As seen in blue on the map, the Southern Water Tribe which inhabits the south pole.

The Southern Water Tribe is settled in a number of small villages, rather than a walled city like their Northern counterparts. While the two tribes share some cultural traditions, they also have ceremonies unique to their areas. The Southern Water Tribe practices a rite-of-passage called 'Ice Dodging.' When a male tribe member turns fourteen he and his father go out on a boat and he is challenged to navigate iceberg-studded waters. If and when the boy succeeds, he receives a mark on the forehead and is considered a full member of the tribe.

Members of the water tribe, Northern and Southern, typically have light to dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a tan skin tone. Water Tribe clothing usually consists of a set of blue anorak (or poncho) and trousers, both of which are lined with white fur against the cold of the climate and are worn with mittens and mukluks (or fur-lined boots). Men wear their hair in ponytails and are usually clean shaved, while women plait their hair in varying styles that may also incorporate decorative beads.

All adult male tribe members are accomplished warriors (or at least are suppose to be). Common weapons include bone clubs, spears, machete with whale teeth on the dull side of the blade, and bladed metal boomerangs. Watertribe warriors often wear ceremonial black and white war paint into battle, and waterbending warriors wear mouthpieces and hoods.

.rulers/royalty/goverment/etc.

The Southern Water Tribe is led by a council consisting of four elders; two males and two females. They are siblings and go by the nickname 'Ro-Ko-Ki-La', the first two intials of their names put together.

.military status.

While there is no real estbalished military for the Southern tribe persay, males are all trained as warriors starting from a very young age. Women, too, can take part in this training and will often battle just as often as their male counterparts. In addition, the entire tribe will fight to protect it. So, in a way, the entire tribe itself is it's own army.

.important figures.

'Elder' Ropoka ("Ro"): The eldest of the four siblings to govern the tribe and one of two males. They say with age comes wisdom, and in this case it's very much true. If a poll were to be taken, Ro would most likely come out on top if the question was about who the wisest of them was. Unfortunately, while intelligent, he's also extremely grumpy and tends to do little more than bum around and complain about small children.

'Elder' Konana ("Ko"): The second eldest of the four siblings and one of two females. There is a long-running joke between members of the tribe that she's more suited to be an airbender. She is very... dense, and seems to place no strain on anything, thus worrying about nothing, which isn't nesscarily a good standpoint for someone running the show. Her siblings often badger her about her care free ways and although she is the oldest save for Ro she gets hardly any say.

'Elder' Kiora ("Ki"): The third eldest of the four siblings and the final male. Kiora, like his brother, is grumpy. Unlike Ro, he isn't grumpy at everyone, but his brother himself. Ki is convinced he would be better in the position his brother has. He's the first to complain about any decisions made or disagree even after a matter is settled. This attitude has left him with the nickname 'The Refuser', but he probably doesn't know about it.

'Elder' Lako ("La"): The youngest of the four siblings and the final female. Lako is a no non-sense woman. She's the first to bash heads together--quite literally--when squabbles with her siblings arise. She has been accused of being too fair minded, and in the opinion of many this is definiately the case.

'Master' Sasha: Originally from the Northern tribe, Sasha is a master bender. She's more prone to taking on girl students due to her experiences in her home tribe, but will take boys as well, just far more hesitantly. Out of all the 'masters', especially those who taught the Avatar (who happens to be her sister), Sasha is probably the weakest and most likely to 'lose her cool', which is almost entirely if not entirely to blame on her bending starting later in life (see Northern tribe for more info). Taking that into consideration, her accomplishments may be more impressive than the other teachers.

.important locations.

Southern Water Tribe: The settlements of the Southern Water Tribe are typically all near the coast. They are almost all characterized by a circular snow outer wall with ungated entrances. People live in large, igloo-like housing units.

The Mountain: This nameless mountain is covered in snow and used dominantly for penguin sled by children (and sometimes adults).

The Port: The port, also nameless, is where the small but effective boats of the tribe are stored.

.waterbending.

As one might expect from the name, Waterbending is the art of bending or controlling water through a combination of one's will and stance. Like all bending arts, Waterbending is closely associated with a form of martial arts, in this case Tai Chi. The Waterbending style is based off very fluid motions, and is well known for it's offensive and healing abilities. Waterbenders can use a number of techniques that include controlling the movement and form of water in all it's states (liquid, solid, etc.,). Certain Waterbenders can even control the water found in lifeforms such as plants. Healing is also a large part of Waterbending, however many men do not study that particular aspect of the art, just as many women do not study the offense side of Waterbending.

Typically, Waterbenders are much like their element: serene and fluid, though dangerous when angry. Usually, they adept at changing to fit different sitations and are good problem solvers.
