As seen in blue on the map to the North, the Northern Tribe meanwhile, lives in a large city with an outer wall of ice. It is characterized by it's system of roadways which are actually elaborate canal systems which people travel by gondola, though there are pathways and bridges that also serve for transportation purposes. The Northern Water Tribe city features a palace, an army, skilled warriors and healers, and also has a hidden sanctuary for the Moon and Ocean spirits Tui and La.

The culture of the Northern Tribe is defined by a strict class system. Marriages are arranged when a girl turns sixteen, and she receives a betrothal necklace carved by their husband-to-be. Until recently, women waterbenders in the North were forbidden to learn fighting tactics, and were instead trained to be healers only with their bending skills. However, with the discovery of the generations Avatar from the tribe (who is female), these rules have lessened, though very slightly. Women are allowed to bend, but have a very hard time finding a teacher (since most of them are still male) to assist them, and even if they do, they tend to face harassment from the guys.

Members of the water tribe, Northern and Southern, typically have light to dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a tan skin tone. Water Tribe clothing usually consists of a set of blue anorak (or poncho) and trousers, both of which are lined with white fur against the cold of the climate and are worn with mittens and mukluks (or fur-lined boots). Men wear their hair in ponytails and are usually clean shaved, while women plait their hair in varying styles that may also incorporate decorative beads.

All adult male tribe members are accomplished warriors (or at least are supposed to be). Common weapons include bone clubs, spears, machete with whale teeth on the dull side of the blade, and bladed metal boomerangs. Watertribe warriors often wear ceremonial black and white war paint into battle, and waterbending warriors wear mouthpieces and hoods.

.rulers/royalty/goverment/etc.

The Northern Tribe relies mostly on a monarch-like leadership system. This leader is always male. The system is different from that of the Fire Nation, however, for the tribe leader can pick any male he likes to follow his footsteps, not just his own son or someone blood-related to him.

.military status.

The Northern tribe is not nearly as 'slack' in the army department as the tribe in the south. They train their men very strictly to be fighters. Those who fall to live up to the expectations are taunted and badgered, often viciously. The women, too, are trained as healers. A very rare few as benders (see above). When times of battle arise, any hard-feelings within the tribe are instantly forgotten, and they work together to protect and defend their home.

.important figures.

'Avatar' Kahamo: The Avatar herself was a born member of the Northern tribe. Because of it's gender-biased, upon finding the Avatar was a female, much of the tribe was sent into an uproar; some joyfully, others angrily. Despite the chaos, Kahamo managed to begin her life as the Avatar with as much success as those before her, and even the males from her homeland who once stuck their noses up have come to approve of her. ...Mostly. However, Kahamo, interestingly enough, learned waterbending after learning the other three elements.

'Master' Makoda: A master bender and ruler, king, lord or whatever you want to call him of the tribe. Although, foreigners probably wouldn't know it, since he spends most of his time doing 'commoner' things like fishing. Makoda is a very edgy, spiteful man. Although he is a master at bending, he has yet to be a teacher as he has never taken on a student. He seems to dislike children, really. And women. And a lot of men, too. He is the older brother of the Avatar and twin brother of Sasha. He habors bitter feelings for the both of them. Kahamo for 'abandoning' he and Sasha, and Sasha for supporting her decision to do so time and again.

'Master' Sasha: Prior to discovering her younger sister was the Avatar, Sasha had no interest in bending. Or fighting. Or much of anything really. The sexist ways of her homeland irked her, but not enough to do anything about it. When Kahamo was proclaimed the Avatar and Makoda refused to teach her waterbending, then accused Sasha of being too 'weak' and 'girly' to teach her, Sasha cut off all her hair and left for the Southern tribe where she learned waterbending while Kahamo mastered the other three elements. She succeeded with extremely impressive speed, and just in time to teach her sister. Because of her late start, however, Sasha is potentially the weakest and 'least controlled' of all the master benders. She has since moved to live in the Southern tribe.

.important locations.

Northen Water Tribe: The Northern Water Tribe live in a large city characterized by a huge outer wall of solid ice which waterbenders manipulate to let people in and out. The city has an elaborate canal system which people use gondolas to travel, alongside and pathway and bridge system. Housing units are generally more modern in nature, square in shape with terraces and different stories.

Makoda Bridge: While he himself did not build it entirely, Makoda is to thank for most of the bridge system and it's construction, thus it was named after him.

.waterbending.

As one might expect from the name, Waterbending is the art of bending or controlling water through a combination of one's will and stance. Like all bending arts, Waterbending is closely associated with a form of martial arts, in this case Tai Chi. The Waterbending style is based off very fluid motions, and is well known for it's offensive and healing abilities. Waterbenders can use a number of techniques that include controlling the movement and form of water in all it's states (liquid, solid, etc.,). Certain Waterbenders can even control the water found in lifeforms such as plants. Healing is also a large part of Waterbending, however many men do not study that particular aspect of the art, just as many women do not study the offense side of Waterbending.

Typically, Waterbenders are much like their element: serene and fluid, though dangerous when angry. Usually, they adept at changing to fit different sitations and are good problem solvers.
