He didn't know how long he'd been here, in this dark hell hole of a cave. He couldn't ever remember when he'd met Deimos . . . a few days ago? Weeks? Jahka assumed it was weeks, because Moirai's belly was growing. Though still lean and deadly, she had the look of a mother-to-be, but the temper of a starved grizzly.

His eye had also healed. He would never see out of it again, but at least it no longer dripped blood and smelled of sickness.

He could escape. Moirai had given him so many chances . . . but one thing kept him from running; the thing that had pushed him from the comfort of Deimos' side and his offer.

His pups.

Leaving them alone with Moirai was out of the question, and maybe . . . maybe he could take them with him when they were old enough. But he would try to get them away from their mother as soon as he could, before she could taint their innocence and steal it away. She had said she wanted her own personal army, one that she could train from the beginning.

Snarling silently, he vowed that he would never give her the chance.

The voices were back, and they plagued Moirai incessantly. She couldn't sleep because of them, couldn't hunt. And she wouldn't allow Jahka outside of the cave; she couldn't go after him any more if he decided to grow a pair and leave for good.

Being hungry didn't help anything.

Why do you keep the tool around? You've already ruined him. Let him go.

Yes, mutt. You're enthusiasm has made him little better than worthless. Just kill him already, and put him out of his misery.

Out of his misery? Let him suffer. And he's still usable. He's starting to grow a backbone. All you have to do is find the right switch, and he'll be the perfect killer. But the things growing inside you have made you weak.

No, she was weak before the spawn started to grow, in thinking that she needed them to do her bidding in the first place. You don't need them, Moirai. Deimos is an easy kill . . . stop being weak and finish him!

If she kills the pups now, she'll kill herself. They're too much a part of her. But when they're born, all you have to do is what your mother did, Moirai. Be like Bia and just walk away . . . walk away, and never look back.

The reminder of her abandonment ripped a snarl from the spotted femme's jaws. Desperately, she pressed her head against the rocky floor, clawing at her ears with her front paws to try and block out the voices.

Hearing the snarl, Jahka lifted his head, ears pricked forward as he listened intently. What was going on?

Curious, he rose slowly to his paws, padding slowly from his corner and into the main part of the cave, where a hole in the ceiling let in a shaft of silvery moonlight, illuminating the scene before him.

Jahka knew that Moirai was all kinds of crazy, but she looked as if she was trying to claw her ears off. Blood already dripped from the deep ridges she had gouged out of the side of her head in her efforts.

He didn't know where it came from, but suddenly he was yelling, his paws dragging him towards the female. "Moirai, stop!"

The femme's eyes lifted, their blue depths swimming with madness caused by the voices fighting within her skull. A soft whine escaped her maw, and for an instant, he saw the wolf she would have been, had the madness not taken hold of her in her youth. He saw a beautiful spirit, a strong will, and a kindness that rivaled any he'd ever seen.

"Jahka . . . make them stop . . . Please!" her voice cracked as she pleaded with him, her eyes swimming now with tears. Jahka knew that this wasn't the wolf that had tormented him the past weeks. And for an instant, he wanted to help her. Wanted to do anything he could to make whatever was doing this to her disappear.

But as quick as it came, the look in her eyes was gone. The wounded tone in her voice was replaced with the stinging bite that had snapped at him for weeks. "What are you doing? Get away from me!" She snarled and lunged at him, snapping her teeth near his throat.

Jahka jumped back to a safe distance, his head low to the ground as he watched her pace, shaking her head like a bear after getting caught by the honey bees.

He had seen that wounded part of her, and even though he hated her with everything inside of him, he would never forget what he saw.

Sighing softly, he slowly backed away into the shadows; turning his back on her was something he just didn't do anymore. The scars on the backs of his hind legs were lesson enough.

Ignoring his rumbling stomach, he curled himself back in his corner and watched her shadow cut through the beam of moonlight. One thing he had to give her credit for . . .

He was no longer afraid of small spaces. Now, they were his only refuge.

You weakling dog! Begging with the tool to save you? Are you that pathetic?

No wonder Bia left you. You are a disgrace to your blood!

More reason to kill Deimos. If he's as pathetic as you, better to spare the world of his presence as soon as possible. Than, you can rid the world of your own worthless carcass.

Pathetic.

Weak!

Useless . . .

Letting out an anguished howl, Moirai bolted. The three voices screamed at once, telling her not to leave the tool alone, but she couldn't take it anymore. She had to get away from them. And the only way she knew how . . .

Was water.

Jahka heard the scrabbling of claws on stone, a howl that sent shivers down his spine, and then suddenly, he knew she was gone. Unable to fathom why, he followed her, running as fast as his beaten body could.
