Ahh, nighttime, his favorite time of day. The wolf was never sure why it had always been, but no matter the reason, it just was. He trotted along in silence, lacking any companions, and the time alone really helped to shut the wolf up. Before, while in captivity, he was just another chatterbox who got punished for never keeping his mouth shut at the right times. It was open when it should have been closed, and closed when it should have been open. Now, since escaping, he'd learned the right and wrong times to talk...most often the hard way. Of course, talking while walking alone made you look crazy, so he was quiet almost all the time now.

Kiume stopped just a few inches away from the edges of a waterhole. He'd been travelling for a long while, and the heat had exhausted him almost to collapsing. However, Kiume was stronger than that. Surely he could last a little over a day in the heat. After a moment's rest, he lowered his head to take a drink, eyes closed and ears up and alert.

Should the gray twilight wanderer have looked up he would have seen the large shadow that flitted through the darkness on silent white paws. However he was busy drinking, so the other took the opportunity to stalk closer as carefully as possibly.

Deep copper/red shoulders rolled as the large maned wolf stalked forward, the leather collar-strap around his neck rubbed at his fur incessantly, a reminder of why captivity was such a horrendous thing. Akamichi had never managed to get the collar from his broad, muscled neck.

It was lucky for him that his little 'daughter' Isis was asleep back in the den not that far off, for if she'd been here Akamichi would have been banging his triangle marked forehead against the nearest boulder rather than stalking towards the male that had so easily invaded his territory.

A mere foot or two from the other now, Akamichi rolled his shoulders foreward, ready to pounce if the male made the wrong move, and used his thick tail to upturn a rock he'd seen behind him with a loud clacking noise and a heavy thunk.

The brown and blue eyes of the large male maned wolf took in the other before him with such intensity they could have burned, however it wasn't anger or evil, it was questioning.

(Sorry for the late post. I was trying to organize my journal, as well as retrieve an old photobucket account. Alas, both attempts ended in failure. XD)

Kiume's ears twitched at the sound, and his head jerked upward immediately. Had he not been drinking, he wouldn't been able to smell the foreign scent of another, maned wolf or otherwise. The male slowly moved his tail aside, turning his head slightly to the side to see who was behind him. Luckily for him, the moonlight was bright enough for him to be able to see clearer than usual at night.

His assailant was a male mane wolf, copper-red and white in color, with a collar around his neck. Kiume cocked a brow in curiosity. He would've made a swift movement to sit down, however he was at the mercy of this stranger, so he chose instead to speak.

"Hello," he greeted, trying to sound as friendly and harmless as possible. "Lovely evening isn't it?"

Lifting an eyebrow slowly, Akamichi let his shoulders lose the tense look that seemed to be centered around them and he stood in one smooth motion, his bi-tonal eyes flashing in amusement at the other's gall. This was the first Maned Wolf to walk onto his land and attempt to strike up a conversation with him as if he weren't invading.

Maybe he hadn't meant to.

That made more sense to him than the male being an utter moron, for how would he have lived this long if he were enough of an idiot to tred wittlessly onto the lands of others?

"I suppose it is." Akamichi allowed, standing slowly so he could peer over at the other more relaxed. It was the others amiable personality that enabled him to relax so much he supposed. No other had actually managed to win Akamichi's trust within the borders of his own lands.

The silver wolf followed, taking a moment to slowly turn around to see the other wolf's face clearly. It was odd, he had to admit, to see another maned wolf after such a long time out of captivity. The physical structure was one he hadn't seen in such a long while. Kiume found that among the lands he'd escaped onto, maned wolves weren't the dominant breed. The male offered a slight smile before taking a seat.

"Suppose?" he asked. "I couldn't ask for clearer skies." He chuckled lightly, then lifted his still aching paw. Though he'd been offered herbs not too long ago, they didn't seem to help. Instead, they'd made the spot where he'd put them itch...very badly. Kiume twitched his ears, and looked completely helpless in front of the other. Once he stopped licking his paw, he looked back at him.

"I'm sorry, I lost my manners for a second. I'm Kiume." Despite his usual sense, Kiume didn't realize that he'd happened upon another's land, but kept to his usual, polite self. It was a precaution that he took while still being scrutinized by the other party. It never hurt to play safe, after all.

Tilting his dual eyes up to the star filled night, Akamichi watched as they twinkled before his eyes for a long moment before lowering his pericing gaze once more to Kiume. He seemed not to understand his blunder, so this the large red maned wolf could forgive, as he'd done his fair share of blundering when he was a youth over six years in the past.

"I'm Akamichi, might I ask what brings you into my territory cousin?" his words weren't sharp or angry, they were filled with understanding and pure forms of curiosity at their finest. He'd yet to meet a wolf that hadn't the sense of smell enough to realize when they traipsed accidentally onto the grounds of another.

This one might have had an excuse however, for when Aka lowered his gaze he let it settle on the gray wolf's injured paw. Paw injuries weren't only irritating, they were often troublesome and dangerous. If that persisted long enough in the gray wolf's state then he might even lose the paw.

"One more question if I may, your paw seems wounded and swelled... and yet you're walking on it all the same as if it weren't?" Akamichi didn't understand this logic, of course it was two different beings peering at one another, so doubtless they'd be different. But all the same, he imagined sense when there might not be any. "Do you need some help finding something to take the swelling down? One of the advantages of living near a watering hole is the plants."

The question reached his ears and he thought for a moment. "Just passing through, I hope I didn't disturb you from your sleep or anything," he replied.

His eyes widened for a split second after the following question before reverting to their normal size. So he did own this territory, and a bit of relief washed over the wolf. Strange as it was, it was comforting to know that it didn't belong to a much bigger opponent, like one of those lions from the desert. Kiume smiled slightly and looked down at his injury. The male hated to admit it, but he was almost defenseless with something like that on his paw of all things. "Yeah," he said. "I'd appreciate the help, but I'm...not too happy with using herbs. A lioness I'd run into gave me some, but I might've been...allergic or something. They ended up making it worse."

He flattened his ears and lifted his paw to tend to it a little more before putting it back down. "Do you have...maybe, another way of getting rid of the swelling and itching?"

Sleep, such a word was almost unknown to the red and white ghost that haunted the borderlines of the pridelands so tirelessly. He slept during the day on occaisons, when he wasn't traveling behind Akiiki in attempts to watch him and make sure that the large white and violet lion didn't slip into the grasp of the one who caused his possession. His teeth were the reasons behind many a scar on that lion.

"No... sleep is a fleeting thing not often disturbed by visitors. Don't worry." Akamichi alluded, his eyes shimmering in the moonlight. "I'd ask what lioness you went to, however what works on lions doesn't always work on us. Come with me, I'll show you what'll take down the swelling, might take the itching away as well."

His paws twisted on the spot and he flicked his red and white tail to have the other follow. Aka knew of one place where what the other asked for might be possible, but it was far on the other side of the watering hole and a very small place that wasy easy to miss. Only thanks to his nose did Akamichi even know where it resided, he'd used it once when Akiiki's muzzle had swelled beyond what it should.

Kiume nodded in thanks and followed after his brethren, limping ever so slightly whenever he had to use his swelled paw. He flinched every now and then when the paw throbbed, but forced a smile to his face to try and ignore the itching and the pain. "So," he said as they walked, attempting to make light conversation. "Uhh...how long have you lived here?" the wolf asked. He couldn't think of what else to ask him, after all, and it was the easiest thing he could manage to pull out of his head.

While waiting for an answer, Kiume's eyes wandered to the surface of the water. It reminded him of, for some reason, the pair of eyes from his own past. To whom the eyes belonged to he couldn't remember, but they were vivid in his memory. It distracted him, and he didn't notice his pace quicken. Aka's tail whacking him in the face brought him back to reality, and he sneezed.
