very poor to begin with and before anyone even learned of her condition they had given her to an orphanage because they couldn't support a child. It wasn't until she turned eight when her powers began to manifest, luckily by that time she had been put with a foster family that was willing to look past it. Things took a turn summer of her 15th year, the details are hazy but by all accounts she lost control of her powers, 18 dead 30 something injured. She made herself disappear and hid among the other vagrants until one of the seekers from Cheshire caught up with her when she was 19.
Power: Can emit high powered shock waves from her body, though theres nothing concrete she mainly associates them with her hands.
Time at Cheshire: two years so far
Reason for stay: Accused of bombing against civilians.

Username: Wahoozerman
Character Name: Alan 'Jacknife' Campbell
Group: Abandon
Physical description He stands about 5'8" with semi long brown hair that hangs down and brushes his collar in the back and sweeps down over the right lens of his sleek black sunglasses in the front. His eyes are green and quick to notice most things. He is slender, he doesn’t have the huge bulking amount of muscle that most battle ready warriors do. He does however, have more muscle than the average person. His military and mercenary training has provided him with a well toned body capable of performing feats of acrobatic prowess as well as delivering a decently hefty punch. His skin is tanned to an even olive complexion common to people of Greek or Italian origin. On his right hand he wears a polished iron ring with black inlay and a pattern of Celtic knots encircling it. There is also a tattoo of a raven with its wings outstretched on the back of Alan's right hand, stretching up onto his wrist. This tattoo is rarely visible as it is often concealed by fingerless black gloves.

He wears simple clothing, including a black short sleeved T-shirt that is just a tad too small for him, forcing his muscles to show a little bit if he is straining them. Over his T-shirt Jacknife wears a light sleeveless flack jacket. The jacket is dark green and has many straps, clips, and pockets in which to hold useful equipment. Most of the time he wears the flack jacket unzipped and open, revealing his chest, though he is quick to zip it up during combat. Across his chest is a brown leather belt that stretches from his right shoulder to his left hip and buckles in the middle of his chest. The belt has clips along it for holding various odds and ends. Another identical belt encircles his waist. His pants are brown cargo pants, well broken in and comfortable, which he wears on his hips. The pants have eight pockets in them, two on the back, two on the sides, two below those, and another pair beneath those. The bottom pair of pockets seldom is used as they are almost always tucked into the tops of his combat boots. The boots are black leather with soles soft enough to bend in order to muffle footsteps, making Jacknife almost silent when he walks. In the right boot top there is a sheath for a knife. A second knife hangs in a black leather sheath that is attached to the back of his belt. The sheath hangs down on a strap about three inches from his waistline, giving him easier access to the knife. Both knives have a blade around eight inches long and one inch thick, with a handle of four inches.
Age: 22
History:
Rouge Operative

"Is this all of them?"
"It should be sir, why do you ask?"
"I think there's one missing."
"Are you saying we lost an embryo?"
"I think so."
"s**t... Well... Don't tell anyone. He will show up sooner or later. They don't hide very well."

Daddy loves me.

Alan raised the rifle and set it down against the small pile of sandbags. His small hands were too small to hold the gun properly, so his father stood behind him, big arms wrapped around the child to help steady both him and the gun. “Allright now, see that little spot down at the end? Line that up between the notches and point it at the target.” The older man was saying.

BANG

“A fine shot son. You’ll make a good hunter.”

Mommy loves me?

“Mam, we are prepared to pay you quite a substantial amount for your cooperation in this. We need the subjects, and people like him are extremely rare.”
“But are you sure he’ll be ok?”
“Of course mam, we take excellent care of our subjects.”
“Please don’t call him that, he’s my son.”
“Of course mam. I apologize.”
“Alright… You can have him.”
“Mommy, where am I going?”
“Just go with the nice man Alan, he’s going to take care of you.”

Unlock Your Mind.

“Welcome to Lockenkie research institute. You all will be living here under close scrutiny for the next ten years or so. At Lockenkie we will help you to reach your highest potential. We do not pretend that this will be easy. You will be forced to undergo rigorous training, both physically and mentally. You have all been given pass cards to your quarters. I’ll see you in the morning.”

The fifteen children stood looking at each other. Not one of them was over the age of eight. They would soon be taught by the top military minds of the world. They would be analyzed and scrutinized along each step of development. They were to be the world’s newest weapon, a new breed of soldier with the ability to manipulate his surroundings using only his mind. All the researchers had to do was turn the right key.

And the Walls Came Tumbling Down.

“This is Jericho training facility. Here we don’t baby you like those researchers at Lockenkie. Here we teach the best of the best. Many of you will fail and never be anything more than grunts. Anyone who succeeds will be one of the sneakiest, deadliest, and hardest to kill bastards on the planet.”

Alan turned to one of the other kids. “Hi, I’m Alan.”
“What kind of dumbass name is that?” The kid asked. “Listen, from now on your name is Jacknife.”
And so it was.

Oh Shitz, They Got Robots.

“Give it to me.” Jacknife yelled at the crispy fried Fischig. Without waiting for a response he set about stripping the flamethrower off Fischig’s back and searching the man for another tank of fuel.
“Psyche, I’m coming!” He shouted over his shoulder as he loaded the new tank and shouldered the pack. Flamethrower in hand he ran back towards the burning building into which Psyche had just been chased by what appeared to be some sort of shape shifting robot.
He pressed his back against the wall and waited, praying to whatever god Nascen kept yammering on about that Psyche would be able to get out. He had known her since Lockenkie, and there was a great connection between them.
Sure enough, Psyche came pelting out the door a few moments later. Jacknife spun about with the flamethrower raised and pointing straight through the doorway. The robot hit him square in the chest with a massive spike. Jacknife flew backward as the flame erupted from the flamethrower, the metal plate in his flack jacket saving his a**.
The entire house went up in flame. There was no way the robot could have survived. After a few minutes, a soccer ball sized object rolled out of the door. They had nabbed the core. Carter City was now just a little bit safer. Ok, so it was a lot safer.

Unaccompanied Miners

Jacknife gunned the engine, well… as much as the engine of a dirt bike could be gunned. He had to get the everliving hell out of there, and fast. The miners were popping up all across the fuel depot and taking pot shots at him as he wizzed past at top speed. The only things keeping him alive were the small nudges that he was giving the bullets as they sped towards him. He didn’t have to concentrate on each individually, just on pushing the collective bullets behind him.
He heard the engines of trucks roar to life as he sped out of range of the depot. Damn, they were chasing him. That was ok though, he would lose them in the forest. Dirt bikes were better at dodging trees than trucks were. He looked back over his shoulder. Holy s**t, there were a ton of them. He concentrated as he looked back and the hoods of the three closest trucks popped up, blinding the drivers and causing the trucks to slam into trees.
“I need some damn shades to come get these guys off my tail.” He muttered as he swung back and forth between trees at breakneck speed. “If only we could get those two fighting and let them do the dying for us.” Then he spotted a shadow moving off in the distance. For a moment he thought his mutterings had been answered, but it wasn’t a shade. It was however, a Kalis. A point proved when the kid opened fire on the trucks behind Jacknife, causing them to swerve off and give up the chase.
“Hurry up kid, let’s get the hell out!” Jacknife shouted to Kalis as he swung around to pick him up.

Power:
Natural Abilities
Jacknife is trained in many forms of acrobatics, from long and high jumps to flips and pole swinging. These abilities enable him to reach places most others would not be able to reach as well as climb and fall long distances without being injured. He becomes less able to perform these abilities if he is encumbered by a heavy weight or anything that would restrict his body's movement too much.

Jacknife is also well trained in tracking, sneaking, and leaving no trace himself. His training began due to his younger years being spent in the forest, then was continued at the hands of the Gaian Military after he was recruited as a scout and spy. It is impossible to track Jacknife when he is on foot through any sort of wilderness unless he is leaving some sort of obvious trail. Examples of such a trail would include a trail from a heavily bleeding wound or from a heavy object being dragged behind him.

Due to his training, Jacknife is also very adept at picking locks to get into places that he shouldn’t be in. He is so good at picking locks that he can pick many simpler locks so quickly that it appears as if he took out a key and unlocked it.

Telekinesis
Jacknife has the supernatural power to affect the surrounding world with his mind. Using this power can severely limit Jacknife’s ability to function physically while he is concentrating. While he is able to perform simple feats without sacrificing his mobility or attention, greater feats require more concentration, sometimes pressing him to the point where he is unable to move. Jacknife is able to command up to one thousand pounds of force through telekinesis. With the use of his sword this power is doubled.

Jacknife’s telekinesis has many limitations imposed on it. Since Jacknife must concentrate, he can only control up to three objects individually at the same time. He must concentrate harder to control each additional object. He may however control a mass of small objects as a single unit with no penalty. Jacknife must also use telekinesis on objects as a whole. He cannot point out a single place on an object to direct the force, and force is applied evenly throughout the object.

Jacknife’s telekinesis has a very limited effect on other living creatures. The mental energies of other living beings resist Jacknife’s power, thus he is unable to use telekinesis within three inches of another sentient being unless they are consciously willing, and then only for a very short period of time. Jacknife is able to overcome this limitation by releasing an uncontrolled surge of energy (GTFO Cannon). This surge fans out as a wave and strikes everything in its path, creating a GTFO effect and tossing everything backwards for at least ten meters in front of Jacknife. Because the release is uncontrolled, this causes a mental brownout in Jacknife, disabling him from using his powers for a number or hours and disorienting him for a few moments.

Time at Cheshire: Jacknife has been coming to Cheshire off and on for a couple years. He mainly uses it when he needs a place to lay low for awhile. When contracts go bad, or an employer threatens to expose him to the hate of the public, he generally preffers to disappear than to cause a fuss over it. He usually stays for months at a time before venturing back out into the world. He is far too antsy to stay in one place for too long.
Reason for stay: As of his most recent stay, Jacknife is one of the major targets of a large corperate crime ring. Lots of money can sway lots of people into doing lots of bad things. In this case lots of money tried to sway Jacknife into 'silencing' a local politician who's views were somewhat controversial and detremental to certain major corperations. When Jacknife refused the job, it became the companies' intent to silence not only the politician, but Jacknife as well. Rather than get himself killed, Jacknife decided to disappear from the map for awhile.

Username: Lost Child Maigo
Character Name: Calypso
Group: Found
Physical description Calypso is short, petite, and almost child-like. She has long brown hair and amber eyes that almost seem luminescent. Her skin is pale and it stand out against the dark colors she likes to wear. She still wears a metal ID bracelet from her time at the research institute.
http://fc01.deviantart.com/fs14/f/2007/102/7/7/____by_Teruchan.jpg

Age: 16
History: Calypso was one of the Abandon. She doesn't know where she came from. As a small child she was picked up by a member of a research institute interested in the Abandon. She grew up in the institute where she was studied by researchers until she was twelve. The researchers weren't mean, but Calypso wanted her freedom. During her time at the institute, Calypso had met a few of the Found and they told her about the safe houses. She escaped from the research institute and made her way to the Cheshire Institute. She doesn't like hiding, but she knows that it would be hard for her to start a normal life with the research institute still looking for her.
Power: Calypso is athletically superior to anyone else her size. She's also brilliant especially when it comes to matters of biology and medicine. She has the ability to consciously control every aspect of her own body's metabolism and natural functioning. Her most obvious power is that she can deliver an electrical discharge from her hands.
Time at Cheshire: Four years
Reason for stay: Avoiding the research institute that was studying her.

Username: Zahth
Character Name: William Sheperd
Group: Abandon
Physical description: Standing at five foot two William Sheperd tends not to stand out. However any who know him consider anything but average.
Age: 19
History: Born to a middle-class family William was brought up with a strict sense of values and beliefs. He went through the normal angst ridden teenage years, before his abilities started to develop. If anything his abilities allowed him to excel in life. His grades soared, until it became obvious he was a manifestation of everything the world seemed to hate. His academic scores were revoked, he was rejected from every university and college in the country. None of this really discourage him though, knowing he did not really need such things. After spending less then a few months at home he left never to return, stumbling upon the Cheshire estate in his journey.
Power: Unlike most, his abilities are not inhuman in the physical but rather in the intellectual. He is able to build anything he can imagine, given enough time. From a particle accelerators, to a toaster built into a watch, he is able to create it. This ability has allowed him to quickly emerge himself in the Cheshire institute, building many of the things the residence entertainment.
Time at Cheshire: fifteen months
Reason for stay: He enjoys the challenges his fellow Abandon offer him [ie. building them something "cool"]

Username:I_Love_Eggnog
Character Name: Rei
Group:Abandon
Physical description:Rei looks like a young boy. About 4'2", with blond spiky bangs that peek out behind a black sock hat that she never takes off. She's not developed and so her green shirt hugs tightly giving her that young boy look. She wears faded blue torn shorts that fit snugly and don't come past her mid thigh and a big black belt. She's always in big black boots that go up just below her knee. The only thing that's somewhat girly is a blue garter that she wears mid thigh. She has bright green eyes that are sometimes obscured by her bangs as they fall in her face constantly. Being as clumsy as she is she usually has a bandage on her face somewhere.
Age:12
History:Rei, was born to a poor family, upon finding out about her gift her father forced her out of the home. Her mother desperately tried to keep her nearby, but when her father proved to be stubborn in his decision, her mother gave her a map, a stuffed rabbit, and the garter she wore at her wedding and dropped her off in the city. After a tearful goodbye with her mother Rei was plunged into a world of violence and crime. She was always moving, afraid of saying in the same place for a long period of time. Rei, is not her given name, but after finding that it meant "zero" in Japanese, took it as her own. She's often been confused as a young boy, and likes to keep it that way. Even her voice has a boyish tone to it, only those that she confines her secret to know the truth. Even though she had lived in the corrupted city, she has always remained a child. Being curious, and mischievous she loves playing harmless tricks and making people laugh.
Power: Bending of Light
Although Rei can make herself and objects become invisible, it lasts about two hours. She is able to control light, bending it to blend in with the objects around it. She is also able to take the light away forcing a room, or small area into complete and utter darkness, for again two hours.
Time at Cheshire: -----
Reason for stay: ------

Username: Thaesimir
Character Name: Kyle Green
Group: Abandon
Physical description: Kyle is 5'4" and weighs 132 lbs. He usually wears all black, and seems to always be in the shadows. He likes to wear black hoodies and black jeans, usually with a black band t-shirt underneath, always sporting some of his favorite heavy metal bands. He has shoulder length, blond hair, which usually clashes with his sense of style, but he likes it. His eyes are deep blue-gray, and his skin has a pale shade to it, but it never looks unhealthy. He is considered attractive by many people, even those who don't like his style of dress.
Age: 19
History: He was raised in many different orphanages, always moving whenever he got in trouble and was kicked out. He never was a bad kid, he just couldn't help but sneak around and steal things. When he got older, he finally learned to control his urge to steal, focusing it and training himself to become a thief. It always seemed as though luck was always on his side, because he seemed to always get away without being caught. Then, when he was about 12, his powers finally manifested enough so that he could control them. Having practiced for years, he is now one of the best thieves around.
Power: Kyle's powers come from the shadows themselves. Whenever he is in darkness, in any form, he can become almost invisible to all five senses. If he touches someone while using his power, that person just feels a shiver run down their spine, never knowing what caused it. If one was to watch him go into the shadows, he would seem to disappear, leaving behind only a faint trail of where he once stood. Also, if said person did not know what he is capable of, their mind would just come up with a reason for his disappearance, like thinking he just left the room or something. He has also been working on a theory of his. He believes that he could use the shadows anywhere to teleport himself to other shadows, but so far he hasn't gotten more than a few inches, and even then he isn't sure that he has even moved.
Time at Cheshire: Kyle has been at Cheshire for about three years, finding it a wonderful place to practice his abilities. He never steals from the other people staying there, and never does anything inappropriate, he just likes to sneak around at night.
Reason for stay: He came here when he was sixteen, and has felt like Cheshire was his true home. He never seems to talk to many people, but those that he does hang out with, he would do anything for. His friends are the main reason he stays.

Come on next character...

I'm gonna go stalk people, try and find someone who'll fit. If everything goes well we'll start sometime tomorrow, if things go unreasonably well... well, I wont even jynx that plan.

Alright, four people (I get the feeling I'm forgetting someone), we're good to go, but I'm terrible at starting this kind of thing, if any of you are good at it (and have a profile in, doesn't have to be up) feel free to take the first step, I'll put something up tonight, probably in two to three hours if nobody else does. (also I'm not great at going fast, please try not to lose me but don't worry to much about it)

((Italics show either thoughts or comments made by Daniel's adoptive parents))

Daniel drove his beat up 2025 dark green compact car up the small hill. That's what you get for not becoming a cardiologist like your brother. His 'mother' had told him. The vehicle was held together with duct tape and prayers. You could have been a mechanic, Daniel. Mom always reminded him. Daniel was on his way back from a visit with his 'parents.' It was their 10th anniversary.

Let us get you a new one, son. His father, a software programmer and Daniel's favorite of the two, had offered.

"Oh no, Dad." Daniel growled as he pushed the crappy old car up to the gates, "She's got another ten years in 'er." He recalled his folly of refusal. It was right of him though, Jack and Barbara Francis has given him so much, Daniel didn't feel it was right to accept anything else.

Standing up straight at a clang when the car hit something, sweat dripped from the tips of his hair. The gates were shut. "Oh for Christ's sake..." he growled. Scuffing his foot hard in the dust, a small wave of stone rippled under the car and opened the gates about ten inches. Good enough. Digging in his heels, Daniel continued to push the car forward.

The horrible screech of metal on metal filled his ears, making him twitch and cringe. The gates groaned as they were forced open by the little green car. With a great struggle, he finally managed to squeeze his car onto the campus. Turning around to close the gates, Daniel shot back when he heard a bang.

There were clouds of steam pouring from under his hood. With a sigh, Daniel opened his trunk and took out his bags and guitar. The car wouldn't run again. Leaving his car to die where it lay, right in front of the gates, Daniel made his way to the courtyard.

The clang barely registered with Dece, overshadowed by the eggs sizzling on the stove and the screech covered by the strong wind blowing through the trees ahead of tonights storm; The bang on the other had surprised her almost to the point of spilling her hard earned dinner, instead turning it from sunny side up to scrambled and knocking a knife off the counter barely missing her foot.

Sliding the pan over to another burner sloppily, she ran, or rather slid across the linoleum of the cafeteria, stepping into a pair of flip-flops at the threshold to the main hall of the dorm building. The door outside was cracked, it didn't like to stay closed anyways but this way she only had to grab the side and pull. Sliding a little more on the degraded concrete, more of a gravel now as she stepped outside in a rush.

An exaggerated sigh escaped Dece after a moment, it was only Daniel. "Didn't you just get that back from the repair shop?" she shouted playfully another moment later as she walked carefully across the rock.

Daniel looked up. It was only Dece. Nice girl, if a bit uncontrollable. Technically he was older than her, and he was a caretaker. He sighed and smiled softly. "That piece of junk could only hold on so long, no matter how many mechanics try to fix it." Daniel laughed softly to himself. "Shoulda taken that offer when I had the chance." He muttered under his breath. With another sigh, Daniel tapped his foot several times on the gravel. It slowly smoothed out and settled. He sat and stared vaguely up at the sky.

"How were things while I was gone?" Daniel asked running his hands down his face.
