One of my friends says that the best way to end abortion is not to make it illegal, but to keep it legal, but before any women go into an abortion to make it mandatory to educate her on how the fetus is a baby and what could happen to her and all that...

I pointed out that as soon as we started making it mandatory that all women be told what a horror abortion is, that abortions would hardly happen anymore. He replied with, 'Great.'

I then told him that if that were the case, every pro-choice person in the world would be against his plan, because it would decrease abortions, and that all the abortionists want is money, and that since you're cutting off that, they're going to protest.

He then proposed that to keep the abortionists quiet, the government should fund them.

( scream )

I told him that they'd still try to drag women into the clinics, because the more money they get, the better for them. And I asked him where would it end? Because as soon as he stops flicking money at the aboritonists, they're going to start aborting like crazy and protesting like mad again.

Anyone else wanna help me blow some more holes in his argument? whee

For one thing, although the idea is interesting and has some merit, it disregards that the reason we want it illegal is that we equate it to legalized murder. For another, it seems like paying them is almost blackmail, you know? confused

One little mistake. Many pro-choice consider themselves pro-life, they just don't want to choose for people, the pro-abortionists, on the other hand, would care.

Yeah, and as soon as this is proposed, abortionists won't like it, Planned Parenthood and ALL its associates (they're network is huge) won't like it cuz it would ruin they're industry, Condoms to Go and all that woudn't like it, the media wouldn't like it, and thus ALMOST NO ONE would go along with it.

well....keeping it legal and making it illegal are kinda....hmm. How should I put it.

If you keep it legal, there's legal murder. If you make it illegal, there's uproar and it's basically impossible to do at this point. Abortionists don't all do it for money. A lot of them feel morally satisfied becuase they're liberating women from the chains of the cruel government that keeps them from killing their children. Who would teach it? if prolifers taught it, it'd be biased towards our side; vice versa with prochoicers. I mean, not purposely biased, but biased all the same. Wording can affect a decision....referring to a zygote or cell cluster is much different than embryo or fetus. If the government funds them, they would teach the courses....consequently, their facts, be them true or convenient, would be taught to these women. And actually, with abortion, the government saves money. Dead serious. It's gonna take a long time, and a lot of fighting, because this is an uphill battle. We're fighting for people who can't thank us, can't help us fight, can't stand up for themselves. There is a much larger number of people who don't care about them than there are of us. We're fighting against myths, false moral highgrounds, lies, politics, egotism, and we're fighting alone. The truth has to get out, people have to be educated, but compromising and keeping it legal is a bad idea. I was only half joking in that joke post about why are we worrying; think about it. At the rate people are having kids now, the ones who have the most are the ones who are prolife (usually). The ones who abort won't leave behind as many little minds to influence and eventually support for abortion will start becoming limited to people who are too young to vote and a sprinkling of others. That's just my personal fantasy, but it'd be convenient.

I think they tried to do that in Iowa and the governer refused it is kind of sad all people wanted was for the women to know what was happening, I think they called it A womans right to know or something

A lot of these women don't want it told to them. Many of the women who have abortions each day walk into that room suppressing their doubt and walk out regretting what they've done for the rest of their lives. They know that they've had their developing baby torn from their body and killed, but they have to believe that all they've done is "had a pregnancy terminated." It's easier when the 'nurses' are on your side, telling you that you're just ridding yourself of an unwelcome burden rather than telling you that you're about to make the decision for them to kill a baby of your own flesh and blood.

It goes right back to the reason why so many women, even doubting it, have abortions - they're pregnant, they don't want to be, and they want the problem to just go away. Yes, I believe that no matter how hard it is for them, they need to know exactly what they are doing when they have an abortion. So many young girls are hustled into clinics and hustled out, told that this is the easy way out .. and forced to live with regret and guilt. Others don't have abortions, are abandoned, and have a baby to take care of. Imagine yourself having to choose - wouldn't you want an abortionist telling you there's a no-strings-attached way out?

Women with unwanted pregnancies NEED support. They need to have options. You can tell them the truth and make it harder for them - and they do deserve the truth. But we need more options for these women - we need a better adoption system, and we need better support for them if they choose to keep the baby. Telling them the facts of abortion may just make a hard step they feel that they have no other choice but to take harder. Personal support and options will be what will allow them to make other choices.

Though your idea is good in theory... I think it definitely needs work. First of all...

1) Keep abortion legal
- From a moral standpoint, this is just wrong. It's basically legalizing murder or homocide, and so basically it's just morally wrong. However, for the sake of your argument, we're not going to throw in a pro-life argument, alright? Let's say it is illegal for one moment. Many rebellious women that don't want to be told what to do will then go out of their way to get abortions just to show defiance since it's "their bodies and they can do what they want with them", so making it illegal might slow down the pace but it will definitely make some of the more radical pro-choicers go berserk. So it's a double-edged sword... keep it legal and argue to change the minds of women, or make it illegal and watch as the pro-choicers go berserk. =\

2) Educate women before the abortion
- Yes, that's REALLY going to work. If doctors continue to be paid for giving a woman an abortion, then you're going to have a problem. Why? Well, think about it. The doctor may "forget" to put in the video. The doctor may ask if the woman has time to watch the video. The video could jam and break... so many "accidents" preventing the woman from seeing the video, thus the doctor still gets paid and the woman still gets the abortion. Good in theory, but if doctors get paid, then the ones who care about money will only worry about getting paid. =\

3) Make abortions free
- Oh yeah. Now what sounds better - buying protection, or going to a clinic and getting an abortion for free? This is just screaming "GO UNDERAGE UNPROTECTED SEX!" Definitely not a good idea... although it promotes the idea of women making up their own mind, it makes the more immature younger sex-goers giggle and laugh at the very idea of free sex with "no risk involved". =\

Basically, our best bet is just to keep arguing at this point... if we do anything radical at this point it'll just shake everything up and nothing will really change - it'll just get more chaotic and hectic. What we need to do is get younger more impressionable audiences to see these - photographs, videos, anything. If we can expose them to it to make them understand that it is wrong, then things should work out in the end, though it may take quite a few years before there are noticeable results.
